Human Flourishing

If we look around us, technology is everywhere! From the design of the buildings in our campus to the learning
system used by instructors and students in their respective programs. Those are all products of technology. But what is
technology? Technology has been defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes . Starting from
the early species of man, technology has already been used. It started when man used sticks and stone tools for survival .
Humans are very different from other species. Other species make artifacts: bees build elaborate hives to deposit their
honey, birds make nest, and beavers build dams. But these attributes are the result of patterns of instinctive behavior
and cannot be varied to suit rapidly changing circumstances . Humans, in contrast with other species, do not possess
highly developed distinctive reactions but does have the capacity to think systematically and creatively about techniques.
Humans can thus innovate and consciously modify the environment in a way no other species has achieved . A monkey
may on occasion use a stick to get bananas from a tree but a man can turn the stick into a cutting tool and remove a
whole bunch of bananas. By virtue of his nature as a toolmaker, man is therefore a technologist from the beginning

As time goes by, the virtue of man as a technologist continued and resulted to the evolution of technology .
Technology is now used by almost every man to accomplish various tasks in their lives . People use it in their work,
transportation, communication, business and even human learning . It allows them to extend their abilities, making man
the most crucial part of any technological system . Technology is a human knowledge that involves tools, materials, and
systems that when applied, it results in products that benefit humans .

At present, the effects of technology can now be seen to different platforms including art . Since the earliest cave
paintings, art now has evolved in tandem with the development of technology . Our increased obsession and reliance on
technology has created a wonderful inspiration for modern artists around the world, which in turn has ignited the
relationship between art and technology. This has been reflected in an array of new, cutting edge exhibitions around the
world. It did not only change how artworks are consumed but it has also changed how artists create it, how they share it,
and how we critique it. The relationship of technology and art also paved way for new genres and forms of art. If before,
the form of art that is only recognized is paintings, as seen on the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Pablo Picasso, now,
new forms have developed like photography, videography, new media art, digital art and many more . It also became
easier for artists to expose their work to a global audience by simply clicking “share” on any social media platforms.

Since social media now is a product of technology and art, it gave humans the opportunity to learn faster . With
the new means of tools that can be used to discover information, one can immediately access information in just one
click. However, human do not use these new forms to flourish but instead, they use it to wither . Instead of being a flower
flourishing when given the enough sunlight and water, they receive the opposite effect . This is because humans use
technology in the wrong means. For human flourishing to occur, one must recognize the importance of learning . A person
willing to learn will find a way to learn. But learning does not only apply when you gather information with the help of
technology, a human person can also learn or flourish when he or she learns from the past experiences .

To conclude, technology is everywhere and every person benefits in what technology has provided . It just now
depends to the person if he or she will use technology to flourish or let himself/herself wither during the process .
