PENDAHULUAN

A. Latar Belakang

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by Shakspeare. It is a tragic love story where the two
main characters, Romeo and Juliet. In the beautiful city of Verona, where our story takes
place, a long-standing hatred between two families erupts into new violence, and citizens
stain their hands with the blood of their fellow citizens. Two unlucky children of these enemy
families become lovers and commit suicide. Their unfortunate deaths put an end to their
parents' feud. Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy.

PEMBAHASAN

A. Theme
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story where two teenegers fall in love and commit
suicide due their families’ ongoing feud.

B. Setting
Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy in the 1300s, though it was written in
the 1500s. Shakespeare's Verona is not a fleshed out place as a real-life, physical city,
but rather as a convenient backdrop for a crazy story line.
Shakespeare set Romeo & Juliet in two different Italian locations. Most of the
action takes place in Verona and a small portion in Mantua.

C. Characters
1. Romeo
Romeo - The son and heir of Montague and Lady Montague. A young man of
about sixteen, Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Though impulsive
and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character.
He lives in the middle of a violent feud between his family and the Capulets, but
he is not at all interested in violence. His only interest is love.
2. Juliet
The daughter of Capulet and Lady Capulet. A beautiful thirteen-year-old girl,
Juliet begins the play as a naïve child who has thought little about love and
marriage, but she grows up quickly upon falling in love with Romeo, the son of
her family’s great enemy.
3. Friar Lawrence
A Franciscan friar, friend to both Romeo and Juliet. Kind, civic-minded, a
proponent of moderation, and always ready with a plan, Friar Lawrence secretly
marries the impassioned lovers in hopes that the union might eventually bring
peace to Verona.

4. Mercutio
A kinsman to the Prince, and Romeo’s close friend. Mercutio loves wordplay,
especially sexual double entendres. He can be quite hotheaded, and hates people
who are affected, pretentious, or obsessed with the latest fashions. He finds
Romeo’s romanticized ideas about love tiresome, and tries to convince Romeo to
view love as a simple matter of sexual appetite.
5. The Nurse
Juliet’s nurse, the woman who breast-fed Juliet when she was a baby and has
cared for Juliet her entire life. Acts as confidante and messenger for Romeo and
Juliet.
6. Tybalt
A Capulet, Juliet’s cousin on her mother’s side. Tybalt is violent and hot-
tempered, with strong sense of honor.
7. Capulet
The patriarch of the Capulet family, father of Juliet, husband of Lady Capulet, and
enemy, for unexplained reasons, of Montague. He truly loves his daughter, though
he is not well acquainted with Juliet’s thoughts or feelings, and seems to think that
what is best for her is a “good” match with Paris.
8. Lady Capulet
Juliet’s mother, Capulet’s wife. She is an ineffectual mother, relying on the Nurse
for moral and pragmatic support.
9. Montague
Romeo’s father, the patriarch of the Montague clan and bitter enemy of Capulet.
At the beginning of the play, he is chiefly concerned about Romeo’s melancholy.
10. Lady Montague
Romeo’s mother, Montague’s wife. She dies of grief after Romeo is exiled from
Verona.
11. Paris
A kinsman of the Prince, and the suitor of Juliet most preferred by Capulet. Once
Capulet has promised him he can marry Juliet.

D. Plot
1. Two wealthy families, the Montagues and the Capulets, have another brawl in the
city of Verona. The Prince and the townspeople cannot cope with the constant
fighting so the Prince declares that the next person to break the peace will be
killed.

2. Romeo Montague and his friends gatecrash a Capulet party and Romeo meets
Juliet Capulet. He falls in love with her instantly. They are shocked to discover
they are sworn enemies due to their feuding families. Friar Laurence marries
Romeo and Juliet.

3. Romeo goes to celebrate his marriage with his friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, but
gets into a fight with Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo
avenges his death by killing Tybalt.

4. The Prince banishes Romeo because he killed Tybalt. Both Romeo and Juliet are
heartbroken.

5. Capulet, Juliet's father, decides she should marry Paris. Juliet refuses and goes to
Friar Laurence where they come up with a plan for Romeo and Juliet to be
together.

6. Juliet fakes her death and lies in a tomb waiting for Romeo to come so they can
run away together. Romeo doesn't receive the message about the plan, so thinks
Juliet has actually died. He goes to Verona and sees Juliet in her tomb, 'dead'.

7. Romeo drinks poison so he can be with Juliet in death. She wakes up to discover
Romeo is dead. Juliet kills herself with his dagger.

8. The Capulet and Montague families vow never to argue again.

E. Dramatic Structure
1. Exposition
Romeo meets Juliet at Capulet house and fells in love with her.
2. Rising Action
Romeo needs to secretly marry Julirt fearing that a Capulet and a Montague would
never be allowed to marry.

3. Climax
Tybalt kills Marcutio, then Romeo kills Tybalt. And then Romeo is banished from
Verona.
4. Falling Action
Paris will soon be married to Juliet, and the Capulet don’t know about Juliet’s
secret marriage. Juliet decides to fake her death with a poison.
Romeo is informed that Juliet is dead. Romeo arrives at the Capulet burial vault
ready to drink the poison the Apothecary sold him.
5. Catastrophe
Romeo drinks the poison and dies. Juliet wakes up, finds Romeo dead, and kills
herself with a dagger. After the tragedy, both families agree to stop the hatred.

PENUTUP

A. SIMPULAN
Romeo dan Juliet di pertemukan di tengah-tengah perselisihan antara keluarga
mereka. Mereka saling jatuh cinta, namun mereka merasa tak bisa bersatu. Di sisi
lain, keluarga Capulet berencana menyandingkan Juliet dengan pria bernama Paris.
Juliet menolak, kemudian memutuskan untuk mengelabuhi semua orang dengan racun
palsu. Kabar itu tersampaikan kepada Romeo yang di asingkan Mantua. Oleh karena
itu, Romeo kembali ke Verona dan mendapati Juliet sudah tertidur lelap. Menyangka
bahwa Juliet sudah mati, akhirnya Romeo meminum sebuah racun yang ia dapatkan
dari seorang ahli obat di Mantua. Romeo mati, kemudian Juliet terbangun dan
mendapati kematian Romeo di sisinya. Kemudian Juliet bunuh diri dengan belati.
Setelah tragedi itu, keluarga Capulet dan keluarga Montague memutuskan untuk
mengakhiri segala konflik.
