Tugas 2

Read the following case, and what do you think about his teaching?
Mr. Santosa, a first –grade teacher of junior high school, was preparing to teach English concerning verbs
in English. His goal for that period is to train the students about transitive verbs. After greeting the
students and checked their attendance, he began his lesson by saying “I’m going to show you two
sentences, and I want you to learn them and tell me how the sentences are different” Then he wrote the
following sentences on the board.

1. The infielder, bobbing the ball momentarily, threw it in the nick of time.
2. They were late again for the start of first period of English
The students read the sentences, and some of them raise their hands to answer the questions.

Rudy: “The first sentence is longer”

Dina: “ The second one has a plural subject”
Febri: “ Isn’t the verb in the first sentence in the past tense?”
Dony: “ But so is the verb in the second sentence? And we supposed to find the
differences”

Mr. Santosa wrote all the students’ sentences on the board and commented “ Those are all good ideas”.
Ok, let me give you another example of the first kind of sentence and see if you can narrow your ideas
down” Then he wrote down the third sentence on the board.

3. The children ate the oatmeal cookies

“Look at the sentence again”, directed Mr. Santosa, and tell me how the first and the third are similar”
The lesson continued until the students saw that both the first and the third sentence had direct object.
Then Mr. Santosa discussed the idea of transitive verbs, relating to this idea to the examples the students
has used. To make the students understand the use of transitive verbs, Mr.Santosa asked the students to
work in pair to ask and answer using the given transitive verbs. He gave some examples:
Mr. Santosa: “What did you eat this morning?
Sinta: “I ate rice”.
And you, Heru, “ I ate some bread this morning.”
Ok, good. Please do like the examples using the transitive verbs I will write on the board”. Then he wrote
the verb on the board.
a. bring
b. send
c. borrow
“Ok, now please change role, you can use another transitive verb”. The teacher walked around the
classroom and paid attention to each pair to listen their conversation. The next activity Mr. Santosa put
the students into group of five. Then he distributed the text to each group. Each group was asked to
identify all the verbs on the text, then identify which verbs are transitive and which are intransitive. After
fifteen minutes the students finished the work. Finally the class discussed the result. Each group wrote
down the sentences on the board, other group gave comment. This activity continued until the bell rang
for another period with another subject. Mr. Santosa said good bye to the students.
