Expectations of Student

• ALL students need to undertake Essential Reading and

viewing of videos before Active Learning Seminars.

• ALL students must be prepared to complete 10 Multiple

Choice Questions for Seminars 02-11 during Active
Learning Seminars.
eTests
• Whilst attending each Active Learning Seminar (02-11),
students are expected to complete an eTest to ensure
learning opportunities are maximised. An eTest is a
computer based test used to assess learning outcomes.
• eTests are also valuable preparation for fully participating in
the Active Learning Seminars.
• Each eTest consists of 10 randomly selected Multiple Choice
Questions that contribute 20% (i.e. 10 seminars × 2%) to
the overall mark for Business Capstone.
eTests
• A Choose your own eTest feature has been added.
• For each seminars eTest, students now have the option to
complete one out of a choice of two eTests.
• This has helped to address the Evaluate concerns given by
students that there were too many journal articles to read
and videos to watch for a 2% weekly eTest.
eTests
• Conditions for eTest Multiple Choice Questions:
o Each eTest must be done in the Active Learning Seminar.
o Only one attempt is permitted for each eTest.
o 10 minutes is provided for completing each Seminars
eTest (10 questions = 10 minutes).
o An eTest must be completed in a single session.
o Each eTest is marked by Blackboard and the results made
available in Grade Centre in ‘My Grades’ when complete.
eTests
• Learning material in the eTest includes:
o Business Capstone Unit Outline.
o Capstone® Business Simulation.
o Capstone® Team Member Guide.
o Capstone® video segments linked from QR (Quick
Response) Codes.
o Required Readings (Reading List).
o Video lecture segments (Unit Coordinator and Experts).
o Selected Video Business Interview background question
videos.
eTests
• Students are permitted to refer to paper copies of the journal
articles, Capstone® Team Member Guide and/or hand written
notes in ENGLISH during the eTest.
• Typed notes are not permitted.
• Copies of questions and/or answers (hand written or otherwise)
from any source are not permitted.
• Students must not use any electronic documents, nor access the
internet, when doing the eTest.
• The possession of unauthorised material in an eTest or any other
form of cheating or attempting to cheat in an eTest is not
permitted, and will be referred to the appropriate committee for
Academic Misconduct.
eTests
• Please be aware that these questions are intentionally
challenging, as would be expected in a final year Bachelor
of Commerce unit.
• Where multiple answers are correct, the questions are
‘zero biased’.
• Correct answers have positive marks.
• Incorrect answers have negative marks.
• Selecting all answers will generally result in zero marks.
• A negative mark cannot be awarded for any question.

Video segments Emotional Intelligence
“an emotional intelligence competency is an ability to
recognize, understand, and use emotional information about
oneself or others that leads to or causes effective or
superior performance” (Boyatzis and Sala 2004, 149).
Emotional Intelligence
(Goleman, Daniel. 1999. Working with Emotional Intelligence. London, United Kingdom: Bantam Books)

Goleman emotional intelligence comprises following characteristics:

• Self-Awareness – ‘the ability to recognize and understand your moods,
emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others.’
• Self-Regulation – ‘the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and
moods’ and ‘the propensity to suspend judgment – to think before acting.’
• Motivation – ‘a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or
status’ and ‘a propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence.’
• Empathy – ‘the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other
people’ and ‘skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions.’
• Social Skill – ‘proficiency in managing relationships and building networks’
and ‘an ability to find common ground and build rapport.’
Leadership That Gets Results
(Goleman, Daniel. 2000 (Mar/Apr). Leadership that gets results, Harvard Business Review, 78, 2: 78-90)

Research by Hay/McBer identified 6 main leadership styles ‘each springing

from different components of emotional intelligence.’
1) Coercive – demand immediate compliance.

2) Authoritative – motivate people towards a vision.

3) Affiliative – create emotional bonds and harmony.

4) Democratic – build consensus through participation.

5) Pacesetting – demand excellence and self-direction.

6) Coaching – developing people for the future.

Leadership That Gets Results
Following styles impact directly on the ‘climate’ of organisations
comprising the following elements:
• Flexibility – how free people are to innovate.
• Responsibility – the sense of responsibility people have to the
organization.
• Standards – the standards that people set.
• Rewards – the accuracy of performance feedback.
• Clarity – how clear people are about mission and values.
• Commitment – how committed people are to a common purpose.
Switch between the 6 styles EI can be learned but has to be practised.
Business Capstone provides opportunities to develop EI capabilities
Team Allocation for Capstone®
• Tutors will randomly allocate students to Teams Andrews,
Baldwin, Chester, Erie and Ferris.
• Students are deliberately placed in diverse teams.
• Ideally, a student from each business discipline will be
allocated to each team of 5 students × 5 groups
(this is dependent on the make-up of the class).
• Meet and work with new people.
• Increase your business network.
• A computer driven Team Digby introduced to Capstone®
Business Simulation to moderate effect of industry
performance on simulation marks.
Decision Entry + Update in Capstone
• Follow the screenshots from Blackboard (linked from
Seminar 2) to enter decisions in Capstone®.
• Teams to become familiar with the Data Entry screens.
• Updating your Official Decisions regularly is essential.
• Different team members work on each page in turn so
everyone gets some ‘hands on’ practice.
• Just input the numbers as given. Because your team has just
been created, no strategy is required.
• Next class the team’s strategy will be implemented using
these same data entry screens.

Capstone® Business Simulation Footrace
• The Capstone® Business Simulation Footrace is a
stand-alone simulation competition that is FREE for all
students to participate in.
• This is available thanks to former students who
requested extra practice rounds to help them prepare
for the competition rounds.
• This is an optional tool for students to complete in
their own time outside of class.
Need more practice?
Capstone® Business Simulation Footrace
• The Capstone® Business Simulation Footrace can be
run by teams or by individuals. All participant teams
compete against a common set of computer
competitors. Participants can proceed at their own
rate, completing between 1-8 rounds in their own
time.
• The Capstone® Business Simulation Footrace will be
available until the Monday of Seminar 06 at which
time it will be disabled.
