1. GERUND X INFINITIVE
Gerund (Gerúndio)

Usa-se o gerúndio:

2. Após preposições:
*Após uma preposição (about, against, at, in, of, for, on, after,
before, etc.), o verbo vem sempre na forma -ing; muitas vezes, a
preposição forma unidade com um adjetivo,
um substantivo ou verbo:
After resting I'll make the bed. (Depois que eu descansar vou
arrumar a cama.)

Without knowing what to do, I went home earlier. (Sem saber o
que fazer, fui para casa mais cedo.)

He is famous for singing songs.
(Ele é famoso por cantar músicas.)

She thanked us for helping her.
(Ela nos agradeceu por tê-la ajudado.)
I go shopping on Mondays.
(Faço as compras nas segundas-feiras.)
Do you feel like going home? (Você está com vontade de ir para
casa?)
- IT IS GOOD (É BOM):

It is no use talking to the headmaster. He won't help us.
(Não adianta falar com o diretor da escola. Ele não vai nos
ajudar.)
How about going for a meal? (Que tal sairmos para comer
alguma coisa?)

They objected to sitting in the smoking section. (Eles se
opuseram a ficar sentados na área para fumantes.)
2. INFINITIVE - INFINITIVO
You need not wait for her. (Você não precisa esperar por ela.)
I would make a cake for your birthday. (Eu faria um bolo para o
seu aniversário.)

modal, nestes casos ele comporta-se exatamente como os modal
verbs, ou seja, não se acrescenta -s ao verbo principal na
conjugação da terceira pessoa do singular; frases interrogativas
e negativas são feitas sem o verbo auxiliar do; e também é
seguido de infinitivo sem to. Estas formas* aparecem
principalmente em frases negativas (needn't), mas também são
possíveis em frases interrogativas e após a conjunção if.
Let me stay here with you. (Deixe eu ficar aqui com você.)

My parents let me go out with my friends last night.
(Meus pais deixaram eu sair com meus amigos ontem à noite.)
I'll do anything for you but wash your car. (Farei qualquer coisa
por você, exceto lavar o seu carro.)
She does not but cry. (Ela não faz nada além de chorar.)
Hou dare you say that? (Como você se atreve a dizer isto?)
Why not ask your neighbour for help? (Por que não pedir ajuda
ao seu vizinho?)

I didn't see you come in. (Não vi você entrar.)
I've heard he say that you were leaving. (Eu ouvi ele dizer que
você estava saindo.)
I'll just watch you play golf. (Vou apenas ver você jogar golfe.)
I'll have a beer rather than drink a wine, it's too hot today.
(Vou tomar cerveja em vez de vinho, está muito quente hoje.)
1. Após the first, the second, the third, the last, the only, the
next, etc:

gerúndio:
She was afraid of upsetting her parents. (Ela estava com medo
