THE PRESENT PROGRESSIVE OR CONTINUOUS TIME

In this lesson you will find the following about the present continuous or progressive present:

use, structure, spelling rules and comprehension activity.

Use

There are two main uses for this tense in English.

1. Situations that are happening at the moment in which it is spoken.

The present progressive can be used to talk about actions that are being carried out at the

moment.

For example, "right now I am teaching English"; The "teach English" action is happening right

now. The same example in English would be:

“I am teaching English at the moment” / “I am teaching English right now”

When we use English to talk about actions that are happening at the moment we regularly use

keywords such as:

 “At the moment” (at the moment)

 “Now”

 “Right now” (right now)

2. The future:

Although it sounds a bit strange, the present continuous can also be used to refer to the future

(Go to the lesson on the future in English). Observe the following example:

 “I am meeting my boss tomorrow at 9 pm” / “I will meet my boss tomorrow at 9 pm”

In this example I am using the present progressive not to refer to this specific moment but to

refer to the future. The "meet my boss" action will happen in the future, specifically tomorrow at

nine pm.

I am going to give you a clue so that you never have this problem again: progressive present

refers to the future when it contains a temporary reference to the future such as:

 Tomorrow

 At (plus a specific time): at 7 am.

 After (plus an event): after lunch (after lunch)

If there is a phrase the present progressive and it does not contain a time reference to the future, it

will simply refer to the present.

Structure

Look at the structure in affirmative, negative and interrogative.
