Review of Related Literature

For me as a k-pop fan and as an addict to k-dramas it has a good and bad impact to me

because watching k-drama and seeing my k-pop idols are my stress reliever, as a student we have

a lot of paper works to do and we should pass it on time, so in order to cope up with my stress I

watched k-dramas and participate in any k-pop activities here in Tacloban City. But it has a bad

effect on me also cause sometimes I forgot to do my assignments in school and get drowsy when

entering the classroom because of watching k-drama.

Most k-pop fans are teenager and college student. Melody of the music, features of their

k-pop idols, k-pop group presentation style, and their hard to memorize and unique killer dance

moves made their fans loved and idolized them, despite of the lyrics which they do not

understand. Because of k-pop there are fans that are now head over heels to them.

On the other hand k-drama also made Filipino youth to in touch with their drama. Klissly

Salak, 22, Caloocan City said “ hindi kasi sila corny kagaya ng mga telenovela. Funny ang facial

expression ng actors nila. Laging may sense ang story, kaso nga lang palaging may namamatay

due to cancer.” (STTPP 2013).

The popularity of Korean culture really contributed a lot in the country of South Korea

regarding on the rising of their economy because of TV dramas, films and music that attract

tourists that becomes just like a domino effect. These tourists bring billion of dollars into the

country. Korea is now enjoying double boom in economic and cultural fields (Anjaiah, 2011).
 Filipino youths are also influenced by the Korean looks, to have a Korean look is to

have a Korean hairstyles in order to have that Korean sense of fashion. Korean hairstyles became

trend in the Philippines today (Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, 2010).

(specifically music, TV dramas, and films) is known as Hallyu or the Korean Wave. The Hallyu

phenomenon is present and alive not only in the Philippines, but also in other parts of Asia (the

Korean Wave is said to first hit Japan), North and Latin America, and even in some parts of

Europe. The phenomenon has sparked the interest of several media and culture scholars all over

the world. Most of the studies done about the Korean Wave, however, focus on the role of the

Internet as the medium and the globalization aspect of the trend, rather than on the massive

fanbase that has emerged due to the phenomenon. Doobo Shim (2006) says that Hallyu was the

result of Korea‘s struggle to protect their culture from the threat of foreign influences at the time

when their market was opened to foreign pop cultures (particularly the Japanese) for the first

time. Furthermore, Dator and Seo (2004), quoting sociologist Habib Khondker, suggest that the

Korean Wave may also be seen as a form of pan-Asianism, a ―region-wide reassertion of Asian

identity‖ (p. 33). Mark James Russel (2008), however, contests the very idea of a ‗Korean

Wave‘. According to him, there is nothing Korean about the spreading of Korean pop culture

abroad—it is merely a product of globalization, and Korea just happened to be one of the first to

adopt the trend. Xiaochang Li (2009) offers an overview of how technology and new media

affects the audienceship and fandom of East Asian dramas. With none other than Henry Jenkins

as the thesis adviser, Li offers a 14 description of how online activity and consumption play
important roles in the creation and expansion of fandoms based on Korean dramas. (Jessamine

In our survey, most students in National Douliou Vocational High School of Home

Economics ＆Commerce have watched Korean dramas. There are two main effects of Korean

dramas on the students. One is the students’ academic performances. The other is what the

students do and buy after they watch Korean dramas. As the research illustrates, most students

don’t stay up watching Korean dramas. Therefore, we can learn that Korean dramas don’t pose a

negative effect on students. On the other hand, after watching Korean dramas, most teenagers

become Korean maniacs and actively participate in many activities, but they aren’t willing to

spend their money buying products related to Korean dramas. From our survey we can conclude

that Korean dramas are exactly popular with the students in our school, but watching Korean

dramas doesn’t bring them negative effects, no matter on their schoolwork or in their everyday

Based on the investigation of the influence the intensity of watching Korean dramas or K-

Drama is a positive and significant impact on the style of dress in adolescents aged 17-21 years

who were around Sleman, Yogyakarta, namely 0.045> 0.05, while the stronger influence

amounted to 0262. This shows that the higher the intensity of watching k-drama, the higher its

influence on the style of dress the teens. Based on these known dependent variable or dependent

 Now, people all over the world including Asia have fallen deeply into the K-pop culture.

K-pop culture has its own strong influences especially on young people, particularly teenagers in

some Asian countries. Here's are my study case for bad and good influence of K-pop.....

Let's start listing the bad influence....

BAD

1. Teens spend to much time watching music video, drama, searching information about K-pop

idols as a result they lack of sleep, staying up late and sometime skipping meal.

2. It can cause them by having eye diseases, memory loss or even tend to be depression-prone

and autism-prone.

3. They can suffer from physical, mental and psychological problem because of heavy K-pop

addiction.

4. It could also can distract their studies.

5. Lack of social contact and also affect relationships between children and parents

6. The temptation of buying their album or even drama.

7. Sometime they got too emotionally attached with the drama.

Good

1. Most Korean music has clean lyrics and positive message. They are far less likely to find

songs about partying, drinking or hookups rather than american song.

2.They use good languages.

3. Korean music video and on-stage performances feature has cleaner dance moves and less

revealing clothing.

4. The change to learn about a new culture and language for the first time and broaden our

perspectives.

5. Can make a lot of friends with similar interests.

Korean pop culture influence is becoming higher and higher in these days all over the world. The

youngsters today enjoy dances, music and concerts. The K-pop is one of the places where Koreans rake

it in. the Koreans are trying to step in the world's major economy zones with the culture. The culture,

the art become their greatest weapon. All over the world, the Korean dramas have shaken people's

hearts over 10 years ago. Nowadays, the TV channels in most of the countries are occupied by the

Korean programs. When their art, the culture is started to dominate in a certain country, the Koreans

start importing cosmetics to that country which are advertised by various pretty Korean celebrities.

Then followed the clothing, the food, and the electronics and so on.

The people who love K-pop are called as K-poppers. The Korean dancers are the most hard-

working people as far as I concerned and their dance moves are so brilliant. And they do have to

struggle just to get a place in the entertainment field because the singers, the dancers, the

performers and the artists are booming up day by day in Korea. Assaying their MTVs, it seems

that the Koreans use a lot of accessories than it needs. Some critics view as using a lot of
accessories is to conceal their imperfectness. On the other hand, it can be taken as that makes K-

pop stands out.

K-Pop fever all over the world

The K-pop is highly dominating not only in Asia but also in Western world. In Asia, what I've

seen, the teens from Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Myanmar are extremely

addicted to K-pop. In Yangon, 8 out of 10 teenagers would say the country they eager to visit is

Korea. More and more concerts are held. Unbelievable numbers of package tours to Seoul are

demanding. The youngsters here eager to learn Korean and Korean language centers are

booming up. Not exaggerating, all the people in Yangon know some Korean words like Hello,

Thank you, I love you, I miss you, I'm hungry, etc. Here in Yangon, the cosmetics stores employ

pretty Korean salesgirls (Most of them I've encountered can speak Myanmar very well.) With K-

pop, Korean foods are also becoming popular. People patiently wait more than 5 hours standing

in the crowd to get K-pop concert tickets. Teen girls wear fake glasses and keep fringes.

Applying make-up to look like a Korean girl, wearing big eye content lens are so damn popular.

The market for cutie style mini-dresses and mini-skirts are increasing.

In Bangkok, teen girls don't even say "Cheese", instead they say "Kim-Chi". In the Western

World, K-pop gave the first taste of Psy Gangnam style in 2012 which is the most viewed video

in YouTube history, with more than 2 billion views. US$ 8 million was generated through the

site.

In the early 2000s, Korean culture export was around US$500 million. But after Gangnam style

was exploded on the scenes, it jumped to more than US$4 billion. The South Korean government

transformed its focus, giving low-interest loans to culture industries, supporting on the launching
of agencies, and expanding the art in every schools and institutes.(
