Plan:
Bring the children to the mat and do an introductory game: Matou/Maui. Everyone needs to be standing up in
a circle.
● Set expectations from beginning:
○ We are in the classroom still so I do not want any screaming - we can still enjoy this game and
keep our voices at a reasonable level. If we cannot control the volume, then we will just stop
playing it.
● Matou for right and Maui for left.
● Clap once Maui fully around the circle then you can choose to change directions. If you hesitate or
say the wrong word you’re out.
● Play this for 5-10 minutes.
Once this is finished, get everyone back onto the mat and explain our WALT which is to learn the names of
body parts in Te Reo.
Start off by asking if anyone knows any to begin with - will probably come across common ones like puku
(stomach) or taringas (ears). Write these up on a blank body sheet and a black face sheet, then go through
the others, focus on ones used in memory game. Upoko (head), pakihiwi (shoulders), waewae (legs),
ringaringa (arms), ihu (nose), ngā karu (eyes), waha (mouth)
We are then going to use the question/answer format that was introduced last week: Link back to He aha
tenei? He pene tena? From last week.
Do this for a few of the new vocabulary words so they can get some extra practice in them. We are then
going to work on a memory game based off of the vocabulary - these packs can then be handed out to pairs.
If time, we can watch the head, shoulders, knees and toes video in Te Reo.
