CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Practical Research is one of the applied subjects under the K-12 Curriculum of DepEd. According

to Kothari (2006), “Research is a pursuit of trust with the help of study, observation, comparison and

experiment, the search for knowledge through objective and systematic method of finding solutions to a

problem.” On this applied subject, the students must conduct a study that is related to the students’ chosen

strand and track. That is, if you are a STEM student, you must conduct a study that is related to science

and technology; if you are an ABM student, you must conduct a study that is related to finance,

entrepreneurship, and etc.; and so far, so on. The purpose of research is about testing theories, often

generated by pure science, and applying them to real situations, addressing more than just abstract

principles (Shuttleworth, 2008).

As this is a subject, the tasks that are conducted on this subject are graded. The tasks include the

following but not limited to: research title proposals, chapter defenses, and final defense. Research title

proposals are one of the most crucial tasks for the Practical Research subject, as this will set the pace of

the following outputs. That is, this is the base of all outputs for the said subject. Thus, someone, whether

be it an individual or a group, is pressured to come up with a unique research proposal if they want to be

successful on the subject. In other words, gain a high grade on the subject. The aforementioned pressure

will be piled up along with parental pressure and peer pressure, which is a common reason and motivation

of honor students. Our present grading system announces results in a quantified manner in the public.

This affects the psyche of a student, as they will feel ashamed and inferior to their classmates if the public

knew that you received a lower grade than everyone else. As most of the honor students do not want to

experience the shame of having a low grade, they will make the necessary measures just to maintain their
grades. If they got a low grade on a task, especially research title proposals, they feel a wide array of

emotions.

Rejection is a complex emotion. Amongst suggestions that it leads to alienation, isolation and

shame (Vickers & Parris, 2007), are those that individuals have a lifelong irrational fear of rejection

(Tools for Relationships, 1999). Some examples are tied to specific situations such as job loss, rejection

from an internal promotion, rejection following an application to a college or university or academic

paper submission (for example Vickers & Parris;Newell, 2000; Parham, 2007;Gans & Shepherd, 1994).

With regards to academic rejection (being rejected from a paper submission or request for grant

or funding), the researchers noticed that little literature exists on how research title proposals affect the

emotional aspect of honor students. As with that matter, they have established a set of research questions

that can guide in conducting the research study, such as “How does an honor student feel when their

research title proposal gets rejected?”; How does an honor student perceive the rejection of their research

title proposals?”; How does an honor student deal with these rejections on their research title proposals?”

These are some of the questions to be investigated in this research in order to give a better understanding

and grasp about the subject matter and provide solutions to the main problem. Along with these are

researchers’ determination in finding relevant and substantial results for the benefit of inspiring further

ideas that may be used on future studies.

The researchers have formulated research purposes that are parallel to the aforestated esearch

problems. One major purpose of the study is to (1) identify how does honor students feel if their research

title proposal gets rejected; to (2) determine the perceptions of honor students on the rejection of their title

research proposals; and to (3) identify how honor students deal after being rejected at their research title

proposals. This will serve as a guide to identify how rejected research title proposals affect the emotional

aspect of the honor students. Furthermore, for the convenience of the students in this research, the

researchers will provide tools such as modules and test questionnaires regarding the subject matter along

with the statistical treatments for the better comprehension of the results and data, thus making the
research relevant and worth investigating. However, this study might not cover some concepts that the

future researchers may cover even though the subject matter has been introduced.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PURPOSE

The researchers of this study, entitled “The Effects of Rejected Research Title Proposals on the Emotional

Aspect of Selected Grade 12 Honor Students of Philippine Christian University Dasmariñas in the year

2019-2020", aim to answer the following research questions:

1. How does an honor student feel when their research title proposal gets rejected?

2. How does an honor student perceive the rejection of their research title proposals?

3. How does an honor student deal with these rejections on their research title proposals?

These are the set of questions established in this research. Along with these are the following objectives

of this research that will signify the goal of this study. The researchers are tasked to do the following:

1. To identify how does honor students feel if their research title proposal gets rejected.

2. To determine the perceptions of honor students on the rejection of their title research proposals

3. To identify how honor students deal after being rejected at their research title proposals.

C. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The study will focus on the effects of rejected research title proposals on the emotional aspect of

selected Grade 12 honor students of Philippine Christian University. This study will not cover other

problems that are not considered relevant to the title. However, the study will use learning strategy such

as surveys or questionnaires to get specific and secured information. The research will strongly base on

the information from the selected Grade 12 honor students, considering the study limitations, we are not

going to conduct s survey with Grade 11 students. We also focus on honor students for the reason that
they are most likely to be grade conscious individual. They have higher possibility of gaining emotional

effects when it comes to rejecting research title proposals.

The study will be based on the results of numerical data and statistical tools rather than the

qualitative approach since we will use surveys and/or questionnaires. And with that results, we are able to

identify different effects of rejected research title proposals to the emotional aspect of honor students. We

focus on their emotional aspect rather than the other aspects such as physical and mental because this

topic may answer set of questions that are helpful for students.

D. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research study is completed and conducted to directly or indirectly generate benefits to the

following:

a) Teachers - The teachers will be able to know how the rejection of research title proposals affect

the emotional aspect of the Grade 12 students who are part of the honor roll. In that way, they are

aware of what actions should be taken in those kinds of situations.

b) Parents - Parents can serve as the motivation of the students. And since then, they are the ones

who live together with the students. In a way that they are aware of this they will be able to know

how to handle and help their children if ever they encounter these situations.

c) Students - As students are taking up their Senior High School year, a research paper is a must for

everyone. Thus, our research paper can be used as a reference in terms of dealing with rejected

research title proposals and also they would be able to know how to deal with the effects of this

towards their emotional aspect.

d) Future Researchers - The future researchers will be able to use this research paper as a part of

the references in the future. And also with themselves as a researcher who may experience

rejection of their research title proposals they will be able to determine what they should do if that

happens to them.
