A Brief Self-Interview…

 What did you learn or what insights did you gain to reinforce your career interest and
how well suited are you to this field?
o I have learned about the competition and difficulty in the performing arts
business. I have realized that I must use my special skills and unusual abilities to
distinguish myself from those around me. Utilizing my abilities as a music
composer and academic scholar are insights I have gained regarding my career
interested. I have also fallen deeper in love with my craft, as I have undertaken
significant training at prestigious summer programs at the University of
Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, and Penn State University. Based on
observing professionals this past summer during an Equity production of Grease,
I firmly believe I am well-suited to this field because of my strong background in
acting, singing, dancing, and interpersonal communication.
 Do you still want to pursue this career or is it not a good fit and why?
o I still want to pursue this career, though my intended pathway in the business may
change. I need to be a part of professional theatre, as it is one of the greatest ways
I achieve happiness. Being solely an actor, however, is difficult. I am open to
pursuing the performing arts as an actor and writer/composer. I plan to use my
diverse skillset and multi-facet approach to forge a successful future for myself.
 What skills are integral for your career interest? Explain why.
o Important skills necessary for my career interest include acting, singing, dancing,
creativity, interpersonal communication, and risk-taking. As a performer, strong
artistic technique is needed to pursue professional work. In addition, creativity is
an essential element that allows actors to bring their personal lives and emotions
to their work. Creative individuality is by far the most important skill, as it
distinguishes actors from one another based on their interpretation of a text and
their emotional perspective. Communication is an integral aspect of performance,
as staging plays requires direct connection with other people. Risk-taking, though
often underplayed, allows actors to chase their dreams fearlessly without fear of
failing.
 What personal characteristics do you possess that will improve chances of success in this
career?
o My supplemental interests in math and music composition will increase my
chance of success in this field. Most actors strictly dedicate themselves to their
thespian craft. Though this is important, my diversity of interests allows me to
distinguish myself from my coworkers. Having a unique academic and artistic
perspective will hopefully intrigue employers and earn me professional work.
 How has faith impacted or affected your experiences?
o Faith has always served as a guiding influence. I have repeatedly encountered
God in prayer, and He has guided me in selecting to pursue this career path for the
benefit of others. Though I do not completely understand God’s long-term plan
for my life, my faith has guided me in affirming my love for this craft.
