ELC650: ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONAL INTERACTION

ASSESSMENT III: WRITTEN PRESENTATION – EMAIL (20%)


GUIDELINES

CLO: Explain verbally critical incidents concerning interpersonal communication issues in


the workplace and communicate ideas through clearly written email (A4)

General Information

Assessments II and III are linked as they are based on a similar stimulus. These two assessments
which evaluate students’ oral and written presentation are conducted consecutively in the
classroom.

GUIDELINES FOR LECTURERS

Following the discussion, each student in the group will be required to write an email to their
manager, summarising the key decisions based on the four aspects of the discussion in about 200
words (250 words for situation 4 with 5 aspects). They will be given half an hour immediately
after they have finished their discussion to write the email in class. The email should be
handwritten. Students should not be allowed to refer to any electronic gadgets when writing the
email. Students are to submit the notes taken during the discussion with the email.

SAMPLE EMAIL SITUATION

 Write an email of about 200 words to your manager, summarising the key
decisions based on the four aspects of your discussion.
 One mark will be deducted if your email exceeds 210 words.
 You are given thirty (30) minutes to write the email.
 Include a subject line in your email.
 Begin your email with ‘Dear …’

Submit the notes taken during the discussion with the email.

Situation
A group of you have been given the task of planning an event as part of your company’s
corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. Write an email of about 200 words to your
manager, summarising the key decisions based on the following aspects:
 the kind of event you would like to carry out and the objective
 the activities to be held as part of the event
 budget, funding and promotion of the event to the staff

Instructions for the Written Presentation (Email)

In the 200-word email, students should do the following:

 Include an opening line to introduce the subject of the discussion being summarised
 Write a clear summary of the key decisions based on the four aspects discussed
 Include a suitable concluding line
 Use correct grammar, appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures
 Use a polite tone

*NOTE TO LECTURER
The written component of this assessment evaluates students’ ability to take notes, summarise and
present content in a clearly worded email. The use of correct grammar, vocabulary, structures and
organisation will be taken into account when assessing the email. Deduct one mark if students
write more than 210 words.

SAMPLE EMAIL

Subject: CSR Event Proposal: One Ringgit One Hope Subject line

Dear Madam XXX, Salutation

I am writing this email to seek your approval for our company's CSR project. We plan to conduct a
