MOVIE REVIEW TERMS

1. Blurbs –

I think I’ve grown up unknowingly quoting The Lord of the

Rings despite having actually never read it until last month. It is my dad’s all
time favourite book (or series of books); he re-reads it about once a year
(including all the appendices), and knows more than anyone I’ve met about all
the elaborate history of each and every fictional character, their family, race
and way of life. He can cite passages on request and when he and his brothers
get together, they muse about the answers to niche questions raised in the back
annals of The Silmarillion. Once the films came out, I finally understood the
context of his exclamations of ‘You shall not pass!’ towards the
Ford Fiesta trying to overtake us on the school run, or ‘Fool of a Took!’ when
I dropped my ice cream at the beach. On finally reading the books, however,
I’ve found a whole host of more explanations regarding some peculiar turns of
phrases I thought were just down to the eccentricities of my father and his side
of the family. Turns out, no – Mr Tolkien is responsible for a huge amount of
our favourite family sayings. Therefore, this post is dedicated to my dad, who
is probably horrified that it’s taken me 26 years to read his all time favourite
book, but delighted that I might at last be able to quote back at him.

2. Critic –

Against all odds in an era of machine-made spectaculars, Mr. Jackson

and his collaborators have created a film epic that lives and breathes. Though
faithful in every detail to Tolkien, it has a vigorous life of its own grandeur,
moral heft and emotional depth.
3. Mediocre –

A epic adventure masterpiece. I had to watch several times to

understand some of the dialogue but when I do understand, it is wonderful
well done. I have never read the books but when I was in a bookstore, soon
after viewing the movie at the cinemas, I bought the novel.

4. Cliché –

The Lord of The Rings has a lot part. For the battle between the Last
Alliance and Sauron's forces that begins the film, an elaborate CGI animation
system, called MASSIVE, was developed by Stephen Regelous; it allowed
thousands of individual animated characters, or "agents" in the program to act
independently. This helped give the illusion of realism to the battle sequences.
The "Making of" Lord of the Rings DVD reports some interesting initial
problems: in the first execution of a battle between groups of characters, the
wrong groups attacked each other. In another early demo, some of the warriors
at the edge of the field could be seen running away. They were initially
moving in the wrong direction, and had been programmed to keep running
until they encountered an enemy.

5. Character Driven –

Before filming began on 11 October 1999, the principal actors trained

for six weeks in sword fighting (with Bob Anderson), riding and boating.
Jackson hoped such activities would allow the cast to bond so chemistry
would be evident on screen as well as getting them used to life in Wellington.
They were also trained to pronounce Tolkien's verses properly. After the
shoot, the nine cast members playing the Fellowship got a tattoo of the
English word "nine" written in Tengwar, with the exception of John Rhys-
Davies, whose stunt double got the tattoo instead. The film is noted for having
an ensemble cast, and some of the cast and their respective characters include:
Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins: a young hobbit who inherits the One
Ring from his uncle Bilbo. Wood was the first actor to be cast on 7 July
1999. Wood was a fan of the book, and he sent in an audition dressed as Frodo,
reading lines from the novel. Wood was selected from 150 actors who
auditioned, including Jake Gyllenhaal.

6. High-Concept –

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a

2001 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the first
volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film is the first
instalment in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and was produced by Barrie M.
Osborne, Jackson, Fran Walsh and Tim Sanders, and written by
Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Jackson. The film features an ensemble
cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean
Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic
Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Ian
Holm, and Andy Serkis. It was followed by The Two Towers (2002) and The
Return of the King (2003).

7. Plot –

In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the lords of Elves, Dwarves, and Men are
given Rings of Power. Unbeknownst to them, the Dark Lord Sauron forges
the One Ring in Mount Doom, infusing into it a great part of his power to
dominate, through it and at a distance, the other Rings, so he might conquer
Middle-earth. A final alliance of men and elves battles Sauron's forces
in Mordor, where Prince Isildur of Gondor severs Sauron's finger, and the
Ring with it, thereby destroying his physical form. With Sauron's first defeat,
the Third Age of Middle-earth begins. Unfortunately, the Ring's influence
corrupts Isildur, and, rather than destroy the Ring, Isildur takes it for himself.
Isildur is later killed by Orcs, and the Ring is lost for 2,500 years, until it is
found by Gollum, who owns it for five centuries. The Ring is then found by
a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who turns invisible when he puts it on, but is
unaware of its history.
Sixty years later, Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday in the Shire, reuniting
with his old friend, Gandalf the Grey. Bilbo reveals that he intends to leave the
Shire for one last adventure, and he leaves his inheritance, including the Ring,
to his nephew, Frodo. Although Bilbo has begun to become corrupted by the
Ring and tries to keep it for himself, Gandalf intervenes. Gandalf, suspicious
of the Ring, tells Frodo to keep it secret and to keep it safe. Gandalf then
investigates the Ring, discovers its true nature, and returns to warn Frodo.
Gandalf also learns that Gollum was tortured by Orcs, and that Gollum uttered
two words during his torture: "Shire" and "Baggins." Gandalf instructs Frodo
to leave the Shire, accompanied by his friend Samwise Gamgee. Gandalf rides
to Isengard to meet with fellow wizard Saruman the White, but learns that he
has joined forces with Sauron, who has dispatched his nine
undead Nazgûl servants to find Frodo. After a brief battle, Saruman imprisons
Gandalf. Frodo and Sam are joined by fellow hobbits Merry and Pippin, and
they evade the Nazgûl, arriving in Bree, where they are meant to meet
Gandalf. However, Gandalf never arrives, and they are instead aided by a
ranger named Strider, a friend of Gandalf's, who promises to escort them
to Rivendell. The hobbits are ambushed by the Nazgûl on Weathertop, and
their leader, the Witch-King, stabs Frodo with a cursed Morgul blade. Arwen,
an elf and Strider's betrothed, comes to Frodo's aid, rescuing him and
incapacitating the Nazgûl. She takes him to Rivendell, where he is healed.
Frodo meets Gandalf, who escaped Isengard with help from Gwaihir, a giant
eagle. Arwen's father, Lord Elrond, holds a council that decides the Ring must
be destroyed in Mount Doom. While the members argue, Frodo volunteers to
take the Ring, accompanied by Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pippin, elf Legolas,
dwarf Gimli, Boromir of Gondor, and Strider, who is revealed to be Aragorn,
Isildur's heir and the rightful King of Gondor. Bilbo gives Frodo his sword,
Sting. The Fellowship of the Ring sets off, but Saruman's magic forces them
to travel through the Mines of Moria, much to Gandalf's displeasure.
The Fellowship discovers that the dwarves within Moria have been slain, and
they are attacked by Orcs and a cave troll. They defeat them, but are
confronted by Durin's Bane, a Balrog residing within the mines. Gandalf casts
the Balrog into a vast chasm, but it drags Gandalf down into the darkness with
it. The rest of the Fellowship, now led by Aragorn, reaches Lothlórien, home
to elves Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel privately informs Frodo that only
he can complete the quest, and that one of his friends will try to take the Ring.
Meanwhile, Saruman creates an army of Uruk-hai to track down and kill the
Fellowship.
The Fellowship leaves Lothlórien by river to Parth Galen. Frodo wanders off
and is confronted by Boromir, who tries to take the Ring in desperation.
Afraid of the Ring corrupting his friends, Frodo decides to travel to Mordor
alone. The Fellowship is then ambushed by the Uruk-hai. Merry and Pippin
are taken captive, and Boromir is mortally wounded by the Uruk chieftain,
Lurtz. Aragorn arrives and slays Lurtz, and watches Boromir die peacefully.
Sam follows Frodo, accompanying him to keep his promise to Gandalf to
protect Frodo, while Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli go to rescue Merry and
Pippin.

8. Hype –
The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book in The Lord of the Rings
trilogy. This story is set in the world of Tolkien's invention, known as Middle
Earth. A specter of evil is looming over Middle Earth as the Dark
Lord, Sauron, seeks to consolidate his already immense power, by reclaiming
the One Ring that he has lost. Most of his power is held in this ring. With this
power, he can enslave Middle Earth and unleash an incredible evil with little
opposition. In the story of The Hobbit, a hobbit called Bilbo Baggins has
stolen the ring from a hideous creature called Gollum. Somehow, this ring
ends up with Frodo Baggins, Bilbo's nephew and all of a sudden, Frodo is at
the center of this epic drama involving the ring that he knows very little about.

9. Out of Context –

Gandal meets his end on the Bridge of Khazad-dum, attempting to

defend the company from the evil Balrog. The group must continue without
him, heading south, into Lorien, a forest of elves. Here, the
Lady Galadriel offers comfort and security for a time. Frodo grows in
knowledge and maturity and he becomes more resolved to fulfill his mission.
His resolve is further tested when Boromir tries to steal the ring from him. In
the end, Frodo knows that he must fulfill his duty but he does not want to
endanger his friends any further, nor does he want to solicit their opinions for
he knows that they will change his mind. In the end, Frodo continues alone
though Sam soon finds him and refuses to do anything other than accompany
him, heading towards the evil land of Mordor.

10. Puns –
The wizard, Gandalf, warns Frodo that he should leave the shire and
keep the ring out of Sauron's hands. They meet a fellow named Tom Bombadil
who helps them get out of trouble when they are faced with the Nine Black
Riders. Later, they meet Strider/Aragorn and they continue safely to the
country of the elves. Frodo recuperates from a wound and he is healed by
Elrond. At the Council of Elrond it is decided that the ring must be destroyed
at the Cracks of Doom. This is many miles away, deep inside the evil lands of
Mordor. The Fellowship of the ring is established, including nine individuals
in all.

MOVIE REVIEW EXAMPLE

TITLE: “The Lord Of The Rings” The fellowship of the rings

The Lord of the Rings is a fairy-tale of myth and fantasy. Peter Jackson
directed a film that was considered, for a very long time, impossible to make,
and not only for technical reasons. The narrative roots long and detailed. and
the storyline is deeply connected with the creation of a fantastic continent
from a time unknown called Middle Earth' Its author, Tolkien, dedieated a
considerable part of his life developing this continent's background, its
mythology and origins, its different kinds of people, cultures and languages,
and therefore its geographic references are determinant to the unfolding of the
story of the One Ring.
An ancient Ring thought lost for centuries has been found, and through a
strange twist in fate has been given to a small Hobbit named Frodo. When
Gandalf discoers the Ring is in fact the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron,
Frodo must make an epic quest to the Cracks Doom in order to destroy it!
However he does joined by Gandalf, Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf,
Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise.
Through mountains, snow, darkness, forests, rivers and plains, facing evil and
danger at every curner the Fellowship of the Ring must go. Their quest to
destroy the One Ring is the only end of the Dark Lords reign.
Saruman has allied himself with Sauron and has betrayed Gandalf.
Gandalf was held captive so Frodo arrived in the village with 3 other Hobbits,
Sam, Merry, and Pip. then they meet with Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) a
warrior who claims to be a friend of Gandalf, Aragorn tells them that they
must leave for Elrond (Hugo Weaving), an Elf King to plan action. Their
journey was not relaxed because the Nazgül (corrupt human king) Sauron's
loyal followers had been wary of the existence of the Ring after Bilbo had
worn the ring. But they finally arrived at Elrond's place and met Gandalf who
had escaped from Saruman's captivity. There the heroes had gathered, envoys
from the Dwarves, Men, and Elves united to destroy the Sauron Ring. The
ring can only be broken at the place of the maker; on Mt Doom inside Mordor.
The insane act of entering Mordor caused a split in the Allies between all
races. No one was able to carry the ring because of his darkness. Until finally
Frodo offered himself to go to Mordor and destroy the Ring. Courage This
little creature brought the heroes together again and joined him to escort
Mordor.
The most interesting part of the film according to us is when the final part
of the fellowship of the rings is when the ring bearers are ambushed by a
group of orcs in the forest. That's the most tense part and makes it even more
interesting.
The less interesting part in our opinion is when the son of Isildur took the
sword of his father and succeeded in decapitating Sauron's hand. Sauron who
loses the ring loses his strength, but his soul is still left in the ring. In that part,
which in our opinion is not understandable to what the author tells
The greatest thing about this film, brought back to a time when I was love
with a different world where everything was possible. Reading The Lord of
the Rings night after night, I came to understand what this thing of mankind
really was all about. The corruption of absolute power, the importance and
value of friendship, the inevitability of growing up, the strength of hope. That
this film could capture that magic, and I to its message of humanism, is a
statement to its greatness. Gandalfs words, that even the a new hearer smallest
person may change the course of the world, and have a part to play in the
destiny of all. are immortal.
This film is G, a rating that may outperform teenagers and action lovers,
but it is truly a film for everyone. This film makes teens more interested in
action-themed fiction. The actions displayed are enough to make our souls
vibrate. This film is highly recommended to watch if you like fiction films
with grooves that make you curious.
