This week we are learning about
Comprehension, which is the ability to
understand what someone is reading. This is the
ultimate goal of literacy and all the reading
activities we have been doing thus far leads up to
this.
Reading Comprehension incorporates:
accessing prior knowledge, grasping vocabulary
and concepts, forming inferences, connecting
main ideas, and knowing a collection of strategies.
This week we are focusing on a student's ability
to Oral Ret ell a Narrat ive book . An Oral
retell helps teachers discover a student's
reading level of comprehension of what they
have read or what is read to them. For a
narrative or fictional story, a student needs to
be able to orally retell the main idea and
supporting detail, sequence of events, characters,
setting, plot, problem and solution, and response
to prompts.well, in order to have a high
comprehension level,

COM PREHENSION ACTIVITIES FOR HOM E
- Play board games wit h your children- Help your children read the
manuals of the board games and help them understand the rules. Play
board games that involve lots of reading to give them lots of practice.
- Cook or bake wit h a recipe- Cook a recipe with your child and let them
take over reading and making the recipe to see what they understand.
Help only if they ask.
- Read books t oget her all t he t ime and discuss t hem- The easiest way to
raise reading comprehension is by reading all the time and discussing
what is happening as you read to see if the child is understanding the text.
Ask about the characters, the events, and the problem and solution.
