CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A computer is a mechanism that is used to make calculations or operations that

may done by numerical terms or logical. There are four types of computer. Science

computer studies theory and design that applies to a computer.

A computer game or Online Games is a game that is played in some kinds of

computer network. It is always use Internet or an equal of technology or whatever

technology is available; Modem before internet, a hard wired terminal before modem.

The expansion of online gaming is also subject to the overall transformation of computer

networks from small local internet networks and the transformation of computer

networks from small local Internet networks and the growth of the Internet itself. Online

games can range from simple text games to games with complex graphics and virtual

worlds with many players. Many online games often have the online community,

showing that there is a wide range of friendships in the same game as the game alone.

Computer games have a great impact on young people, especially for Garcia

College of Technology students because it is one of those time-honored stadiums, as well

as their stratigraphic or strategic thinking. The students of Garcia College of Technology

are well aware of what are the most popular games now that the elderly do not know

because teenagers today’s generation are born with technology that is highly developed.
Statement of the Problem

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Local Study

According to Kristofer Benigno (2017).in his survey in the Asian Institute of

Journalism and Communication, an average of 77% or nearly 8 out of 10 children play

online games in the Philippines, with Luzon reporting the highest number of gamers.

Now, these statistics surely coincide with all those “computer shop-hopping” I’ve done,

which is quite a lot. The first thing that you will encounter when entering a computer

shop here in Manila is a dozen (maybe even more) kids and teenagers flinging taunts to

and fro. No, they’re not fighting; they’re just playing video games. Most of the time you

will see them playing Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (or simply MOBA) games like

League of Legends (abbreviated simply as LoL) or DOTA. For higher-end computer

shops, some play first person-shooters, such as Battlefield 3.

According to Michel T. Vinluan (2016), Contrary to conventional beliefs that

playing video games is intellectually lazy and sedating, it turns out that playing these

games promotes a wide range of cognitive skills. This is particularly true for shooter

video games,” says the study. The study also mentions that people who tend to play

shooter games show “accurate attention allocation, higher spatial resolution in visual

processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities. According to NIKO Media Research,

the projected number of online computer gamers in the Philippines rose from 21 million

in 2012 to 28.72 million in 2014. Meanwhile, statistics from Juha Sompinmaki of Tech In
Asia show that about 409,000 of the gaming population of the Philippines is aged 18-24

years old.

Foreign Study

According Dockrill research in Australia involving more than 12,000 high school

students found that, when it came to internet usage, students who regularly played online

video games scored higher in maths, reading, and science tests than their peers who

didn't. "Students who play online games almost every day score 15 points above the

average in maths and 17 points above the average in science," says economist Alberto

Posso from RMIT University in Melbourne. "When you play online games you're solving

puzzles to move to the next level and that involves using some of the general knowledge

and skills in maths, reading, and science that you've been taught during the day.

According to Anonymous, in one of the most authoritative studies, a longitudinal

study of 3,000 third- through eighth-graders in Singapore, researchers from Iowa State

University and elsewhere found 9 percent of gamers to be “pathological,” meaning that

their gaming damaged multiple parts of their lives, including school performance.

Defense of the Ancients (Dota)

The Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) is a game of "Warcraft: Reign of Chaos"

which later became the "Warcraft: Frozen Throne". Its map is based on the "Aeon of

Strife" map of the Starcraft game. The purpose of this game is to destroy the enemy camp

infrastructure. Each player has an equivalent control unit. Similar to other RPGs, each

player aggregates gold for use while increasing their character level.
The map is made using the "World Editor" of Warcraft: Frozen Throne. Since the

DOTA game has been created, many changes have occurred and it has been called

DOTA 1. Different people are behind the development of this game. This game has been

involved several times in official events around the world. These include Blizzard

Entertainment's BlizzCon, Asian World Cyber Games, Cyber-athlete Amateur and Cyber

Evolution Leagues. According to Gamasutra, the DOTA is perhaps the most popular free

game in the world. Currently Valve Corporation produces the DOTA sequel of DOTA

League of Legends

The defense games of the towers have become so big this year, possibly reaching

the purest peak with the game Plants vs. Zombies. Combined the imagination of fantasy

defense ideas and MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Playing Games), and there is

the League of Legends, a multiplayer online-strategy game.

And there is an isometric place; the League of Legends is played online with two teams

with fifteen members. Each team has a base surrounded by towering towers. Beyond the

base of the opposing team. Each player is an amy Campaign, which has different classes.

These are supported by the growing supporters who accompany players on their journey,

and are often hit by opponents. The League of Legends is controlled through a keyboard

and mouse and is easy but there are some gadgets and special attacks for use in games

that make it difficult.

The League of Legends game is the battle of the protagonists' advocacy, destroying the

tower defense to make way to the enemy's fortress. At the time it is broken, you win. It

just looks easy! However, even though it is easy to learn and be entertained, the League

of Legends game takes a long time.

The League of Legends looks beautiful, with a cheerful and bright style, similar to the

World of Warcraft. Sound production is a beautiful and professional, which makes it a

free and beautiful game.

DOTA 2

Dota 2 is a free battleground in a plurality of internet players created and

cultivated by Valve Corporation. The game for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux

was released in July 2013, after the public "Beta Testing" stage started in 2011, becoming

the only one following the game "Defense Of The Ancients", a Mod for " Warcraft III:

Reign Of Chaos "and expansion pack" Frozen Throne ". Dota 2 is one of Steam's most

powerful games that extends beyond one million simultaneous players.

Dota 2 is played by two groups with five players each, and is based on every corner of

the map. A group will win when they break the "Ancient" of the opponent. There are 111

people with their own power and play style that can be chosen. While playing, each

player accumulates money, weapons, and "Experience Points" for their staff. Dota 2

started in 2009 with IceFrog, the leading designer of Dota Mod, after which Valve took

him. Earn lots of praise and Dota 2 for Gameplay, its production quality, and its loyalty
to its predecessor even though it is hard to learn. Used by Dota 2 and "Source Engine"

until it moved to "Source 2 Engine" in September 2015. This is the first Valve game that

uses the Source 2 Engine.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)

Counter-Strike (CS) is a series of video game shooter or first-person multiplayer,

where terrorist groups and counter-terrorists are battling in order, making a gesture of

terror ( bombing and hostage taking) and prevent and hostage them. The Windows series

began in 1999 in the first version of Counter-Strike. It was first released as a change for

Half-Life and designed by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" before the intellectual

property rights of the game were acquired by Valve Corporation, the developers of Half-

Life . The game was followed by Counter-Strike: Condition Zero in November 2004, the

game was a remake of the original Counter-Strike and the first in the series to run on the

new creation of the Valve Engine. The fourth game in the main series developed by

Valve was released in 2012 for Windows, OS X, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

CHAPTER 3

DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH AND METHODOLOGY

Description of Research

This study uses a descriptive research type, because it covers the current

knowledge of students about the world of "Online Games" by Garcia College of

Technology (SHS). From the five hundred and sixty-seven (567) Senior High School

students and this became two and twenty-nine (229) selected with multi-stage sampling.

Research Area

This research is being conducted at Garcia College of Technology specifically for

Senior High School students focusing on their knowledge of the world of "Online

Games". The Garcia College of Technology is the very first school for those who want to

become engineers in the province of Aklan. It was founded in 1968 by Don Florencio M.

Garcia and Doňa Enrica Reyes Garcia.

Respondents of the study

The respondents of this study are Grade 11 students of Garcia College of

Technology second semester Year 2017-2018. Grade 11 students of Garcia College of

Technology are divided into three strands. This strand is Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy and Business Management

(ABM), and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS).

To find out the total number of Grade 11 students of Garcia College of Technology,

STEM-Pioneer Grade 11 students make a letter asking for a list on the registrar's office of

all Grades 11 students at Garcia College of Technology who will be used for the research

conducted by Filipino teacher Bb. Joan R. Quindor and the principal approved by Mrs.

Maria Ruella P. Lachica. After obtaining a Grade 11 list of students, researchers ask for a

copy to find out how many students in each strand use multi-stage sampling.

The total number of Grade 11 students of the Garcia College of Technology is five

hundred and sixty-seven (567) Senior High Schools divided into three strands. After

identifying the total number of Grade 11 students of the Garcia College of Technology,

the success of the researchers was to determine how many would be the respondents of

the study.

To get the sample size, the formula used by the researchers is:

𝑁𝑍 2 + [𝑝(1 − 𝑝)]
𝑛=
𝑁𝑑 2 + 𝑍 2 [𝑝(1 − 𝑝)]

Wherein:

N = Population

n = the desired sample size

Z = the standard normal deviate, set at 1.96, corresponding to 95% level of confidence
p = the proportion in the target population estimated to have a particular characteristic, 50

percent (.50)

d = degree of accuracy desired, usually set at either .50, .025, .01

Step 1: The next step is to take a sample size on each strand using Stratified

Random Sampling shown in Table 1. All Grade 11 students will be based on their strand.

STEM has two and sixty seven (267) students, ABM has two and fifty-six (256) students

and HUMSS has forty-four (44) students education. The sample size is one and three

(103) in ABM, one hundred and eight (108) in STEM and eighteen (18) in HUMSS.

Table 1. Population Sampling, Fraction, Sample Size, and Percentage

Distribution of Responses per Strand.

Strand Population Sampling Sample

Size Size

ABM 256 256/567x229 103

STEM 267 267/567x229 108

HUMSS 44 44/567x229 108

Total 567 229

Step 2: After obtaining the sample size of each strand using Stratified Random

Sampling, find out who the responders are. Using the list that comes with the Registrar,

the names of the Grade 11 students are numbered in each strand. This is done by

Systematic Random Sampling with a random start. The STEM student is digitized from

one to one and eight (1-108), the ABM student is equipped with numbers from one to

several and three (1-103) and the HUMSS are the student is placed number from one to

forty-four (1-44). After numbering the names in each strand the next step is to get the

Sampling Interval (k).

The formula used is:

k=N/n

Wherein:

k = sampling interval

N = total number of students

n = number of responders

After completing the sampling interval (k) of two (2), the next step is to make the

choice of a number in each strand as random start. Pick a number from 1-267 to STEM,

1-256 to ABM and 1-44 to HUMSS. The numbers chosen by the researchers as random

start are hundred and twelve (112) for STEM, sixty-eight (68) for ABM and twenty-two

(22) for HUMSS. Since the numbers have been chosen for each strand, the researcher has
begun taking a sampling interval (k) two (2) to find out who are among the research

respondents.

Research Instrument

In this study, researchers produced questions that contained knowledge about the

Grade 11 students of Garcia College of Technology in the world of "Online Games". The

questionnaire has eleven sections: the first section contains personal information of

responders such as name, gender, and strand; the second part contains what "Online

Games" the respondent knows; the third part contains a question of what often played by

"Online Games" responders; the fourth part contains what gadget or device is used by the

respondent playing "Online Games"; the fifth part contains how much time the

respondent plays "Online Games" every day; the sixth part contains how much a playboy

can spend playing "Online Games" every day; the seventh part contains who is a member

of the respondent playing "Online Games"; the eighth part contains if the E-money

respondent uses "Online Games"; the ninth part contains what benefits the respondent

gets to playing "Online Games"; the tithe contains if the respondent about "Online

Games" is watching; the eleven part contains who are known by the famous players of

"Online Games" in the world where respondents freely choose more than one answer

from the options. The respondents choose their answer and tick (/) the box of their chosen

answer.
Research Methodology

The method used by researchers is the use of the questionnaire for survey work. Before

surveying the surveys conducted, surveyors were able to determine the correctness and

correctness of the questions by correcting their teacher Bb. Joan R. Quindor. After

completion, it is approximate and follow letter to request permission from the school

principal Mrs. Maria Ruella P. Lachica. The researchers began conducting surveys with

respondents after the principal's approval.

Data Analysis

Data analysis uses Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences or

(SPSS) to analyze data from the results of the research. Descriptive data comparisons

such as frequency counts and percentages are used in the study.
