1 /WHAT IS ASSESSMENT ?

Assessment is a process. It’s purpose is to improve student

learning through effective feedback.Assessment involves
the ongoing process of collecting and interpreting data for
the purpose of improving understanding and adjusting
teaching(In essence assessment and learning are two sides
of the same coin.As students engage in an assessment
exercise, they should learn from it as well.

2 /PURPOSES OF ASSESSMENT
-The primary purpose of assessment is to improve student
performance.
-Identify learner’s special needs.
-Select appropriate curricula to meet learner’s individual
needs.
-Communicate with parents to provide information about
their children’s progress and learning.

3/OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT.

Assessment(either summative or formative)is often
categorized as either objective or subjective.
Objective assessment is a form of questioning which has a
single answer:(true/false-multiple choice-matching questions)
Subjective assessment is a form of quetionning which may
have more than one way of expressing the correct
answer(essays)

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

Assessment is the systematic collection of data to monitor
the success of aprogram or course in achieving intended
learning outcomes(ILO).For students assessment is used to
determine:
-what students have learned(outcome)
-The way they learned the material(process)
-Their approach to learning before, during or after the
program or course.
Assessment in education is done in order to improve the
process. You can assess before instruction to get abaseline of
what students know.During instruction ,assessment can be
used to determine what students are learning so you can
adjust your teaching. After instruction, you can use assessment
for two purposes 1/to determine if there has been achange
inknowledge.2/to provide you with information to revise the
class program.
EVALUATION/*:Is a judgment by the instructor or
educational researcher about whether the program or
instruction has met its intended learning
outcome(ILO).Evaluation is determining the value of
something.
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT
There are three types of assessment. These are
diagnostic,formative and summative.
1/DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT:Also known as pre-assessment,it might be
helpful to think of diagnostic assessment as testing that occurs before
instruction. It can provide educators with information about each
student’s prior knowledge before beginning instruction.Educators can
use a diagnostic assessment to assist them in developing lesson plans
and providing differentiated instruction to meet students’ needs..It also
allows for identification of gaps in prior learning. These assessments are
used to gather information about what students already know and are
able to do.
THE PURPOSE of diagnostic assessment is to ascertain, prior to
instruction each students’
strengths,weaknesses,knowledge,and skills.Establishing these
permits the instructor to remediate students and adjust the
curriculum to meet each pupil’s unique needs.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTs: Also known as educative

assessment,classroom assessment.Occur throughout the
learning process .They provide multiple opportunities for
students to demonstrate attainment of identified targeted
goals without concerns about grading.AN IMPORTANT
ELEMENT OF FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT IS FEEDBACK.
-It informs students of their progress
-Encourages students extend learning.
-Offers students an opportunity to improve.
-Provides students redirection.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT:Is a high-stakes type of

assessment for the purpose of making final judgments about
students’ achievement instructional effectiveness.Saumative
assessment is generally carried out at the end of a course or
project. They are typically used to assign learners a course
grade.Saumative assessments are evaluative.
EXAMPLES OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS:unit
test/projects/final copies.
