A Sujotha Nayak Northeast India has been an education. The crux of this entire and continuing education is ‘Growing Together’ It was in the 1980s that I first heard about Arunachal Pradesh from my sister, a Sannyasini, serving in the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Girls’ High School, Khonsa, Arunachal Pradesh. The image I formed at that time was of people as pristine as the mountain air they breathed. I continue to. be as amazed today as I was then, Community life in Northeast is clear and precise. Decisions are arrived at by consensus. ‘Independent’ is foolishness; inter-connectedness, inter-relatedness, inter-dependence is wisdom, Be it in matters of assisting one another in cultivation, construction of homes, taking care of children, elders, guests, of marriage, of passing away, security, development, the entire gamut of life - family, village, groups of villages, inter-community and so on live on one mantra- growing together. On a visit to a village, we found our karyakarta now had one more wife. Both the wives lived happily like they were sisters. The new wife was in her late 20s/early 30s. A distant cousin of our aryakarta had passed away. The clan held a meeting and asked him to marry the cousin's wife. Reason: After her husband had died it was the duty of the clan to take care of her in all aspects in such a way that she continued to live a life of fulfillment and dignity, At Ziro we visited a karyakarta who had come from Itanagar to meet us. The Chang ghar was new. Her brother was working as LDC, posted in Sagali several hours away from Ziro. Bhabhiji was with him, The house was for Bhabhiji’s relatives! They were in higher secondary school at Ziro but could not get arom in a hostel! Brother built it so they could continue their studies! When it is ‘Growing together’. the definition of family seamlessly expands. In several places now-a-days, to be ‘practical’ is to be deceitful to ensure one’s perks and promotions and often sadly, to mar the growth of others; some in leadership roles look the other way when one’s own people behave unethically and yet be judgmental about others! In the ‘community life of the Northeast one can see that such sham gets detected and responded to; where need be there is punishment. Punishment is part of growing together. What Saama-daama-danda-bheda means in practice can be seen here. In most decisions, communities sit together; for issues that affect clans directly, the clans sit together. For repeated offenders, it is the family that decides. It could even be death. Why family? Firstly, family takes responsibility for both - the good and offensive behaviour of its members. 1 We 5 SV GROW ins “eagether Secondly, it preempts a possible sense of vengeance — which can take place if the decision had been taken by ones outside the family. One can understand such care and concern within families, clans, villages and community. The wonderful aspect is that this understanding stretches to inter community relationships too. Manyiang —the Apatani-Nyishi traditionally handed-down friendship continues. In fact the two communities revitalized it when they resolved to work out challenges that faced their communities. It was a community initiative, not a government one! Many communities have such inter-community relationships. They are nurtured during occasions such as marriages, festivals, etc. Their importance come to the fore to resolve challenges. At such times there might be fights that can have terrible consequences. Yet, even the dead One cannot but appreciate the manifestation here of the Advaitic truth that Swami Vivekananda speaks about, “Here and here alone the human heart expanded till it included not only the human, but birds, beasts, and plants; from the highest gods to grains of sand, the highest and the lowest, all find a place in the heart of man, grown great, infinite.” (“India’s Message to the World’, The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, volume 4, p.314). This is Dharma, this is Yelam — the eternal path that Lambona Golgi Bote Talom Rukbo sought to adapt for continuity. Itis this wise way of life that the indigenous faith movements seek to nurture. In so doing not only development but even the security of the country is taken care of. Ajit Doval - National Security Advisor, Government of India, and former Director - Vivekananda International Foundation, New Delhi, was asked to name qualities from the Northeast that the rest of the country could imbibe. Doval, who had spent several years in the Northeast, outlined three qualities. homogeneity, respect for women, and great sense of humour and liveliness. Of the first one, he says, “Tribal sentiment is basically one. ‘My tribe man - right or wrong. He is my man; I will die for him,’ That is what makes ita tribe. Ifthe whole India was a ibe... [would have no problem. You don’t need a National Security Advisor because then we will have the tribal instinct... Whatever is in the interest of one.. is in the interest of everybody. We all stay together, we all sit together.. There is a great amount of homogeneity in a tribe. If we can have that national homogeneity...” If we can have that homogeneity - we can grow together, itis a win-win for all —itis in short, Ek Bhaarat - Vijayee Bharat. ‘Towards that national homogeneity may we work and grow together. We love nature, we feel comfortable and blessed in the lap of Mother Nature, Nature has inbuilt supporting system of Growing Together. We Jeam from nature, we imbibe certain qualities from nature. A society which has the closest relationship with nature, gets the privilege of knowing the innate integral aspect of nature. The aspect becomes an integral part of the society and it get manifested in many different ways. Arunachal Pradesh, the land of rising sun is blessed by all the bounty of nature. In turn, the society has imbibed many qualities from the Mother Nature which get reflected in their day to day living. I wish to share few qualities which are beyond the comprehension of the elites of our time. Once in connection with the Swasthya Seva Manch karya of Arun Jyoti project, Sujatha didi and me went to Ngopok village near Pasighat after crossing mighty Siang river. We visited one of our karyakartas house as planned earlier. The Karyakarta introduced his parents to us. They looked quite old, After a while he told us why his parents are unexpectedly looking too old. In Adi society, there is a very good custom. If a couple has no issue then the husband’s brothers son becomes a son of that couple. He takes care of them as his own parents. In this era of utter disregard to the family ties, such custom is like a ray of hope. According to me this is the highest system of Growing ‘Together. The pain of infertility, which makes a person distress throughout his/her life is not felt due to such custom. No one feels the pain of infertility. In the same way in order to address the orphans, Arunachal has a very good custom. In Arunachal no one is left orphan. Ifa child becomes orphan, he/she is taken care by his/her maternal or paternal side relatives as their own, They take care of them so well that unless someone informs us we will not be able to know that the child is not their own. Once owned is owning in totally. All children of the family Grow Together. During my visits to different houses in different villages in connection with Sampark in Arunachal Pradesh I came to know about Polygamy system. Initially, I did not have any positive aspect of the system. But in due course, I was surprised to find healthy atmosphere in the system. Ihave observed. that in such a family, any child could go to any of the mother’s house and eat, sleep and play. No mother was seen in worry about fooding of her child at food time. She is accustomed to be sure that her child would have taken food in one of the mother's house. If the child does not return to house at night the same assumptions have been formed- the child is safe in one of the houses. I am sure these are absolute example of ‘Growing Together’ In addition to the above examples, the celebrations of the festivals in Arunachal Pradesh together i Saas eae = eae aac 7 Pee Pee rae Ze “Tegether with colorful dresses and happiness also exemplifies the concept of ‘Growing together’. In the construction of new house, the whole village is engaged. If some sad incident takes place also whole Village becomes part of it. This is called as Gaina. When in the modern world, all are after the pursuit of one’s own happiness, in the society of Arunachal Pradesh happiness and sorrow is shared equally by the whole village. Apart from the village life, the concept of Growing together may be perceived in every walk of life. When we were at Vivekanand Kendra Vidyalaya Tafrogam I was fortune to observe many instances of ‘Growing Together’ in action. In the Vidyalaya, parents were allowed to meet their children on second Saturday. In those days communication was not as easy as today and it was obvious that all the parents were unable to turn up for the same. If one parent reached from one village he / she used to call all children from that village and talk to them and found out if they were in need of anything. If any of the child needed something one parent could provide whatever needed. All children were his/ her children. First time when we introduced traditional dress as hostel uniform at Tafrogam I asked the students. what we were to wear as the top on it. Within a fraction of second, answer came Didi we would use same color top as the frock of the younger girls ... Growing Together is the Innate Nature of Arunachal We consider ourselves very fortunate to get chance to live with the people with such large heart. Let us all learn from the people of Arunachal and ‘Grow Together’ till we bring this prayer a reality . Pee Oger NCCE Cr cc Ros Mercy Atpresent she is at Kanyakumari Branch Kendujhar ikea nee \ — Wor Swine Growing Together: An Arunachali Approach °Q¢ Pranjali Yerikar Arunachal Pradesh is the land of Rising Sun, where nature is seen in its most beautiful forms - may it be virgin forest land or bountiful rivers flowing through them. Here nature and human life are inseparable. It is not we Arunachali people are just dependent on Mother Nature for livelihood but Mother Nature and Arunachali are taking care of each other at every moment of life. Arunachal Pradesh being the home of 27 major communities has a very beautiful bond between communities. It is not mixture of different cultures living in one land but it is a beautiful expression of One Indian Culture in different regions of this land. Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture is doing research for finding out these commonalities and strengthening the inter-community bonds. Finding commonalities is not a very simple task as these communities are apparently far different from each other, with varied dialects, different costumes, different customs but ultimately worshipping the Supreme Being everywhere in the nature. In this context, | remembered four incidents rather experiences | had during my posting in Arunachal Pradesh. At this moment | must confess that | understood the essence of Bharatiya Sanskriti (Indian Culture) in Arunachal only. | remember it was my first visit to Nyedar Namlo. | was not able to understand the Nyishi chanting but I was listening to it very carefully. When prayer was over, | asked about the meaning of very first prayer. | was surprised to know that it was similar to the ‘Sankalpa’ which is chanted before every Puja in Sanskrit. The priest told very clearly, “Didi, we are invoking Supreme Being in this altar and so in this invocation we are mentioning the address where we are inviting him”. The ‘Sankapla’ is also similar thing. This was an eye opener for me. This is what is Growing in tune with Culture. Itwas an evening when the phone rang up and we rushed to VKV Nirjuli, There was an attack on VKV Niruli Principal by some anti-social elements. For the safety of the girls they were kept in one room and as soon as we reached | was sent to that room to talk to them. | entered in the room and all girls gathered around me. They wanted to go out to fight with goons and save their Principal Sir. | was telling them that situation outside was in control and they need not worry about their teachers. One girl came to me and asked, “Didi, few days ago you told us about Rani Laxmibai and today you are worrying about our safety? This is contradictory, we are spirited like Rani Laxmibai, allow us to go and fight”. This was “Growing with Understanding”. “Traditional Systems: Change and Continuity’ of Nyishi community was a celebrated seminar conducted by Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture. There were so many papers but one paper was on ‘Manyang’. The paper was on traditional friendship between Nyishi and Apatani community. The communities which share the bounty of Mother Nature also share a bond of love. The stories of inter community feuds are told to separate these communities from each other but this paper on Friendship bond was not only strengthening the inter- —WorBwine Tegether community relationships but also community confidence. Manyang narrates story of these strong bonds which are transferred from one generation to other. This is the way of “Growing Together”. Smt. Higio Aruni didi entered Kendra Karyalaya and said, “Come Pranjali, we have to go somewhere.” | got ready and we moved together. After working together for Nyishi Seminar we often visit many places together and discuss a lot. While discussing with her in car | learnt that she wanted to do some new creation and | was amazed to listen her purpose. Nyishi community is the largest community of Arunachal Pradesh spread over 5 districts. As Arunachal is very rich in expressions of culture in its art forms every district represents different design of ‘Gale’. Aruni didi wanted to design such a “gale” which can represent all the designs together. It was not a simple task. There were so many hurdles on the way but she was determined and her team was spirited. Ultimately after 6-7 months continuous efforts it was possible to arrive at a design which TO MAKE A GREAT FUTURE INDIA, , a ‘THE WHOLE SECRET LIES IN represented all districts. It needs an ideal society to grow and realize its full potential. A society which provides environment conducive for growth of its members leading to overall social growth and development. A society with strong institutional frameworks that enables social and economic activities strengthening social cohesion, A society to incubate a better breed of young generation for man making and nation building. A society which balances its human activities for sustainable management of its resources and having a collective will to preserve nature. Does our society have these attributes today? The answer is perhaps ano. In fact, today our society is afflicted with so many social ills. Our youth are swayed by waves of social degradation. The crosswinds of materialism devoid of moral and cultural values have stressed our social fabric. The cultural ethos imbibed from our forefathers is diminishing. ‘The gap between rich and poor is wider. The blind race for materialism is creating a chaotic society where collective development has taken a back seat. The overall standard of education needs improvement. The drug addiction, alcoholism and anti-social behaviours are on the rise. The environmental degradation is posing a serious danger to our flora and fauna. The rampant exploitation of our natural resources is leading to imbalances and most of our rare species are at the edge of extinction. The society is disintegrating on the basis of clan, title, language, region etc. The unemployment 1 GUMIN REGO KILAJU (GRK) «+-4 collaboration of positive minds for social gronth. #Iungam Basar among the young population is a major problem. Alll these are threatening the age old peaceful coexistence of our people, even though we are blessed abundantly by Mother Nature. We have land resources, rivers, forest and we are culturally very rich, yet our society is degrading day by day. The reasons are not far to fetch. The analysis reveals that the lack of wisdom, knowledge and direction to our younger generation is one of the main reasons Now, how can we retrieve our age old glory? Can we lend our collective efforts for building a society which is at peace with itself? Can we make a society where collective growth and development is its core ideal? But who will lead in evolving such a society? Is it the duty of our leaders? Is it the duty of our Government? Does each members of our society have any role? Is it alright to sit idle and lament? BIRTH OF GRK MOVEMENT: Keeping all these in minds, in the year 2012, all the Officers and Officials of GORI and SOI villages of LEPARADA DISTRICT of Arunachal Pradesh decided to come together to work on many issues afflicting our society. They formed a non-governmental organisation called as Gumin Rego Kilaju(GRK) and started works of social reforms and changes in micro level. It was a Zcollaboration of all positive minds for social growth. It became a people’s movement very soon. The guiding thoughts which inspired the humble beginning of GRK as people’s movement was to do something together or put efforts collectively to improve our society instead of WoRSwine waiting the Government or a leader to come and do it for us. The belief that no angel is coming to help us unless we do it ourselves was the guiding principle. The realisation has dawned upon our people that one cannot bring positive changes to the society by lamenting and blaming the prevalent social conditions. It can be reformed and given a new direction by collectively joining hands and work on the issues of social importance. Hence, the idea of ‘doing instead of lamenting’ and changing the attitude to WE, OURS AND US from earlier mentality of I, MY AND ME. It was felt that itis, time for sharing our knowledge to our people by involving ourselves collectively and to provide guidance and direction. It was also time to collectively harness the energy of all the likeminded people and channelize their energy for lifting our society out of this chaotic and moribund social state. Whoever has a positive bent of mind is welcome to join this movement without hankering for individual recognition. It was the time to pay back ones root by silently lending helping hands physically, mentally and financially according to one’s capability and walking together towards positive social growth. This social movement of GRK was launched on 6th Dec, 2012 amidst the huge presence of people of Gori and Soi village. It started taking roots in adjacent villages very soon with the joining of hands by more and more people. All our Leaders, Officers/Officials, intellectuals, senior members, working people, PRI members, HGBs, GBs, youth, students and womenfolk of Leparada District and beyond are leading this social movement today. All the expenses of its activities are borne out of voluntary contribution of people especially government employees. Within 7 years of its movement, almost all area of Leparada district, adopted the philosophy of GRK. The good works done through GRK has now spread to other districts as well. Some of the works done collectively by our people under the aegis of GRK movement are listed here as under- 1. BAN ON FISHING: The ban on fishing was imposed indefinitely. This has led to huge increase of number of fishes and aquatic lives in our rivers. Additionally, 75000 fingerlings were also released in our rivers to increase the number of fishes. Today, we organize one day traditional fishing during BasCon Festival with tourist and villagers to earn revenue. 2. BAN ON HUNTING: The imposition of ban on any form of hunting initially for five years adopted in the year 2012 is still in force. Many animals and birds are now visible in our forests. 3.BAN ON PLASTIC: The plastics have been banned in villages. This has reduced plastic pollution and its hazards. 4. BAN ON GAMBLING: There is ban on any form of gambling such as playing cards, carrom, ludo, chess etc. within village jurisdiction. This has reduced loitering of people around without any productivity. 5. BAN ON IMFL: There is ban on use of Indian Made Foreign Liquors (IMFL) in any social functions to avoid intoxication and alcoholism, The crime rate and road accidents have reduced due to this. Also the workshops are conducted by Village Level Disciplinary Committee to check drug addiction and alcoholism Nee A WoRSwine 6.SANITATION: It is now compulsory to construct pigsty for maintaining cleanliness in our village. Social services are conducted regularly to clean the village area, The Hospital data confirmed that this has reduced infectious diseases among villagers 7. DISCOURAGING SOCIAL DIVIDE: The division of society on the basis of clan, title or region is discouraged to maintain social unity. 8. OPEN DEFECATION FREE: It is now compulsory to construct toilets in villages and discourage open defecation, Hundreds of toilets have been constructed long before SWACCH BHARAT ABHIYAN was launched by Govt, of India, Around 32 villages have been declared open. defecation free (ODF) now. 8. ORGANIC CULTIVATION: Encouraging youth to take agriculture and horticulture activities particularly organic cultivation as alternative employment. Several workshops and trainings have been conducted to impart knowledge on organic cultivation. 9. PARENT- TEACHER MEET: In order to improve the performance of Govt. schools, regular Parent-teachers meet in schools are encouraged. The toppers of schools are also rewarded as a token of encouragement. 10.GRK FOOTBALL ACADEMY: Encouraging games and sports is a very important agenda of GRK. AGRK FOOTBALL ACADEMY is running now in Basar with the help of volunteer donations. More than 30 talented young children are selected after rigorous test. Recently, two young students of this Academy have been selected by 1 Sangey Laden Sports School Itanagar for further study and coaching. 11, ENCOURAGING TOURISM: The villagers are encouraged to be part of growing tourism by keeping the villages clean and plantation of avenue trees and promoting ‘HOME STAY’ concept to augment the income. 12. BASAR CONFLUENCE FESTIVAL: In order to attract tourism, improve rural economy and showease the rich cultural aspects, an annual calendar event of BASAR CONFLUENCE or BasCon FESTIVAL is organised. Unlike any other festival, BasCon is a unique festival which is organised by the community. This year the BasCon 4.0 is being organised from 1* to 4* December, 2019 with the help of State Government. 13. RIVER CLEANING: The water is source of life. Therefore, it is very important to clean our water sources from any contaminations. The GRK is conducting river cleaning annually to spread awareness. 14. ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM: Renowned bloggers, poets, photographers, Painters and story writers are invited and hosted in Basar for a month to work on various aspects of lives of native people and share through social media, The idea is to document the culture, food, religion ete for posterity. This programme culminates on the eve of BasCon for wider publicity of their works, 15. BIRDING PROGRAM: Another program to preserve birds, the birding program has been also organised. Most of the parents are grateful to the Karyakartas of VKVAPT for their zeal and enthusiasm to create this healthy education environment for our children. The various success stories of VKVs are the result of the motto of working towards growing together, The framework laid down by VKVAPT has drawn innumerable well wishers and individu- als from every walks of life for a healthy growth of educational sector in the state. However there are still many issues that lay in our hand to work together to achieve further height. While re-collecting my association with VKV Chimpu, Itanagar, campus, my mind flashes. back at imminent threat of huge boulders to VKV Chimpu campus as per the unusual handwritten, circular from neighboring resident. On a rainy summer day in May, 2008, I received a call from one of the dedicated vacation In-charge of VK, Itanagar. He, with desperate and frantic voice, told me that they have got unusual information from a nearby resident, that VKV Chimpu, has threat of few huge boulders which were precariously hanging beside the retaining wall of KV No II, Itanagar and in between the road leading to Itanagar and Hollongi. This was the result of massive erosion caused by heavy downpour for several ULI By : TOKONG PERTIN days. Due to the incessant rain, at any moment the piles of huge boulders were likely to slip down and massive damage was assured to the school property. After the telephonic conversation with vacation In-charge of VKV Itanagar, [immediately rushed to VKV Itanagar Campus covering 6 kms distance and witnessed the most dangerous scene from the school Campus. I rang up the Director, Disaster Management (then Relief & Rehabilitation Dept) as well as the Deputy Director Disaster Management but neither help nor advice came from their side. Next, [rang up the then SP Papum Pare, Shri. It was before creation of SP Capital Complex, Itanagar. Both of us tried our best to coordinate with PWD to engage a JCB or Falkland to remove the precariously dangling huge stock of boulders just above the VKV Itanagar Campus. As a result of that endeavor sometime the full-fledged VKV School Support Group (SSG) came into being. This SSG works in a different manner compared to other School Management Groups found in many schools across our State. This group of VKV Itanagar’s well-wishers has been drawn from all walks of life with a motto to attend any call of the situation from VV on 24X7 hours. The SSG members work together with the school authority based on need of situation, We all help to ventilate the problems as per the need of school to higher authorities of the state and have succeeded in many such endeavors. The SSG and school authority sits in regular interval to discuss and ponder over the issues related to school welfare. From 2016-17 onward the SSG started functioning in a more organized and systematic manner, like felicitating achievers of school an- ually, s0 as to boost the morale of the students as well as VKV asa team, Though VKV Itanagar produces good result in class X and Class XII CBSE Board examination, but due to change of CCE to annual exam system, as amember of the SSG, we have witnessed, psychological impact on students as well as their parents. In real sense, under RTE no detention system was adopted and in Arunachal Pradesh, perhaps there has been some psychological damage to the tribal dominated state of ours. Here also the SSG’s services were roped in, and after thorough con- sultation and discussion, it was unanimously de- cided amongst _ others to invite some motiva- tional speakers and also to felicitate achievers of student’s community every year with much fanfare to boost the aspiration level of — stu- dents from the resources contributed generally by the SSG team. And the magic is that the school still produces the best result in CBSE Class X and Class XII board examination. Itis not an in- dividual feat, rather a contribution and combined effort of the students, teachers, school admin- istration, and the parents including the SSG team to keep the spirit alive for the motto to work together while growing together. Last year in 2018, Dr. Madhu Rani Teotia, IAS, Secretary, Education, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, the person behind structural changes in education system in Arunachal Pradesh, graced the function as the chief Guest to honor the young academic achievers of VKY, Itanagar. In addition to her motivational speech, she appre- ciated the SSG format of VKY, Itanagar Nee AAA Thus, if Hook back on my relation with VKY, it turns me nostalgic as my association with VKV started as a parent and now, Lam one of the active Member of the SSG. In all these years, I have witnessed many positive changes in this school ~ the quality of education, the methods of application of knowledge etc. A lot of things have changed but one thing that remained constant is the ideology of Swami Vivekananda, which is leading the students, the teachers and even the parents for their betterment. The students, the teachers, the parents including the SSG have collectively played an important role in bringing in the positive and qualitative changes. As I pen down my thoughts, I congratulate the teachers and the students for their ever inspiring success stories that are written in the history chapter of our state, and to uphold the name of this school. Weas a Support Group have and will always stand firm to provide all the help and support to this school for the children of tomorrow. India, from centuries has lived to the diversities of its people’s culture, religion, caste, race, land and it’s much looked upon for by the world Variation and beauty in the diversity is seen from Kashmir in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, and from Gujarat, in the west to Arunachal, in the East. Arunachal Pradesh, the Land of Dawnlit Mountains, is a beauty in just its name; digging in, one can dive in the river of amazement and wonders. ‘The landscape is of hilly track nested in the foothills of Himalayas, and endowed with wide topographical variations. Vegetation and wildlife, rivers and streams originating in the higher Himalayas have flowed down forming tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra which have nested many lives along its banks, making their own niches ‘There reside about more than 26 tribes and sub-tribes with their tribal culture, identity and ethnicity in wide varieties. One living here can't just only know the people here, the people's modesty and uniqueness but also the essence of the indigenous preserved cultures can be felt just, right. ‘The Monpas and Sherdukpens of Tawang and West Kameng districts followed the Mahayana Buddhism. The Apatanis, Galos, Mishmis, Nyishis, Tagins, Akas etc. who worship the Sun. Dr. Yadar Kabak and the Moon God, while Noctes, Wanchos and Khamptis follow basic Vaishnavism and Buddhism. Its feels good to know that people of different beliefs thrive together so well, and there is beauty in the differences. Also the Galos, Apatanis, Tagins and Adis are commonly known, as the Tani Clan in relevance to myth of having originated from the same forefather Abotani Again plunging deeper, you can know the various languages, which are mostly derived from, Tibeto — Burman language, with more than 50 dialects. But then also for the convenience of communication Hindi, Assamese and English are used profusely. What more fascinating is the way people have lived, in much proximity of their existence with the nature. People here are dependent on Mother Nature for everything, from the traditional handicrafts, fishing hunting tools and housing etc. So, eco- friendly growth and development is the only respite for the people which will continue to link people with the pristine nature Skills on handicrafts are passed down to generations. Government has also initiated small industries and training institutes for skill development of the craftsmen. This is a necessary step to keep going indigenously made styles of handicrafts. ~NEW oe ~<¥ eRSwas And now when it comes to the food habits of the people, basically the staple food is rice. And also people love taking the local made alcohol called Apong, made of fermented rice and millets. Along with this, dancing is always a part of their merry — making ceremonies; a group dance by the women mostly to the folk-lore songs and chants called Ponungs-ponu, Some chants are also meant for calling of deities, power of spirits and are about historical events, myths and hence these practices, songs and chants are important to be continued; to be practiced and encouraged. Thoom, cultivation is the prominent form of agriculture practiced across the state ¢ indigenous belief of particularly the Tani Clan is the Doni — Poloism, i.e. worship of Sun Moon, and also for the Idu Mishmi Tribe who worship their own Deities. Recently seen influence of Christianity across the state is a harmful element for the breakage of Indigenous belief, and a part of its own identity. In this regard, [really miss those moments lived in the VKVs of Nivedita Vihar and Itanagar, when we were taught about the richness and uniqueness of Arunachali Culture and Traditions by our teachers. The work done by Vivekananda Kendra to make this concept of ‘Growing Together’ come true is commendable. Arunachal despite being a heaven on earth, for a long time, the world has remained dark to a its richness because of the state’s remote location, but the scenario is changing and it is growing to be of blooming tourist interest. Summing up, itis known that Arunachal is a state of prosperity and heavenly abode; people here live in peace and harmony, despite the diversities. And then living here and knowing them is exactly what you see can be felt, the se~ renity, the taste of cultural richness, which is getting erased from most of the place of world. Though the people are evolving with the modern world development, but remaining rooted to its origin is its real essence and world has got to see this. And hence, with this what Arunachal Pradesh needs to embrace now is what it has and preserve the very same, that the world is losing at great pace; along with welcoming the developments and necessary changes. Government should have the department and all necessary ways initiated for the preservation of this inborn culture and identity. People should be educated and made aware of their own ethnicity and the importance. It is noteworthy to mention that VKVs are imparting Man — making and Nation - building education to the remotest parts of the state. It's always my prayer for the people and this, land that it must keep enchanting the people from. outside and thriving in this world, and the generations and generations of this land should get to see its own beauty. je author is an Alumnus of VKVs Nivedita Vihar and Itanagar. Ash ~<¥ OREWine Growing Together| Indigenous Culture Loss of culture is loss of identity- We need to know who we are because it makes a difference in who our future generation will be. Arunachal Pradesh; hidden in the northeastern region of India is a state that exudes a variety of colors in the form of different traditions and culture and is known as ‘Land of Rising Sun”. When we talk about the culture of Arunachal Pradesh it is truly varied in the sense that the state has 26 major tribes including sub-tribes, Every tribe has their own unique set of tradition and customs. Now, the question arises how do we grow our indigenous culture? How do we preserve it? Culture and its heritage reflect and shape values, beliefs and aspiration, thereby defining a person’s national identity. It is important to preserve our cultural heritage because it keeps our integrity as a person, But nowadays our society is not concerned with educating the youth, with our own culture and tradition which in turn encourages the influence of Western and other culture. The main purpose of rising awareness in our youth is that they are the future of the society who will pass on their cultural knowledge to theirnext generation. And also by visiting sacred shrine(Eg. Gamgi) for better understanding of religious culture and by promoting traditional festivals like Mopin, Solung, Nyokum, Dree ete. Learning Art and Crafts- We have our own unique handmade traditional craftsmanship like weaving (Gale), bamboo and cane crafts (hats, baskets, cane backpacks etc.), weapons, Sri. Linni Chisi omaments and also household activities. These are the unique yet very fragile and the skilled hereditary traits of Arunachal tradition that is usually passed on to the next generation. + To promote this art and craft we can further organize vocational classes for the youngsters during their vacations or if possible add such art and craft classes in their curriculum. + Parents may let their children spend holidays with their grandparents which will help them in better adaptation to the traditional way ofliving. So learning about the traditional culture is an important part of identity development. Knowing about our cultural heritage, background and our state( Arunachal Pradesh), being proud of our indigenous culture, knowing our language and cultural knowledge, understanding of connection to the family and the community, learning the stories of our forefathers, sense of belonging and pride, understanding of the culture ultimately describe oneself, We can achieve such cultural advancement in indigenous growth by implementing and promoting awareness programs with respect to indigenous culture. Learning traditional belief + First and foremost making our “mother tongue” as our priority by recommending the parents to use their own mother tongue with their children. So that the children could comprehend NORE AAA WING their traditional dialect for better interaction. + Also by introducing “Tani Lipi” as subject in academic system so that our next generation would benefit from our own indigenous script to promote and preserve our mother tongue (tribal language) which are on the verge of extinction. Learning about Religious tradition- We follow indigenous belief which has been systemized under the banner,”’Donyi-Polo”(Sun and Moon) ever since founded by “Daadi Bote Talom Rukbo”. No cultural intrusion performed on the local tradition to convince people that their original religion is less valuable should be encouraged. So, Arunachal Pradesh brimming with tremendous anthropological richness, is ahome to several groups of indigenous people. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve the richness of its indigenous culture from extinction and help it grow more efficiently. Ask yourself a question- WHERE DO WE BELONG TO...?? He was intelligent from his birth. Because of his bravery and intelligence, he became the leader of his friends. From the very young age, Swami Vivekananda known as Narendra was a very inquisitive. Because of his learning, he had a strong desire to meet God. At that time, the Brahma Samaj activities were carried out vigorously in Bengal. Narendra also became a part of the committee. Though Narendra asked many about God but nobody could quench his thirst. So he started wandering here and there in search of truth. At last, after meeting Ramakrishna Paramhansa, he learnt about the mystery of religion and God, After his father’s death, being the eldest son of the family, Narendra had to shoulder the responsibility of nurturing his family. As the family had no money left after the father’s death, it was a troublesome time for them. There were many times when Narendra did not even touch a morsel of food for days on end. ‘Atthe same time, Ramakrishna was diagnosed with throat cancer. When Narendra went to help him, he was overjoyed to see Narendra. Ramakrishna gave all his miraculous power to Narendra and heaved a sigh of relief. Later, Narendra also became a Sannyasi to obtain knowledge and to know the people of the country he embarked on a journey in Bharat. He saw the real plight of the people during his journey. In December 1892, he meditated for three days in Kanyakumari and hit upon a plan to rejuvenate India. He decided to go to America to address in the World Parliament of Religion. Vivekananda gave his first lecture on that day. Towards the afternoon his turn came, after so much of procrastination. Though initially nervous, he bowed to Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, and he felt he got new energy in his body; he felt someone or something else had occupied his body- “The Soul of India, the echo of the Rishis, the voice of Ramakrishna, the mouthpiece of the resurgent Time spirit”. Then began his speech with salutation, “Sisters and brothers of America!”. To these words he got a standing ovation from a crowd of seven thousand, which sted for two minutes. When silence was restored he began his address. He greeted the youngest of the nations on behalf of “the most ancient order of monks in the world, the Vedic order of sannyasins, a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance!” On 15th September, in his speech Vivekananda tried to explain the reason of disagreement between each other and different sects and religions, He told a story of a frog, which is popularly known as kuor bang. And in the story he told, a frog used to live in a well. It was born there and brought up there and it used to think his well was the biggest water land of the world. One day, a frog from a sea came to that well. When the frog from the sea told the frog of the well that sea is much bigger than that well, the frog of the well did not believe it and drove the frog of the sea away from his well. Vivekananda concluded- “That has been the difficulty all the while. I am a Hindu. I am sitting in my own little well and thinking that the whole world is my little well. The Christian sits in his little well and thinks the whole world is his well. The Muslim sits in his little well and thinks that is the whole world.” On 194 September, Vivekananda gave a short introduction of Hinduism and spoke on “The meaning of the Hindu religion”. He also talked about the 3 oldest religions of the world, namely Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and Judaism and their survival and the emergence of Christianity. He then went ahead and shared his knowledge of the Vedanta philosophy, the concept of god, soul and body in Hinduism. On 20 September, in this brief address Vivekananda made a “little criticism” and told, religion was not the most important need of Indians at that moment. He regretted for sending of Christian missionaries and trying to save the souls of Indians although poverty had been a much more important 1 Diter VKV Extay Whiting issue at that time. He concluded “Hinduism cannot live without Buddhism, nor Buddhism without Hinduism.” and showed how Buddhism is the fulfillment to Hinduism. Address at the Final Session (27 September 1893) This was Vivekananda’s final address at the Parliament of World’s religion. In his last speech he told that the Parliament had become an accomplished fact. He thanked the “noble souls” for organizing the Parliament which he felt “proved to the world that holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character”. On 12" January, 1863, the whole neighborhood rejoiced in the birth of the great legend. Blessed with the power of his father and serenity of his mother, small Narendra (as he was called in his childhood) was a warehouse of thoughts. Such was the curiosity that when he reached his college, he began searching for ‘God’. Before that, in instance where he showed the mass who he was. and for what he came on the Earth, Meeting Sri Ramakrishna was one of the turning points of his life. It was that time when Sri Ramakrishna became the path shower for Swamiji. It was then that he came to know about the true goal of his existence, which was to serve his country, to serve his Mother India. Then, surprisingly, the death of his guru came as another big turn in his life. The strong Swami Vivekananda could not bear the separation from his guru ‘Sisters and brothers of America’-this one sentence became a huge crowd appetizer. In the World Parliament of Religion, he began his speech with these words and there was thrill created within the audience and they gave him a long standing applause. From that time onwards, Swamiji’s fame has crossed all the boundaries, he became world famous ‘There was something burning him from inside, He took a deep breath and thought about his own countrymen, That time, financial condition of our country was not at all good. There were lot of people below poverty line, There was tears in his eyes when he thought about the situation of his countrymen, He decided to tour India. He walked on foot.
