B. Motivation
The teacher shall show a sample problem involving game of chance.
The teacher will toss a coin and roll a dice, the same way the gamblers do, in front
of the students

C. Analysis
1. What can you say about this objects?
2. How can you win when you play with this objects on a game?
3. How many times will you win or what is your chance of winning?

Discrete Probability Distribution

When a random variable is discrete, its corresponding probability
distribution is called a discrete probability distribution. A discrete probability
distribution is an equation, or a table that list all possible values that a discrete
random variable can take in together with the associated probabilities.

Example 1. A coin is tossed 3 times. Let X be the random variable denoting the
number of heads. The set of all possible outcomes are given in the first row of the
table below. The second row gives the values of the random variable X.

Outcomes HHH HHT HTH THH TTH THT HTT TTT

X = No. of Heads 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 0

Hence, the possible values of random variable X are 0, 1, 2, 3. The probability

distribution of X can be written in tabular form as:

X 0 1 2 3
P(X = x) 1⁄ 3⁄ 3⁄ 1⁄
8 8 8 8

It can also be written in equation form as follows:

1⁄ 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 0
8
3⁄ 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 1
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 8
3⁄ 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 2
8
1⁄ 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = 3
{ 8

Constructing Distribution

The graph of the probability distribution of a discrete random variable is

a set of disjoint points in a Cartesian plane. However, its appearance can be
enhanced by using a histogram like the one shown in Figure 1 below.
Corresponding to each value of the random variable is a rectangle with a shaded
area. The shaded area of each rectangle represents a probability.
To draw the histogram, the values of the random variables are used as
the midpoints, and are plotted in the horizontal scale. The height of the rectangle
is the corresponding probability and is drawn in the vertical scale. The graph of a
probability distribution is like a relative frequency histogram.
Remarks: There are two general rules which the values of all probability
distribution must obey: First, since the values of a probability distribution are
probabilities, they must be numbers between 0 and 1. Second, since a random
variable has to take on one of its values, the sum of all the values of a probability
distribution must be equal to 1.

E. Application
The class will be divided into two (4) groups and each will be assigned each
to tossed a coin four (4) times. Then, with their assignment, they will asked to
denote a discrete random variable, provide their respective values and
probabilities, and lastly constructs a graph.

F. Generalizations
1. What makes a random variable discrete?
2. What is a discrete probability distibution?
3. How to compute the probability of each random values? Explain.

IV. EVALUATION
Solve the following with complete solution and explanation. (1/2 sheet of paper)
1. A pair of dice are rolled. Let X be the random variable denoting the absolute
difference of the dots on the upturned faces of the dice. Give the possible values
of the random variable and compute their respective probabilities.
2. Based on your answer in number 1, construct a histogram.
V. ASSIGNMENT
