THE EXTENT OF THE INTEGRATION OF FOUR MACRO SKILLS IN ACCENTUATING


STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

The four skills of language (also known as the four skills of language learning) are a
set of four capabilities that allow an individual to comprehend and produce spoken language
for proper and effective interpersonal communication.

These skills are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In the context of first-
language acquisition, the four skills are most often acquired in the order of listening first, then
speaking, then possibly reading and writing. For this reason, these capabilities are often called
LSRW skills.

In an article published by GMA News dated February 2018, the level of proficiency of
College Graduates from the Philippines is lower than the target English Proficiency in High
School students in Thailand. This gives us a clear picture that the use of these four language
skills are declining.
As evident also in the result of the National Achievement Test, in the year 2014-2015
the Mean Percentage Score of Las Nieves National High School in English was 71.01%. This
shows the need to improve the performance of the students in Las Nieves National High
School in terms of English. Also, as an English teacher for eleven years, I have seen the need
to bring back the intensive use of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
The aim of this study is to determine as to what extent is the integration of the four
Macro Skills in the daily lesson of the teachers.
II. Research Questions
The study aims to identify the possible effects of using Listening, Speaking,
Reading and Writing in improving the academic performance of the students in
English.

Specifically, the study endeavors to answer the following questions:


1. What extent does the integration of the four macro skills is used by the English
teachers?
2. What are the effects of using Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing to the
students?
3. What intervention program will be used to address these four macro skills?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The proposed innovation and intervention in this study is the thorough


implementation of LAC session among English Teachers in Las Nieves NHS.

IV. Action Research Methods


a. Participants

The participants of this study will be the English teachers of Las Nieves
National High School.

b. Data Gathering Methods

A survey type of method will be used to determine if the teachers in Las Nieves
National High School are integrating the Four Macro Skills in their lesson.
