Important word to know:  What it means:

Look and Say word (AKA:  A word that Scholars should know just by looking at it.
sight word)  They do not need to sound these words out. Example: the,
see, a

Green Zone  The state of feeling ready to learn, having a calm body,
focused attention, quiet voice, and a “motor” that’s running
just right.

Equation  A number sentence that tells the story of what happened

with the numbers in a math problem. We have started to
learn about equations for addition and subtraction.

Literacy connections: When you read with your Scholar, be sure to have
them read the words that we have been learning if you see them in your
texts/books. Some of the words we have learned so far: the, see, a, happy,
on, I. Scholars can follow along with your reading by pointing to the words as
you read them. Make sure they point from left to right and move down the
page. You can also point out other text features, such as punctuation, picture
labels, and interesting fonts. Think about what a bold word might mean
within the text or ask why the author made it bold.

Math connections: You can work with your Scholar on number sentences
(math equations) by holding up your hand when doing a math story problem.
For example, if you have three pennies and give away one, how many are left?
(Hold up three, put one down, two are left; your Scholar can write 3-1=2.)
Once your Scholar understands what you are representing with your hand,
let them have a turn to model the equation on their hand. Finally, when they
have a hold of this, ask them to create the story problem and model it. They
can even be in charge of writing the equation!

Use these flashcards to help your Scholar learn Look and Say words:

the  see  a

on  I  happy
