ABSTRACT

In this study, the researcher shall expose the main result obtained with the activated charcoal

air filters having different characteristics. Activated charcoal air filter in a specific room used as a

cleaner to lessen the polluted air, not totally, but it helps to lessen the person who experiencing lung

problems. Use of a particular paper thickness and channel dimensions, low volume, long lifetime air

cleaning filter is obtained.

CHAPTER I

RATIONALE

Polluted air can cause a harmful threat to our health. Air with biggest amount of carbon

dioxide can kill thousands of life even in just one second blinked of your eyes. Air filtration is one of

the inventions we must apply to our homes.

The air filter concerns corrugated paper filter structures using activated charcoal for

cleaning air. Such as that activated charcoal are employed in air filtrating machine in which, for

example, when air pass through an air filtration machine it simply removes , organic gases,

ozone, and NO2 from the air – flow absorption.

The gas removal efficiency is determined, along with the absorption capacity, by the

Quantity of effective active activated charcoal and by the structure of the filter.
3
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

One major problem why the researchers conducted this research is that the uncontrolled

pollution in the air. We tend to neglect this state, others are not aware that it can harm more to us,

we might get ill in this kind of situation. In Lapu-Lapu City specifically in Babag National High School,

because of the ongoing constructions of buildings, air is now polluted than before. You can now see

the dust when the wind strikes. This is just one of the problems of us thousands citizens now.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This study can help our community not only in this state but also it can help globally

because pollution is fast approaching, our ozone layer is slowly melting. Air filtration using activated

charcoal is the best technology we can use to lessen this pollution made by humans. It can also

prevent having an asthma attack to those have. It specifically removes unnecessary dust and

Particles that can help to lessen the pollution.

4
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In this study, it ranges up about a barangay if the machine is 4 times bigger. A one machine

can capture a whole room. This kind of air filter is really capable of doing its job. It is effectual;

however, there is a possibility but only a minimal chance that the process of filtering of air will be

difficult. Improvised air filter will benefit them in a way that all their wants and needs will be provided,

and satisfy them when it comes to what they most likely what to happen.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Activated charcoal – use in filtration process

Air – element that is use to be filtered

Filter – used to activate and successfully build the air filtration

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Activated charcoal filter layer for gas masks

Because of the varied possibilities of structuring the filter material according to the invention, the

shape of the gas mask filter can also be adapted to the most varied needs. For example, the filter

can certainly be housed in a hood mask, e.g. around the head or at the neck, and then serves as

additional head or neck protection against impacts. In this case, the filtered air should flow past

the eyes, in order to prevent fogging of the visor window. A plate-shaped filter can be worn on

the chest or back and connected with the mask element by way of a flexible hose. Cylindrical

filter elements with a diameter of several centimeters can also be housed directly in a flexible

hose, or be coupled together to form a hose, using suitable means. Such replaceable filter

elements can also have various functions. It is most practical if the inlet opening of the hoses

containing the filter elements or comprised of them is located on the inside of a protective suit.

Air cleaning material for use in air filters

According to Smissen C. E. V. (1985), the activated carbon is employed for cleaning breathing

air from noxious gases, for example in gasmask filters and air conditioning filters. To obtain a

satisfactory separation, the activated carbon is impregnated in various ways.

Air filter

According to Franz Tauch (1984), while he have illustrated and described the preferred form of

construction for carrying his invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification

without departing from the spirit of the invention. He, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the

precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail himself of such variations and

modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

6
Air filtering device

According to Backus A. (1990), that an air cleaning device produces a vertical plane of moving

air to block migration of airborne impurities from one area to another, and to create a low

pressure area which remotely attracts impure ambient air to it. The device may have one or more

restricted air inlets orthogonal to the vertical plane of moving air, with restrictions creating

increased air velocity at the inlets resulting in a low pressure zone which attracts impure ambient

air to the inlets. A single stage activated charcoal filter which removes chemicals and odors may

be provided within the device, as well as an ionizer which electrostatically removes particulates.

Air purification electrostatic charcoal filter and method

According to Manfred R. Burger (1981), that air purification filter is provided which has a

housing; an inlet in the housing for air to be purified; a microporous filter medium, activated

charcoal, which is placed in the housing so that the air to be purified passes through this

microporous filter medium. The microporous filter medium serves as an electrostatic filter, with

the air, including the particulate matter in the air, being charged to one polarity just prior to

reaching the microporous filter medium, and with the microporous filter medium itself being

directly charged, with an electrode at the downstream surface of the microporous filter medium.

In a preferred embodiment an odor neutralizing medium bearing a charge opposite to that of the

microporous filter medium is placed upstream of the microporous filter medium.

Development and evaluation of systems to collect volatile semiochemicals from insects and plants

using a charcoal-infused medium for air purification

A system that is described for the collection of volatiles produced by plants and insects that

minimizes stresses on the plant or insect in an environment that is free from chemical impurities.

Air entering a volatile collection chamber containing insects and/or plants was purified using a

7
nonwoven fabric medium infused with charcoal.(Manukian A., 1992)

Electrospun Nanofibers for Air Filtration Applications

According to Tan K., et. al. (2014), the activated carbon and fiberglass are widely used in air

filtration industry. Nanotechnology field is booming in an exceptionally impressive manner.

Nanofibers are one of the unique materials which have one order of magnitude smaller than

conventional fibers. The high surface-to-volume ratio, low resistance and enhanced filtration

performance make nanofibers an attractive material for many applications such as healthcare,

energy and air filtration. Recent advancements in the removal of volatile organic compounds

(VOC), nanoparticles and airborne bacterial contaminates in the air are highlighted. The aerosol

filtration performances of nanofibers are also presented. The enhanced activity of nanofibers due

to the nanosize and their applications such as in protective clothing are highlighted.

Odor Control with Activated Charcoal

According to Burton S., et. al.(1974), that they over-all efficiency of the pollution control system,

as well as the economics of the solution, often dictate the kind to be installed. But whether the

system is composed of a combination of types of equipment or activated charcoal alone, the

activated charcoal, where properly used, will eliminate or control the odors.

Odor filter media

In view of the foregoing description, it should be apparent that an odor control filter may be

constructed which possesses improved odor removal efficiency at equal or lower pressure drops

and yet may be manufactured more economically than comparable prior art filters. Test results

have indicated that filters constructed in accordance with the present invention have improved

odor control qualities between two to five times greater than present competitively marketed

odor control filters at comparable pressure drop values. (Pontius H., 1984)

Plate-shaped disposable active charcoal filter

According to Gerhard Max Neumann (1971), that the disposable active charcoal filters

according to the invention may be disposed in a filter-channel casing either horizontally, vertically
8
or obliquely. The subdivision of the active charcoal layer into a plurality of compartments ensures

that settling during operation will not cause the formation of free gas channels through which the

gas current to be purified can pass without thoroughly coming into contact with the active

charcoal.

11
CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DICUSSIONS

The air filtration machine that uses activated charcoal, can eliminate the hazardous chemical

gases, reduce airborne diseases and odors in the air. The present invention provides a method for

the purification of gases, finding particular applicability in the removal of smoke and kitchen odors in

closed systems, such as restaurants, kitchens, and the living residences and offices. As opposed to

grid filters requiring frequent exchange of problems in reducing odors particularly after prolonged

use, the present invention provides an air purification filter comprising: a housing; an inlet in the

housing for air to be purified; a filter medium in the housing so that the air to be purified passes there

through; an outlet in the housing for the purified air; means for directly electrically charging said filter

medium to one polarity; and means for electrically charging the air to be purified to an opposite

polarity upstream of the filter medium so that they carry that charge when entering the filter medium,

whereby when the charged particles enter the filter medium they are attached to the oppositely

charged filter medium and held thereby and separated from the air.

SUMMARY

Polluted air can cause a harmful threat to our health. Air with biggest amount of carbon

dioxide can kill thousands of life even in just one second blinked of your eyes. The uncontrolled

pollution in the air. We tend to neglect this state, others are not aware that it can harm more to us if

we didn’t care of it or to do something to reduce it, we might get ill in this kind of situation. Air filtration

is one of the inventions we must apply to our homes, that helps to clean the air that is full of chemical

gases. Air filtering machine that uses activated charcoal is the best way to clean the air with no

harmful effect to the environment and to the human health. Air filtration device is provided for intake

of atmospheric air, assistance in removal of contaminants from the atmospheric air, expulsion of

filtered air and configured for operational association with a generally vertically oriented surface. The

device includes housing defining an air flow path there through having a front surface, at least one

side surface and a rear surface; at least one air inlet formed in the front surface of the housing; and at

least one air outlet formed in the housing intermediate the front surface and the rear surface, for

cooperation of the air outlet with a generally vertical surface to which the air filtration device is

associated for enhanced dispersion of filtered air expelled through the air outlet. A filter is mounted to

the housing in the air flow path and an impeller is provided for moving air through the housing along

the air flow path from the at least one air inlet to the at least one air outlet, with the impeller being

mounted to the housing. The machine was effective to eliminate the hazardous gas particles and also

removed the unpleasant odors of the air.

13
FINDINGS

The air filtration machine using the activated charcoal filter, has an effective result to eliminate

the hazardous chemical gases, reduces airborne diseases and odors in the atmospheric air. The

present invention provides an air purification filter comprising: an inlet in the housing for air to be

purified; a filter medium in the housing so that the air to be purified passes there through. When the

charged particles enter the filter medium they are attached to the oppositely charged filter medium

and held thereby and separated from the air.

CONCLUSION

Air filtering machine by the used of activated charcoal, has a big impact to eliminate and

reduce all the chemical gases, air-borne diseases , and odors in the air. The problem of air pollution

and other airborne diseases can be eliminated. It will, however, take time, money, and a combined

effort on the part of many people. In every part of the world, especially to the place who are over

populated, the rate of air pollution has been increased. Hazardous chemical gases from the factories

and vehicles, burning of woods and trash, and so on, are some of the all compounding factors in the

increasing rate of pollution in the air. Air pollution is a type of environmental pollution that affects the

air and is usually caused by smoke or other harmful gases, mainly oxides of carbon, sulphur and

nitrogen. In other words, air pollution is the contamination of air due to the presence or introduction of

a substance which has a poisonous effect. Many of the world's large cities today have polluted air or

low air quality. In every part of the world, especially to the place who are over populated, the rate of

air pollution has been increased. Hazardous chemical gases from the factories and vehicles, burning

of woods and trash, and so on, are some of the all compounding factors in the increasing rate of

pollution in the air. Many experts, are now starting campaigns to eliminate this harmful pollution in the

air. However, the treatments to eliminate air pollution is not easy it needs patient, time, money, effort

and the participation of every people.
