NOTE: Answer Five questions only.
‫ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬
Q1) Degree ( 20 )
Steam at 𝑇∞1 = 320 °C flows in a cast iron pipe (k =80W/m.℃) whose inner and outer diameters
are D1 =0.05 m and D2 =0.055 m, respectively. The pipe is covered with 0.03 m thick glass
wool insulation with k=0.05W/m.℃. Heat is lost to the surroundings at 𝑇∞2 =5 ℃by convection,
with a heat transfer coefficient of ℎ2 =18W/𝑚2 . ℃. Taking the heat transfer coefficient inside
the pipe to be ℎ1 =60W/𝑚2 . ℃, Taking L =1 m. Draw the thermal circuit for the wall and
determine the rate of heat loss from the steam.

Q2) Degree ( 20 )
A double-pipe counter flow heat exchanger is to cool ethylene glycol (Cp=2560J/kg.℃) flowing
at a rate of 3.5 kg/s from 80℃ to 40℃ by water (Cp=4180J/kg.℃) that enters at 20℃ and leaves
at 55℃. The overall heat transfer coefficient based on the inner surface area of the tube is
250W/𝑚2 .℃. Determine:
(a) The rate of heat transfer.
(b) The mass flow rate of water.
(c) The heat transfer surface area on the inner side of the tube.
Q3) Degree ( 20 )

A 0.007 kg/s Air at 200◦C is heated as it flows through a tube with a diameter of 0.025m at a
velocity of 10m/s. Calculate the rate of heat transfer if the wall temperature is 20◦C above the
air temperature, all along the length of the tube. How much would the bulk temperature increase
over a 3 m length of the tube? The properties of air are:
  1.493 kg/m 3 , k  0.0386 W/m. C,   2.57  10-5 kg/m. s , C p  1.025 kJ/kg. C , Pr  0.681

Q4) Degree ( 20 )
A) Electromagnetic waves strikes a hot body which has a reflectivity of 0.59 and a
transmissivity of 0.032 and the absorbed flux be 60 w/𝑚2 . Determine the rate of incident
flux.
B) A plane wall is constructed from an inner layer of 0.05 m thick steel (k = 40 W/m.K) and an
outer layer of 0.2 m brick (k = 2.5 W/m.K). The inner surface temperature is 900K and the
outside surface temperature is 460 K. Draw the thermal circuit for the wall and calculate the
rate of heat loss from a wall per unit area.

Q5) Answer two branch only Degree ( 20 )

A) Define: 1) Laminar flow 2) Viscosity 3) Heat exchanger
B) Cylindrical black body of 0.25m radius and 0.03m length, the cylinder surface
temperature is 1100°C. Calculate the rate of thermal energy emitted from the outside
surface.
C) A thin square plate 0.4m × 0.4m in a room at 30℃. One side of the plate is maintained at
a temperature of 70℃, while the other side is insulated (k=0.02808 W/m·°C). When
𝑁𝑢=5.9, determine the rate of heat transfer from the plate by natural convection if the
plate is horizontal (𝐿𝑐 = 𝐴𝑠 ⁄𝑝).

Q6) Degree ( 20 )
Water at 68 ℃ enters cross flow heat exchanger and it leaves at 44 ℃. The water is used to heat
an oil from 18 to 29℃. The total heat transfer rate is to be 30 kW. The overall heat transfer
coefficient is 420 W/𝑚2 ℃. Calculate the area of the heat exchanger by using the effectiveness–
NTU method. The NTU of this cross-flow heat exchanger can be determined from:
ln(1−εc)
NTU = − ln [1 + ]
