ABSTRACT
Wireless communication has announced its arrival on big stage and the world is
going mobile. We want to control everything and without moving an inch. This
remote control of appliances is possible through Embedded Systems. The use of
“Embedded System in Communication” has given rise to many interesting
applications that ensures comfort and safety to human life.
The main aim of the project will be to design a SMS driven automatic display
toolkit which can replace the currently used programmable electronic display. It
is proposed to design receive cum display toolkit which can be programmed
from an authorized mobile phone. The message to be displayed is sent through a
SMS from an authorized transmitter. The toolkit receives the SMS, validates the
sending Mobile Identification Number (MIN) and displays the desired
information after necessary code conversion. The system is made efficient by
using „clone‟ SIMs of same MIN in a geographical area so that the same SMS
can be received by number of display boards in a locality using techniques of
time division multiple access.
The results presented in the thesis support the proper functionalities and
working of the system.

1. INTRODUCTION

Mobile Phones and the related technologies are becoming more and more ubiquitous. Various
technical arenas in the field of Telecommunication and Embedded Systems have come very near
to the common people. The number of people with cell phones is on the rise. A day will come,
somewhere in the near future, when a mobile phone is referred to in the same class of Food,
clothing and shelter. Improvements in the Networking technologies have fostered growth of very
dense networks. Land line telephones have been becoming less and less popular and people now
prefer communicating while on the move.
When people have a good connectivity at their disposal, with tremendous power of mobile
computing to supplement the same, we can think of connecting their home appliances to a mobile
phone wirelessly. With this, people would be able to turn on and off, and to some extent, control
the appliances at their home even from a distant place. The usefulness of a long range remote
control to home appliances has no limits. A setup facilitating such a thing would be to connect the
home appliances to a microcontroller interfaced to a GSM modem that receives the controls from
the user, the means of sending signals to the appliances being a mobile phone.

1.1 MOTIVATION

Presently, the United States is the most technologically advanced country in the area of
telecommunications with about; 126 million phone lines, 7.5 million cellular phone users, 5
thousand AM radio broadcast stations, 5 thousand FM radio stations, 1 thousand television
broadcast stations, 9 thousand cable television systems, 530 million radios, 193 million television
sets, 24 ocean cables, and scores of satellite facilities. This is truly an "Information Age" and
sometimes, you need to look at where we've been in order to see the future more clearly.

1.2 INFORMATION
2. "A message received and understood"- Princeton
3. "Information is a term with many meanings depending on context, but is as a rule closely
related to such concepts as meaning, knowledge, instruction, communication,
representation, and mental stimulus " - Wikipedia
4. "any communication or representation of knowledge such as facts, data, or opinions in
any medium or form, including textual, numerical, graphic, cartographic, narrative, or
audiovisual forms"- Gils.net
5. "Facts, concepts, or instructions; any sort of knowledge or supposition which can be
communicated"- cedar.web
6. "Is organized data that has been arranged for better comprehension or understanding.

1.2 Need

Uses in Banks: There is a huge mass of population which depends upon the banks for all
their monetary transactions. To keep a proper track of such huge mass of people and their
transactions this technology helps with certain degree of effectiveness

Uses for Traffic Control : It‟s known to all of us that traffic are the good servants of the
people and also the major invention to help people but only if it is managed well. So with the use
of this technology we can maintain the flow of traffic according to the needs of the people and
also considering the availability of roads.
Uses for advertisement: We can make use of this technology to display the different
advertisement on display panels to reach the larger number of people at a time and in the
populated places like shopping malls, road sides as well as at the theaters, discos, hotels, motels,
restaurants etc. about their products and features.
Uses in Educational sector: Currently in India we are relying on the old style of displaying
news by hanging bare time consuming papers on the notice board which can be replaced by
remote controlled notice boards at the colleges and universities, also at the time of examination
scheduling and result publishing etc.
Stock Exchange: The stock exchange is the hot topic nowadays. There are millions of sales
of shares every hours and it is very necessary to maintain the real time services with the certain
measures of reliability because it deals with the money large number of the small or bigger
investors. With the help of this technology we can make it far easier and reliable.

2 . LITERATURE SERVEY

2.1 SUMMARY

This technical paper explains how a reliable and an authentic wireless communication could be
easily developed between a mobile phone and microcontroller using GSM (Global System for
Mobile Communication) MODEM (Modulator-Demodulator). This technical paper explains
GSM based e-notice board which can be widely used for multitude of applications including
educational sector, traffic control, banks, stoke exchanges, public advertisements etc. Moreover
we can also learn as well as modify some of the common applications of GSM MODEM as per
the requirements and needs of the user. Here we will learn the hardware behind the picture. This
technical paper plays a vital role in the state-of-the-art scenario where market window is
relentlessly shrinking and really need pocket-friendly and authentic products.

3. DESIGN OVERVIEW

3.1 Design on paper

As explained in the introduction chapter, the realization of complete potential of the display
boards and the wireless medium in information transfer is the major issue that the following
thesis of the following project deals with.

As we see in the above figure, there are at least three interfacing circuits, MAX-232 with
Microcontroller, LCD display with microcontroller, and MAX-232 with GSM modem. It is not a
hidden fact that interfacing a MODEM with a normal PC is quite easy with the help of the AT
commands sent to it from the Hyper Terminal window. But we must take into account the fact
that the MODEM requires a wired connection at one end and wireless at the other. Dedicating a
general purpose computer at each and every site of the display boards, although makes the task a
lot easier but is too expensive to be a possibility.
Hence we employ Philips P89C51RD2BN microcontroller. The complexity of coding
substantially increases, but once programmed the module works at its robust best since it is a
dedicated embedded system and not a general purpose computer. The design procedure involves
identifying and assembling all the required hardware and ensuring fail safe interfacing between
all the components.
Then we have the coding process which has to take care of the delays between two successive
transmissions and most importantly the validation of the sender‟s number. The number of valid
users can be more than one. The limiting constraint is the RAM of the microcontroller rather than
the coding complexity
