BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This chapter provides the problem and its background. Included in this chapter are

the research questions to be answered by the research, the study’s objectives, significance,

conceptual framework, scope and delimitations, and the definition of terms.

Statement of the Problem

This study attempts to analyze the mise-en-scene elements of all six (6) Filipino

horror movies starring the manananggal throughout history.

Specifically, this paper aims to answer the following sub-problems:

1. How is the manananggal depicted in all six (6) Filipino horror movies from the

mise-en-scene elements in terms of:

a. decor;

b. lighting;

c. space;

d. acting; and

e. costume

2. How do these mise-en-scene elements of the manananggal change throughout the

history of Filipino horror movies?

3. How can the manananggal be portrayed considering the advancements in film

production mise-en-scene in today’s time?


CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains the method of the research process. It provides information

and data concerning the method that was used in this research. This chapter mentions

various stages in conducting research, consisting of the research type, research method,

data collection techniques, data sampling, data analysis, and the ethical considerations. The

purpose of this study is to understand the portrayal of the manananggal in Filipino horror

movies throughout history.
