TOILET SMOKE DETECTION SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General ( f i g u r e I)

A. The airplane i s equipped w i t h a t o i l e t smoke detection system providing an

advisory function t o t h e crew about t h e presence o f t h e smoke in the
t o i 1e t .

B. The system consists b a s i c a l l y o f a smoke detector and a smoke d e t e c t i o n

panel f o r t h e f l i g h t attendant.

C. The system i s supplied from t h e 28 V DC BUS No. 2.

2. ~omponentD e t a i l s

A. Smoke Detector ( f i g u r e 2)

The smoke detector i s i n s t a l l e d i n t h e t o i l e t c e i l i n g .

The smoke detector operation i s based on t h e i o n i z a t i o n p r i n c i p l e .

There i s a small amount o f r a d i o a c t i v e source t h a t i o n i z e s i t s

surrounding a i r . The X - r a y s produced by t h e r a d i o a c t i v e source
ionizes t h e air i n s i d e an e l e c t r i c f i e l d between the electrodes P 1
and P2.

When a DC voltage i s a p p l i e d t o t h e electrodes, p o s i t i v e i o n s and

e l e c t r o n s move toward t h e negative and p o s i t i v e poles. It i s t h e
i o n i z a t i o n current.

When small p a r t i c l e s o f smoke enter t h e smoke detector, the ionized

a i r molecules adhere t o these p a r t i c l e s . causing the mass o f ionized
p a r t i c l e s t o increase.

(6) This increased mass of ionized p a r t i c l e s causes a decrease i n
velocity, thereby imposing a decrease t o the ionization current.

(7) The decreased ionization current, while the DC i s constant, causes

the electrical resistance between the two poles to increase too.

(8) The small variation o f electrical resistance in the ionization

chamber caused by the smoke i s so amplified t h a t a suitable output
signal i s obtained.

attendant's station.

(b) A i rpl anes equipped with forward toi I e t

-1 Thesmoke detection panel i s located i n the closet next to

the toilet.

(2) When the smoke detector output signal reaches an alarm level, an
aural alarm will sound and a 1i g h t will flash on the smoke detection
panel.

( 3 ) When the system i s operating properly, a green light will illurninate

on the panel. This 1 ight extinguishes when the smoke detector
produces an o u t p u t voltage at or above the alarm level.

(4) A test switch on the smoke detection panel allows a smoke condition
to be simulated and activates a1 1 associated a1 arms: aural a1 arm and
red flashing 1 i g h t . The green light remains off.

(5) A reset switch i s provided t o c u t out t h e aural alarm ( i n case o f

smoke detection). Once the reset switch has been operated, the smoke

detection.

(6) Smoke detection panel operation ( f i g u r e 4) :

(a) Power supply c i r c u i t (Block- 1)

-1 This c i r c u i t smooths input power o f 27.5 V DC t o 20 V DC and

supplies t h e smoothed power t o each c i r c u i t .

(b) F i r e detection c i r c u i t (Block-2)

-1 This c i r c u i t operates when the output o f the smoke detector

has exceeded the predetermi ned val ue.

(c) B u i l t - i n t e s t c i r c u i t (Block-3)

-1 This c i r c u i t always checks i f the output o f the smoke

detector i s w i t h i n the normal range. I f i t i s out o f the
normal range, the operation lamp i s extinguished and i n h i b i t s
the t e s t function described i n step (j).

( d l F l ashing c i r c u i t (Block-4)

-1 This c i r c u i t operates w i t h t h e alarm signal from the f i r e

detection c i r c u i t and causes the alarm l i g h t t o flash.

( e l O s c i l l a t i o n c i r c u i t (Block-5)

( f ) Aural signal control c i r c u i t (Block-6)

-1 This c i r c u i t operates w i t h t h e alarm signal from the f i r e

detection c i r c u i t and actuates t h e aural signal device
(speaker).

(g) Indication signal transmission c i r c u i t (Block-7)

-1 This c i r c u i t operates w i t h t h e alarm signals from the f i r e

detection c i r c u i t and f l a s h i n g c i r c u i t , and gives o f f the
signal t o cause the cockpit alarm t o sound (MAP).

(h) Chime signal transmission c i r c u i t (Block-8). if appl i c a b l e

-1 This c i r c u i t operates w i t h the alarm signal from the aural

signal control c i r c u i t and gives o f f t h e signal t o cause the
a1arm t o sound on t h e fl ight attendant's panel.

(i)Horn r e s e t c i r c u i t (Block-9)

-1 This c i r c u i t operates by means o f the reset switch. This

c i r c u i t stops the operation o f the aural signal control
c i r c u i t ( a t t h e same time t h i s c i r c u i t resets t h e aural
signal transmi ssion c i r c u i t).

(j Test c i r c u i t (81ock- l o )

-1 The t e s t switch allows the operating condition o f t h e smoke

detector t o be simulated and i t s output t o be increased up t o
the l e v e l reached i n case o f f i r e ( t h e t e s t switch a1lows the
function o f the system t o be checked).
