ABSTRACT
The use of chemicals as additives to food (food additives) is currently often found in food and beverages,
including fishery products. One of the additional ingredients in food is a chemical preservative that serves
to slow down food damage. One type of preservative that is often used is formalin. In the trading world,
37% formaldehyde solution in water is called formalin. Formalin is a colorless clear liquid with a pungent
odor. Formalin is carcinogenic so it is very dangerous for health. Formalin is also mutagenic or causes
changes in cells and tissues, is very corrosive and also irritative. The purpose of this practicum is to know
the qualitative test of formaldehyde, which is to find out whether or not there is formaldehyde content in
marine animals traded. Samples used in this practicum are marine biological materials which are sold in
supermarkets, namely squid, vaname shrimp, selar fish, mackerel and green mussels. The positive result is
the presence of formalin with the addition of the atilin test kit consisting of AL-A and AL-B reagents ie the
change in color of the solution to purple. Based on the practicum that has been done, it can be concluded
that all the samples that have been studied show negative results (by marking there is no color change in
the sample), i.e. none of the samples contain. This is because the test samples purchased at supermarkets
are fresh and clean and formalin free.
