Q1/ Water is to be heated from 10°C to 80°C as it flows through a 0.02 m internal-
diameter, 7m long tube. The tube is equipped with an electric resistance heater,
which provides uniform heating throughout the surface of the tube. The outer
surface of the heater is well insulated. If the system is to provide hot water at a
mass rate of 0.132kg/s. Properties of water:
  990.1 kg/m 3 , k  0.637 W/m. C,    /   0.602  10-6 m 2 /s ,
C p  4180 J/kg. C , Pr  3.91

1- Determine the power rating of the resistance heater.

2- Estimate the inner surface temperature of the pipe. (25 mark)

Q2/ Steam at 𝑇∞1 = 320°C flows in a cast iron pipe (k =80 W/m · °C) whose inner
and outer diameters are D1 =0.05 m and D2 =0.055 m, respectively. The pipe is
covered with 3-cm thick glass wool insulation with k= 0.05 W/m · °C. Heat is lost
to the surroundings at 𝑇∞2 =5°C by convection, with a heat transfer coefficient of
ℎ2 =18 W/m2 · °C. Taking the heat transfer coefficient inside the pipe to be ℎ1 =60
W/m2 · °C, Taking L =1 m

1- Draw the thermal circuit for the wall.

2- Determine the rate of heat loss from the steam.

3- Determine the temperature drops across

the pipe shell and the insulation. (25 mark)

Q3/ A counter flow double-pipe heat exchanger operate with hot water flowing
inside the inner pipe and a polymer fluid flowing in the annular space between the
two pipes. The water-flow rate is 2.0 kg/s and it enters at a temperature of 90◦C.
The polymer enters at a temperature of 10◦C and leaves at a temperature of 50◦C
while the water leaves the exchanger at a temperature of 60◦C. Calculate the value
of the overall heat-transfer coefficient, if the area for the heat exchanger is 20 𝑚2 .
C pw  4180 J/kg. C (25 mark)

Q4/ A) Fill the blanks: (15 mark)

1. To maximize the heat transfer, the wall should be _______ and __________.
2. Heat capacity rate is _____________________.
3. The flow is laminar when Reynolds number ___________ and it is turbulent
when Reynolds number ___________.
4. Correction factor depends on __________ and ___________.

B) A10m long section of a 0.06 m diameter horizontal hot water pipe passes
through a large room whose temperature is 22°C. If the temperature of the outer
surface of the pipe is 65°C, when Nu= 13.15 determine the rate of heat loss from
the pipe by natural convection? The properties of air at 43.5C
k  0.02688 W/m. C,   1.735 10 5 m 2 /s, Pr  0.7245 (10 mark)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q5/ Water at the rate of 0.8 kg/s is heated from 35 to 40◦C in a 2.5-cm-diameter
tube whose surface is at 90◦C. How long must the tube be to accomplish this
heating? Properties of water: (25 mark)

  993 kg/m 3 , k  0.63 W/m. C,   6.82  10-4 kg/m. s ,

C p  4221 J/kg. C , Pr  4.53
