400 Series 16 Issue 1


Nuts for Rocker Shaft May 2014

This Service Letter is a Product Support Program (PSP) for inspecting nuts for the rocker shaft on certain three
and four cylinder engines, models GJ, GK, GN, GP, GU, and GV for the affected product that is listed in table 1.

Notes:
This program must be administered either before or after the problem has occurred.
The campaign number is 14/049.
The termination date for the campaign is the 9th May 2016.
The information supplied in this Service Letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program.
Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your
Perkins product support representative.

Problem
There have been a number of isolated instances with issues with the nuts that secure the rocker shaft in the
correct position. The issue may cause high exhaust temperatures, low power, the engine may become difficult
to start and may emit black smoke.

Repair Time Schedule


The total labour allowance will be a maximum of one and a half hours.

Solution
Inspect the nuts in order to determine if the nuts are secure. Inspect the rocker shaft and associated
components for wear or for damage.
If there is no wear or damage, ensure that the nuts that secure the rocker shaft are tightened to the correct
torque. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly (KENR6226), ‘Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Install’ for the correct
torque value.

Check the engine valve lash. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting (KENR6225), ‘Engine Valve
Lash - Inspect/Adjust’ for the correct procedure.
