Strategic Management: Session Plan

Attached are the readings. The session plan follows

Please note that students need to be informed that prior reading is


compulsory to attend the session. Students should also send ppt s (in
groups, either centre-wise or in pre-existing groups if they are already
formed) with answers to the assignment questions before the class to the
studio email.

Session 1: Appreciating strategy - Deterrence or cooperation?


Case: Matching Dell
Questions:
1. Can you calculate the cost advantage that Dell has over its rivals
because of its unique choices?
2. If you were IBM MD at that point in time, would you copy the Dell
decisions/policies to compete with them?
3. Why do you think Dell failed in the retail foray inspite of such immense
capabilities?

Session 2: Transaction costs and the choice between vertical integration


and contractual coordination
Case article: Japanese apparel distribution
Questions:
1. Why did vertical integration succeed in just a few segments of apparel
trade in Japan?
2. What do you expect would happen to the Japanese distribution systems
if the Japanese government agrees to US demands? Justify your
argument/opinion.

Readings:
1. Transaction cost, Coase
2. Fisher body controversy, Coase
3. Value chain and value grid

Participants should come prepared reading the assigned case (the concept
readings are optional) and should send in groups (centerwise, if existing
groups are not there) ppt wth answers to the questions. Class will start
with your presentation.
