Many teachers struggle with finding out how to motivate students to learn, and this is especially
true when teaching Araling Panlipunan, because so many students find this subject boring. If you
feel your students are not as engaged as you would like them to be, use the following teaching
strategies to tap into their interests and help improve their chances of academic success

Tie topics to students’interest and connect what they know with what is happening in the real
world. This helps students see that Araling Panlipunan is not just in a textbook, but it is happening
all around them. Incorporate newspaper articles and magazines into lessons so students can see
current events.

We live in a visual world, and something as small as conveying a photograph or seeing a historical
event captured in a movie may just be the piece that captivates a student and keeps them engaged.
Find a powerful photograph and have students critique the picture. Ask them questions about what
the picture is trying to convey, and discuss as a class what they think happened before, during, and
after the photograph was taken. Search for a historical event that was captured on film and have
students become critical viewers and scrutinize the film.

Skits, talk shows and plays are a great way to engage students and motivate them to find a love for
Araling Panlipunan. Bring a historical event to life by having students act out a particular event in
history. Have students produce an event and assign each student a specific role to present to the
class. After each presentation have students discuss what they learned.

Problem-solving plays an important role in learning. Get students engaged and motivated by
challenging students to solve a historical pr obl em

Technology has a way to motivate students and keep them engaged. Whether your teaching a
lesson on the Presidents of United States or debating social issues, technology has a way to draw
(and keep) students attention.

Music can be a great way to captivate students into loving social studies. Offer students a glimpse
into whatever time period you are studying by discussing and listening to the music from that era.
Make it fun by challenging students to create lyrics from that era with today’s b eat s.

You can develop student interest and motivation in Araling Panlipunan by relating relevant content
and current events into their daily lives. Technology has also been a teacher’s saving grace in
holding the interest of all students. By combining these strategies, you can ensure that students
will find a love for social studies that will ensure their academic success in the future.

STUDYING ARALING PANLIPUNAN

TOWARDS A BRIGHTER FUTURE

How does a person value history? Many students define history as the important events happening
to our generation such as victory, freedom or war, elections, gatherings and so on from the past.
They find it boring because they feel like they have to memorize names and dates in an effort to
get a good grade. However, we can also consider our everyday experiences as history. Yes, every
person creates their own history such as recognition, awards and achievements, birthdays and more
accomplishments.

Should past history be replaced by the current issues? Even though, those events happened already
from the past and we need to focus on the future. It is still important to be the main part of the
classroom around the world from the past. For it gives us a sense of belonging that can help us
understand the modern world such as explaining the political, social and economic processes
which have been created before we were born in our society.

I think the question should be .How can History be taught better in our schools to benefit the
students? Therefore, as a teacher, make sure to deliver lessons in an enthusiastic way and help
make our young generation realize that we can never move forward without a strong understanding
of our past. History helps us learn the mistakes of the past and avoid them in the future. Our history
is our future. Only the people, fashion, toys change but not the History.

Definitely history is not that easy, however it is a cognitive process for us to know what had
happened on this planet that we are living on now. History is really important in shaping worldwide
values in the early years of life and teach them what is right to do for our young people.

Our K-12 program Araling Panlipunan Teachers are designated to help students understand fully
the importance of History in our daily experiences. Thus, teaching Araling Panlipunan should be
a perfect example inspiring students into maintaining a reliable and meaningful history including
themselves and the nation. In addition, our job as Araling Panlipunan Teacher is to take appropriate
history lessons from the past to current generations and make sure that teaching the subject should
equally go into teaching about our future.

MAKING THE TEACHING OF ARALING
PANLIPUNAN INTERESTING

It is quite a sad reality that most students find the Araling Panlipunan or Social Studies subject as
a boring one. Primarily, this is because the subject is dealing with history, economics and politics
and even of government, constitution and society. The contents of the subjective are highly
objective in nature that it should be taught in an exact and comprehensive way. This finds that
student boring and disinteresting sometimes.

Many teachers struggle with finding out how to motivate students to learn, and this is especially
true when teaching social studies. If you feel your students are not as engaged as you would like
them to be, use different teaching strategies to tap into their interests and help improve their
chances of academic success in the Araling Panlipunan subject.

Motivation would always hold the key for effective flow of academic activities in the classroom.
It ignites the interest of the students that must be sustained to achieve optimum learning
experiences. Though topics may be historical and quite serious in nature, an A.Pan teacher must
learn to tickle the attention of students.

In addition, the Araling Panlipunan teacher must make information relevant to the students and
their respective lives. Tie topics to students’ interest and connect what they know with what is
happening in the real world. This helps students see that social studies is not just in a textbook, but
it is happening all around them. Students are more likely to be engaged when they have an input
over what they are learning. Their motivation will rise and learning the content will mean more to
students.

Content subjects and concepts in Araling Panlipunan are rich in realistic bases and inspirations. In
this manner, students could bring historical events and social issues into life. Bring a historical
event to life by having students act out a particular event in history. Have students produce an
event and assign each student a specific role to present to the class. After each presentation have
students discuss what they learned. Through this, the teaching of Araling Panlipunan (Social
studies) becomes interesting and interactive at the same time.

Effective teaching of Araling Panlipunan is characterized as meaningful, integrative, challenging,

active and guided on the topical concepts of the subject. The teaching of Araling Panlipunan is
expected to contribute to the development of a holistically developed citizen who is aware and
knowledgeable of and critically analyzes current social issues and concerns in the local and global
level.
This might not be achieve if Araling Panlipunan teachers would always confine themselves in the
traditional way of teaching; they should set out of the box and venture new ways to make the
subject interesting and students’learning worthwhile. — oOo— The author is Teacher III at Betis

I – Rationale

Quality learning should be ensured in producing learners who are competitive in the present society.
However, it is quite a sad reality that most students find the Araling Panlipunan or Social Studies
subject as a boring one. Primarily, this is because the subject is dealing with history, economics
and politics and even of government, constitution and society. The contents of the subjective are
highly objective in nature that it should be taught in an exact and comprehensive way. This finds
that pupil will be bored and disinterested sometimes (Sun.Star Pampanga 31 Mar 2017).

In this regard, Grade 6 pupils of Tagbina Central Elementary School were experiencing
poor performance rating in Araling Panlipunan specifically those pupils belong in slow sections
because of lack of interest in the subject. Twenty pupils (20) out of 4 slow sections would probably
pass the quarterly examinations with the average rate of 77-79%. Knowing that these pupils passed
the subject is quite good, but the fact that their grades did not reach the quality education that the
department envisioned, many teachers struggle with finding out how to motivate pupils to learn,
and this is especially true when teaching Araling Panlipunan.

Motivation would always hold the key for effective flow of academic activities in the
classroom. It ignites the interest of the students that must be sustained to achieve optimum learning
experiences. Though topics may be historical and quite serious in nature, an A.P. teacher must
learn to tickle the attention of students.

The researcher believed that the poor performance rating of the pupils in Grade 6 Araling
Panlipunan have something to do with the learning ability and situation of the learners. The
researcher feels further that through implementation of “Chum-Chum System viz Plus System,”
program, wherein pupils with low performance rating will be paired with high achiever pupils,
thus, their interest and their performance rating in Araling Panlipunan will be improved.

II – Research Questions

Specifically, the researcher aims to answer the following:

1. How to motivate pupils to love Araling Panglipunan subject?

2. What are the reasons affecting the poor performance rating of the pupils in Grade 6 in
Araling Panlipunan?

3. What is the performance rating of Grade 6 pupils in Araling Panlipunan after the
implementation of “Chum-Chum System viz Plus System,” program?
III – Proposed Intervention

The pupils’ interest and performance rating will be improved through the implementation
of “Chum-Chum System viz Plus System,” program. In this intervention, the Araling Panlipunan
teacher will must make information relevant to the pupils and their respective lives. Tie topics to
their interest and connect what they know with what is happening in the real world to those pupils
lack of interest in the subject. This helps pupils see that Araling Panlipunan is not just in a textbook,
but it is happening all around them through their partner with high performance rating who will
give assistance in every activity that the subject requires. The schedule of activities such as role
playing and oral recitations will be announced prior to the actual day of performance for the
preparations and peer mentoring of partners. Results achieved on the day of the activities will be
recorded to see the effectiveness of the program. Adding plus points to the high performing pupil
who assisted them served as the motivation in improving their level of assistance.

. It is apparent that if AP is perceived by young people as not being valuable, then learning AP will be
adversely affected. With low levels of civic literacy and the apparent lack of public confidence in the quality
of AP teaching (Gallup,1981), it is increasingly urgent that social studies educators pay attention to what
young people, as well as others, might be able to tell us about ways to improve the AP program. Content
subjects and concepts in Araling Panlipunan are rich in realistic bases and inspirations. In this manner, pupils
could bring historical events and social issues into life.
