Personal Project
Criterion A - Investigating

a) What are my personal interests? What is my idea and why did I choose it?

My personal interests have always been towards cars since a little child. I had uncles
and family that would influence me more into cars by purchasing me toy cars and
models. My imagination would go crazy when I would have a toy car in my car trying
to drive it everywhere I could possibly do such as on the television, walls, lounges
and many more. Over the past few years I have realised that cars are becoming more
futuristic and they are all becoming more environmentally friendly, I have also
realised that there are now collectors meaning they actually buy cars just to store it
in a garage.

Area’s like that are called mancaves because men love it in those types of places,
and they are obviously going to need car type furniture for a car mancave because it
a car collection and they will be needing things like speedometer clocks and half car
couches. Which gave me the idea of making an engine coffee table, I thought this
was the perfect product since it would fall under the category of risk takers. I choose
this product because it was what my heart went towards and I didn’t mind actually
doing it even though it is a very heavy product and really challenging to move
around and get it to different places.

b) What is my goal and why is it highly challenging?

The goal I created for my project was to create an engine coffee table a coffee table
that could actually be used for future uses. This product that I’ll be developing is out
of my area of expertise. For the project, I’ll need to enhance my design and building
skills in order to create it thoughtfully. My final goal is to put it to use in a mancave.
Possibly in my one in a few years.

In order to overcome this challenge, I will ask my uncle who is a builder/handy man
to assist me in the manufacturing of the coffee table. Having this help, will allow me
to make it to a better quality letting it last for a longer duration of time.

c) What is my chosen global context and how it is related to my idea?

Since my project has to do with my personal interests, I have chosen the global
context ‘Personal and Cultural Expression’ because it is a global context that I can
actually relate too. This global context is related to my idea by it stating ‘Personal’
which gives me the freedom of letting my mind head its own way.

The Global context that I have chosen also relates to my idea by ‘cultural’, this is
because my family is in a big interest and they love cars. My Cultural part is that my
family are all car enthusiasts meaning that this had a relation with my idea.
d) What is my inquiry question and how is related to my global context?
My inquiry question is “How is an engine coffee table going to benefit someone in
the future?”. This inquiry question relates straight to my personal project
topic/theme.

1) AESTHETICS: 7) SAFTEY:
The aesthetics of the product has to be shiny The safety features implied are things like the

environments.
2) COST: 8) TIMEFRAME:
The minimum cost for the project was $20 The amount of time that was spent constructing
and the budget is $200. Engine (with the engine coffee table was a total of 10 hours
everything) $80, Glass on the top $45 and which was plenty of time to make an engine

surface underneath. Total is $135. Saving a
total of $65 from the budget of $200.
3) AUDIENCE/USER/CUSTOMER: 9) FORM:
The audience is focused on car enthusiasts In this part of the product I got creative since I
since the product is a car part and they are had to make it look nice as possible. The design
the targeted audience that will be more was nice and compact with gave me the space of
interested to talk about the topic more getting creative with the outside part of the

and it and welding of parts that were loose.
4) FUNCTION: 10) ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
The purpose for this project is to show that The engine we used was a used engine that used
I can design and also make something to run and also the glass that we used was also
actually useful that will be used by used but just refurnished to be used again which
someone almost every day. gave this project a unique and great feel to it.
5) DIMENSIONS: 11) MATERIALS:
Size: Roughly 200mm X 500mm  Engine block
Weight: (Roughly 65KG)  Pistons
Depth: 300mm  Crank
 Glass
6) ACHIEVEMENT: 12) IMPACT:
The level of heaviness is quite challenging The impact that is product is going to have going
since it is an engine, my achievement is to be great because not that many people out in
that I was able to move the engine around the public a that great with car parts and this
and actually be able to maintain it by not table will give people the chance to learn about
getting any part of the metal to rust engines and also have some better knowledge
because it will not look good in other parts about cars so there a more car enthusiasts out
of the engine when I spray paint it. there to be talking too.

Criterion B – Planning
My project relates to my personal interests, and I have selected the global context
‘Personal and Cultural Expression’ because it is a global context expresses my
passion and ideals. This global context is related to my idea by it stating ‘Personal’
which gives me the freedom of letting my mind head its own way.

The global context I chose in relation to the ‘cultural’ part, is part of my family
customs. The love of cars that we all equally share is the reason why I am creating
this in the first place. We are all enthusiasts making it extremely exciting to turn my
passion into a work of art.

In my criteria I decided that I’d like to have it assessed on aesthetics, coherence and
content because these are the most important key points to point out in a task when
it is being assessed by. In my criteria I chose to make the marks go from 1-8, 1 is the
lowest mark possible and 8 is the highest mark possible.

In aesthetics I chose to focus the marking rubric on thoughts about the product such
as the design, specs and etc. In the coherence section I chose to have it marked on
the rubric about the attention and audience thought of the product. The content had
to be based on the construction of the product and the how it was maintained in the
environment, physically and mentally because when we had to think about an idea,
we had to think about the future and predict what was going to happen after we do
that action.

The research achievement that I have under took are how to take of old paint, I have
also research about how to get rid of rust which makes a really good benefit for me
while I was constructing the product since I had to respray it with new paint.
Therefore, this research has helped me a lot in the past year because I never knew
how to remove rust of paint of metal.

The changes that I have made to my criteria are changing the marks from 1-10 to 1-8
which gives the marking rubric a more professional look to it and more efficient
looking outcome for the marker of the criteria.
In this project I have used self-management skills a lot so I can always be on top of
anything when it comes to time. Such as these listed below:

Organisation: I used organisation because I wanted everything to be were there

meant to be at right time and also the right place.

Time management: Time is a very important part in this project because if you don’t
use your time efficiently enough then your product won’t be as what you expected. I
used a phone to remind me when to do anything that was relevant for the project
such as (weld the pistons together to the cranks so the table doesn’t fall over).
Therefore, time management is important in almost anything in your life.

Safety: the management of me thinking of how to make sure the engine coffee table
is solid is me testing different methods like experimenting this for safety reasons.

Healthy lifestyle: while doing this project I had to make sure I was hydrated and
health to continue working because if I got sick and there was lots of the product left
to do then it would mean that the product would delay even longer making my self-
management skills really poor.

Criterion C – Taking Action

My product achieves my goal in many ways such as the way I transported the
product was resolved by my dad using his Ute to get the heavy product to places
that it needs to be such as a mechanic for welding. The product also was really hard
to spray paint because when it was time for the spray paint It rained for
approximately one week which made the painting part of the product fall behind
and this also affect the rest of the step we were going to complete after spray
painting.

The changes that occurred were that I chose to change the colour from a solid
chrome to black and chrome which will give that look that will make anyone walks
past say WOW. Another change that occurred was when the joints of pistons moving
and I thought that I was going to glue it but then my dad gave me a great idea of
welding it, since my uncle is a mechanic and he knows how to weld I asked him for a
bit of help and thankfully he gave me some of his precious time at work. These are
the changes that occurred when I was going through the process of constructing the
product of the personal project.
Throughout this project research was one of the most important things since we
were handling the product because it was heavy 60 kilograms plus and whenever we
decided to move it somewhere, we would have to think about it move it over
because let’s say for e.g. I was wanting to move the engine block from the concrete
to the grass because I’m wanting to spray paint. I would have to use my thinking
skills to make sure I don’t put the engine block directly on the grass and also my
thinking skills have to be quick and smart so they can tell me that there should me a
mat on the grass so I don’t damage the grass or I should have a mask on for protect
of my breathing. These are skills I have used to construct the engine coffee table.

This project needed a great amount of communication because we needed to know

how we are going to design it, we sat down communicated about how we are going
to spray paint it, design it and get it transported. Communication is also important
when it comes to the shops because you are going to have to ask someone about
were something is which means it is a form of communication. When thinking about
the design we communicated about changing the colour of the product because we
wanted to make it stand out and also make it be unique from all the other coffee
tables out there.

Criterion D – Reflecting
The personal project was an enjoyable project because you could pick what you
want to do which I thought was great, people have so many excellent idea’s out
there and this project can make people like them out there’s dreams come true
because they can show their desire and passion the world in front of their very one
eyes. My product was fun to build because I found it was great to build something
you pick since you have the option to do it anytime and anywhere you want.

I think that my product did great with my criteria and I think that the product passed
all the outcomes the criteria had stated which mean’s the product has been
established very carefully. This product will possibly give a really good mark
according to the criteria it has smashed through every outcome making it one of the
best out there. I believe that this product will get full marks which means 8/8 and
that’s totally great because it means your marks will be good in the future as well.

The strengths of my product are that the metals are solid, and I have possible chance
of getting it destroyed or wreaked. Another strength in my product is that it is
beautiful which will make people smile and make them learn about car engine more.
The weakness of my product is that the product is very heavy and really hard for us
to move it around and get to place it needs to be.
The biggest challenge that I encountered was when the piston was moving and the
whole engine was moving side to side which meant that the table was not stable and
also it meant that it was dangerous. The solution to this was that I got the moving
joint welded which is nearly impossible for it to move anymore. This was great new
because I didn’t have butterfly’s in my stomach every time someone came close to
the table and the whole table accidently falls on them.

These are the strengths and weaknesses of my project:

Strengths of my product are that the metals are solid, and I have possible chance of

weakness of my product is that the product is very heavy and really hard for us to

Thus, this information above tells us that why a engine coffee table is a benefit for
the future and better generations.
