The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic expressions, the properties of real
numbers as applied in linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.
Performance Standards
The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and algebraic methods in solving
problems involving algebraic expressions, linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.
Learning Competency
The learner illustrates linear equation and inequality in one variable. (M7AL-IIh-4)

Motivation
An open sentence is a sentence that contains one or more variables. It can be true or false, depending
upon the values that are substituted for the variables in the equation. A value of the variable that makes
an equation true is called a solution or root of the equation
Illustrative examples:
11 − 5 = 6
This equation is false.
12 − 5 = 6
This equation is an identity.
𝑥+1=𝑥+1
This equation is neither true nor false.
𝑥−5=6
Examples:
1. 2𝑦 − 5 = 7 𝑦 = 6, 𝑦=2
When 𝑦 = 6; when 𝑦 = 2
2(6) − 5 = 7 2(2) − 5 = 7
12 − 5 = 7 4−5=7
7=7 −1 = 7
Therefore, 6 is a solution of the equation 2𝑦 − 5 = 7.
2. 8𝑤 − 2 = −10 𝑤 = −8 𝑤 = −1
When 𝑤 = −8; when 𝑤 = −1
8(−8) − 2 = −10 8(−1) − 2 = −10
(−64) − 2 = −10 −8 − 2 = −12
−66 ≠ −10 −12 = −12
Therefore, -1 is a solution of the equation 8𝑤 − 2 = −10.
3. 3𝑥 + 2 = 𝑥 − 6 𝑥=4 𝑥 = −4
When 𝑥 = 4; when 𝑥 = −4
3(4) + 2 = (4) − 6 3(−4) + 2 = (−4) − 6
(12) + 2 = −2 −12 + 2 = −10
14 ≠ −2 −10 = −10
Therefore, -4 is a solution of the equation 3𝑥 − 2 = 𝑥 − 6.
Evaluation
I. Tell whether each equation is true, false, an identity, or an open sentence.
1. 10 = 11 − 𝑥
2. −12 = −14 − 2
3. 5(2 + 5) = 24 − (4 − 8)
4. 5𝑥𝑦 = 5𝑦𝑥
5. 3(4 − 7) = 9 − 18
II. Check whether the given number is a solution of the given equation.
1. 6𝑥 − 5 = 7; 𝑥 = −1
2. 3𝑐 − 3 = −6; 𝑐 = 4
3. 2𝑒 + 11 = −5; 𝑒 = 3
4. −30𝑔 + 1 = −61 + 𝑔; 𝑔 = 2

5. 4𝑥 − 2 = 15; 𝑥 =
4
𝑏
6. 8+6 = 10; 𝑏 = 12
14
7. 5𝑥 + 4 = 2𝑥 − 8; 𝑥 = 3
8. 6𝑥 + 4 = 2𝑥 − 8; 𝑥 = −3
𝑎
