This course is intended as an introductory survey of some significant European plays In translation. The
idea is to familiarize students with a major genre of European Literature. The plays themselves will be
read in class, studied in detail and analyzed. Backgrounds to European theatre as a whole will be
provided and critical discussion will be examined. It is essential for each student to have a hard copy of
the text in class. Students will be shown film versions of the plays where possible. Multiple genres within
Drama like the Classical Tragedy, the Peasant play, Epic Theatre, the Absurd Play, Romantic tragi-
comedy, the Mystical Play etc will be studied. The plays start with classical Greece, moe on to the 19th
century and end with the late 20th century.

Modes of Assessment 40% of the evaluation will be based on internal assessment which will consist of the best two written
class tests out of three and 60% will be from the end semester examination..
