“PRODUCT DESIGN OF GOODS AND SERVICES”

First of all, let just discuss Product decision the selection, definition, and design of
products. OBJECTIVE OF THE PRODUCT DECISION To develop and implement a product
strategy that meets the demands of the marketplace with a competitive advantage. Product
Selection is choosing the good or service to provide customers or clients. Product's life is
divided into 4 phases. These are the introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Product life
cycles may be a matter of a few hours (a newspaper), months (seasonal fashions), years (video
cassette tapes), or decades (Volkswagen Battle). LIFE CYCLE AND STRATEGY which is
Introductory phase. Products in this phase are still being "fine - tuned" for the market, as are
their production techniques. Growth Phase. Product design has begun to stabilize, and effective
forecasting of capacity requirements is necessary 3. Maturity Phase. By the time a product is
mature, competitors are established. So high volume, innovative production may be
appropriate. Improved cost control, reduction in options, and a paring down of the product line
may be effective or necessary for profitability and market share. Decline Phase. Management
may need to be ruthless with those products whose life cycle is at an end. PRODUCT-BY-VALUE
ANALYSIS, GENERATING NEW PRODUCTS. NEW PRODUCT OPPORTUNITIES.UNDERSTANDING
THE CUSTOMER, ECONOMIC CHANGE, SOCIOLOGICAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE,
TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE, POLITICAL/LEGAL CHANGE, IMPORTANCE OF NEW PRODUCTS,
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT STAGES ideas functional specification, design review, test market,
introduction, evaluation. 4 approaches for product development the traditional U.S approach,
Popular Approach, the best product development used in the U.S, Japanese approach.
MANUFACTURABILITY AND VALUE ENGINEERING. Manufacturability and value engineering may
produce benefits. These are, Reduced complexity of the product, Reduction of environment
impact, Additional standards of components, Improvement of functional aspect of the produce,
improve job design and job safety, improved main ability (serviceability) of the product, Rebuts
design. Benefits of CAD and CAM. Product Quality, Shorter Design Time, Production Cost
Reductions, Database Availability, New Range of Capabilities. ETHICS, ENVIRONMENTALLY-
FRIENDLY DESIGNS & SUSTAINABILITY. SYSTEMS AND LIFE CYCLE PERSPECTIVE. View products
from a “system perspective. Managers should consider the life cycle of a product. GOALS FOR
ETHICAL, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY DESIGNS.TIME BASED COMPETITION.EXTERNAL
STRATEGIES.DOCUMENT FOR PRODUCTION. Assembly drawing, Assembly chart, Route sheet,
Work order. TRANSITION TO PRODUCTION.
