From The Teachers
This Wednesday is a late start! The first
bell rings at 10:40 and we begin at 10:45.
Beginning this Monday, in order to prepare
for colder weather (which comes with boots, coats,
hats and mittens), we will change our beginning of
day procedures. Starting Monday, the first bell will
ring at 8:40 and students will enter the building and
go directly to their lockers/cubbies, as they did last
year. To assist our older students in getting to their
classrooms quickly, we will have 4th and 5th
graders line up and enter through door #3, which is
near the west stairwell. 1st graders will enter the
front doors, and all other grades will enter from the
courtyard. ONLY students getting off the bus and
eating breakfast will enter through the North (staff
parking lot) entrance.
It feels great to finally be done with the
litany of assessments that we need to administer at
the start of the school year! Reading groups will
begin next week, but individual conferring will begin
this week. Assignments are differentiated and will
appear in your child’s planner.

Social Studies/Science
Students are utilizing scientific method to
test specific variables in an attempt to identify
which characteristics of paper airplanes make them
fly the farthest.
Social studies instruction will involve
technology this week as students take a virtual tour
of the landforms found around our country. We will
also review the 5 themes of geography.
Math
We are working on subtracting across
zeros with larger numbers. This is a tricky concept
for a lot of students and often requires several days
of working on it before true mastery is achieved.
Thank you for your continued support in
helping our kids with math. Please continue to
write us notes, send us emails and check your
child’s math homework each night. Our partnership
with you is a crucial part of your child’s education.
Reading
This week will be our first week of reading
conferring. These are designed to meet students
where they are in meeting their literacy needs.
We are on unit 1, week 3 of our Reading
Street reading program. Students will be reading an
excerpt from, On the Banks of Plum Creek.
Spelling instruction will be done in small
groups and spelling words should be written in
student planners AND are also printed out on a
sheet of 3-hole punched paper. Our focal
comprehension strategy this week is to use story
elements such as the characters, setting and plot to
draw conclusions about the text.
Writing
We are working on creating suspense in
our stories by giving the audience enough
information to create a picture and feeling without
providing all the details. Your child may mention
that we are working on “show, don’t tell” in class.
This is a phrase we use to describe how authors
convey information without listing it.
