Socrates “There is no learning without

remembering”
Socrates is Father of Western Philosophy. His philosophy is Philosophy of Lifestyle.

He believed that philosophy should achieve practical results for the greater well-being of
society.

He attempted to establish an ethical system based on human reason rather than


theological doctrine.

He was a scholar, teacher and philosopher born in ancient Greece. His Socratic method
laid the groundwork for Western systems of logic and philosophy.

Aristotle “knowing yourself is the beginning of widom”


Aristotle is Ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, one of the greatest intellectual
figures of Western history.

Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, together with Socrates and Plato, laid much of the
groundwork for western philosophy.
Aristotle wrote an estimated 200 works, most in the form of notes and manuscript drafts
touching on reasoning, rhetoric, politics, ethics, science and psychology.
Plato “Courage is knowing what not to fear”

After Socrates's death, Plato traveled for 12 years throughout the Mediterranean region,
studying mathematics with the Pythagoreans in Italy, and geometry, geology, astronomy
and religion in Egypt.

Ancient Greek philosopher Plato founded the Academy and is the author of
philosophical works of unparalleled influence in Western thought.

As a young man, Plato experienced two major events that set his course in life. One
was meeting the great Greek philosopher Socrates.

Jeremy Bentham “Happiness is a very pretty is a

Jeremy Bentham is the real founder of utilitarianism. He argued that our actions are
governed by pleasure and pain.

He believes that Law should be based on a rational and empirical appraisal of effect on
human happiness.

John Stuart Mill “Originality is the one thing
which unoriginal minds cannot feel the use of.”
He was a British philosopher, political economist, and civil servant. One of the most
influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism, he contributed widely to social
theory, political theory, and political economy.

John Stuart Mill defines happiness as pleasure and the absence of pain.
He is one of the most influential British Thinker of the 19th century.
His ethical theory is the Utilitarianism.

St, Thomas Aquinas “A man has free choice to


the extent that he is national”
He was called the “Universal Teacher”.
He believes that moral thought is mainly about bringing moral order to one’s own action
& will.
He is one of the most influential thinkers of medieval scholasticism.Thomas held out
stubbornly against his family despite a year of captivity. He was finally liberated and in
the autumn of 1245 went to Paris there he studied under St. Albertus Magnus, a
tremendous scholar with a wide range of intellectual interests.
Immanuel Kant “Dare to know! Have the
courage to use your own intelligence “
Immanuel Kant was born on April 22, 1724, in Konigsberg, Prussia, or what is now
Kaliningrad, Russia.
He was the fourth of nine children born to Johann Georg Cant, a harness maker, and
Anna Regina Cant. Later in his life, Immanuel changed the spelling of his name to
Kantto to adhere to German spelling practices.

His moral philosophy is a philosophy of Freedom.


He said that without human freedom, moral and moral responsibility would be
impossible.

Ramon Castillo Reyes


Ramon Castillo Reyes was born in 1935 in the Philippines. He attended the Ateneo De
Manila University in Quezon City when he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956.

Reyes was one of the pioneers in the Philippines of the philosophical approach known
as existential phenomenology.
