Systems Design
Coursework 2019/20

Aim: The aim of this assignment is to encourage the student to research a topic
relevant to his or her course of studies and to present the findings in the form
of a technical paper and presentation.

Objective: To research, write and present a technical paper to an audience of your peers.

Length: Approx 2500 words (excluding diagrams, appendices, references)

1. Critically consider energy resources in a wide context, including m&e services

2. Evaluate air conditioning alternatives, transport systems and predict dynamic system performance
3. Solve complex network systems
4. Resolve conflicting requirements between systems and the building envelope
5. Design specific systems for non-standard application
6. assess, compare and apply suitable regulation and control systems
Solve complex problems and communicate solutions in the form of relevant IEE and BS electrical

regulations or their equivalent
8. Evaluate alternative strategies for sustainable M & E services

Subject: Choose a topic of interest to yourself, but agreed with your tutor

 The topic should involve an investigative approach to carry out

problem solving work in Building Services Engineering rather than a
description and general design project only.
 The paper should aim to shed a new and or interesting light on your
chosen subject.
 Layout should follow the standard investigative methods described to
you by your tutor.
 You will need to research the topic and your references must be listed
in the paper using the Harvard Method.

Timeline: Receive coursework Lesson 2

Agree topic with tutor Lesson 4 (by email)
Submit Final Lesson 16
Present paper Lesson 16

Marking scheme:

This coursework will carry 40% of the total module percentage. The module is
marked as 60% exam + 40% coursework. Each of these two elements must be
passed separately at 40% or above

This presentation will be marked:

 Technical content 20%

 Analysis of subject 20%
 Conclusions and Abstract and referencing 20%
 Presentation of paper (format etc.) 20%
 Presentation to audience 20%
