1. Examine the magazines and/or advertisements your group has brought to class/you find online.
 What do you notice about the ads?
 What ideas, beliefs, values do they represent?
 What commonalities do they share?

2. Choose a topic for your group to focus on. Sample topics:

 portrayal of women in advertising
 portrayal of men in advertising
 portrayal of romantic relationships in advertising
 portrayal of minorities in advertising
 violence in advertising
 humor in advertising

3. Once you have your topic, review your ads. What do your ads suggest about this topic? Come up
with a thesis about your topic. For example, if we chose humor as our topic, we would have to
consider what is funny about ads. In the Super Bowl commercials, we noticed that much of the
humor comes from violence. Therefore, a thesis statement might be: American advertising often
suggests that physical violence is humorous.

4. Find 5-10 ads that support your thesis. If you cannot find at least five ads to support your thesis,
chances are, it’s not a good one, and you may want to switch your topic or revise it.

5. For each supporting ad, write a short paragraph explaining how it supports your thesis. Sample
paragraph:

This ad for a disposable camera features an older woman

holding a bouquet of yellow flowers and smiling into the
camera. The headline reads: “Take Your Mother-in-Law Out
and Shoot Her.” Obviously, this is a play on words, and on the
common American belief that mothers-in-law are annoying.
The ad copy continues: “With the WIX PIX disposable camera,
your customers can take their mothers-in-law out in the back
yard and shoot them and shoot them and shoot them some
more.” The word “shoot” not only suggests taking a photograph,
but also using a gun. However, viewers are meant to find humor
in the idea of shooting (perhaps killing) their mothers-in-law.

6. You will present your findings to the class either as a PowerPoint presentation or a
Posterboard.
