UNIT I
1. (a). Explain the principle of operation of 3-phase induction motor and explain 7M
how the rotating magnetic field is produced by three-phase currents.

(b). A 50 HP, 6–Pole, 50 Hz, slip ring IM runs at 960 rpm on full load with a rotor 7M
current of 40A. Allow 300 W for copper loss in S.C. and 1200 W for
mechanical losses, find R2 per phase of the 3- phase rotor.

2. (a). Write a brief note i) induction generator ii) double cage rotor induction 7M
motors.
(b). The power input to the rotor of a 3 phase, 50 HZ, 6 pole induction motor is 80 7M
KW. The rotor emf makes 100 complete alternations per minute. Find
i. Slip
ii. Motor Speed
iii. Mechanical power developed
iv. Rotor copper loss per phase
v. Rotor resistance per phase if rotor current is 65 A
vi. Torque developed.
UNIT II
3. (a). Explain with neat diagram the construction and Working of single phase 7M
Induction Motor.
(b). Give the classification of single phase motors .Explain any two types of single 7M
phase induction motors.

4. (a). Explain double revolving field theory. 7M
(b). Develop equivalent circuit of a single phase induction motor ignoring core 7M
losses.
UNIT III
5. (a). Derive the emf equation of an alternator. 7M
(b). A 3 phase, star connected synchronous generator driven at 750rpm is required 7M
to generate a line to line voltage of 440V at 50HZ on open circuit. The stator
is wound with 2slots per pole per phase and each coil has 4 turns. Calculate
the useful flux per pole.

6. (a). Explain pitch factor and distribution factor. 7M
(b). A 3 phase, 6 pole, star-connected alternator revolves at 1000 r.p.m. The stator 7M
has 90 slots and 8 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.05 wb

(sinusoidally distributed). Calculate the voltage generated by the machine if
the winding factor is 0.96.
UNIT IV
7. (a). Discuss the parallel operation of two alternators with identical speed/load 7M
Characteristics.
(b). A 3300V, 3phase star connected alternator has a full load current of 100A. On 7M
short circuit a field current of 5A was necessary to produce full load current.
The emf on open circuit for the same excitation was 900V. The armature
resistance was 0.8Ω/ph. Determine the full load voltage regulation for
(1)0.8pf lagging (2)0.8pf leading.

8. (a). Describe construction and working of an alternator. 7M
(b). Two alternators working in parallel supply the following loads (i) lighting 7M
load of 500kW, (ii) 1000kW at 0.9pf, (iii) 500kW at 0.9pf lead, (iv) 800kW at
0.8 lag. One alternator is supplying 1500kW at 0.95pf lagging. Calculate the
load on the other machines.
UNIT V
9. (a). Derive the mechanical power developed per phase of a synchronous motor. 7M
(b). A 3300V, 3 phase synchronous motor running at 1500 rpm has its excitation 7M
kept constant corresponding to no-load terminal voltage of 3000V. Determine
the power input, power factor and torque developed for an armature current of
250A if the synchronous reactance is 5 Ω per phase and armature resistance is
neglected.
OR
10. (a). Draw and explain the phasor diagram of a synchronous motor operating at 7M
lagging and leading power factor.
(b). A 2000V, 3 phase, 4 pole, star connected synchronous motor runs at 7M
1500rpm. The excitation is constant and corresponding to an open circuit
voltage of 2000V. The resistance is negligible in comparison with
synchronous reactance of 3.5Ω /ph. For an armature current of 200A.
Determine (i) power factor (ii) power input (iii) torque developed.

load of 1.5 A/m from 200m to 450 m from A. The resistance of each conductor
is 0.05 ohm per Km .Find the point of minimum potential and its potential ?

factor. The capital cost per km of line including erection is Rs(9000+6000a)
where a is the X-section area of conductor in cm2 .The annual rate of interest
and depreciation is 10% and the energy costs 6 paise per kWh.The resistance
per km of each conductor is 0.176/a ?

power factor lagging by means of aover head transmission line of 15Km long.
The line resistance and inductance per kilometer are 0.02 Ohms and 0.85mH
respectively. The voltage at receiving end is 11kV . Find the voltage at sending
end and regulation ?

overshoot and steady state error for a unit-ramp input.
