The province of Son La has invested
in the building of Son La Bridge,
which uses advanced technology in
the form of the VSL tension member
system. The bridge is part of a
national programme of stayed
bridges to develop transportation in
rural areas.
A clear advantage has been the
proximity of VSL’s supply centre in
Singapore, with its large stock of
stressbars and a wide range of
corresponding accessories.
Scope of works performed
• Fatigue test for the CT Stressbar
- full system testing with 45%
GUTS and 500,000 cycles
• Supply of CT Stressbar and
accessories
• Supply of shop drawings, method
statement and technical
assistance during installation
Son La Bridge is a steel-concrete
composite structure with two H-
shaped steel pylons, a steel deck and
a concrete deck slab. The whole
bridge is 66m long and 7.5m wide,
with a 36m-long centre span. Each
pylon is 10.5m high.
The design load is H13 to meet the
22TCN 221-95 design code.
VSL’s CT Stressbar system is used
for the 24 stays that support the
bridge. VSL Vietnam supplied 63 CT
Stressbars with diameters of 73mm,
56mm and 40mm, in lengths that
varied from 5.059m to 8.766m.

as main and back stays enabled
the designers to create an
