Brief Profile

Dr. Nuzhat Parveen Khan is a Professor of Law and Dean, Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, New
Delhi. She joined Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia in 1992.

Shedid her B.Sc. in 1983 from Lucknow University, Lucknow and thereafter her LL.B. (1986) and LL.M.
(1988) from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Professor Khan did her Ph.D. from Jamia Millia Islamia
and was awarded publication grant by the Indian Council for Social Sciences Research, Ministry of
HRD for her Ph. D thesis.

She has worked on the project for Ministry of Women and Child Welfare, titled,‘A Study of
Discriminative and Derogatory Practices against Women by Khap Panchayats, Kangaroo Courts
and Shalishi Adalats in India: An Empirical Study in the States of Haryana, Rajasthan, Western
U.P. and West Bengal’. The project report was also presented before the Parliament of India in 2014
and was highly appreciated by one and all. She has undertaken various Research Projects sponsored
by National Commission for Women. She conducted various workshops on women related laws to
impart legal awareness among women sponsored by National Commission for Women. Prof. Khan
has contributed and presented modules on Jurimetrics for the UGC e-Pathshala Project at
graduate and post graduate level. She has also authored study materials for various universities
and colleges across the nation.

In recognition of her academic excellence, administrative abilities, leadership qualities and her active
participation in the development of legal education, she became the Professor of Law in the Faculty of
Law, JMI, at a very young age. Professor Nuzhat Parveen Khan has 28 years’ teaching experience to
her credit. She has been actively engaged in teaching, research, training and consultancy for over two
decades Professor Khan has a deep understanding of university administration ranging from policy
matters to day-to-day functioning.

Professor Khan’s research interests include Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Feminist and Juvenile
Law. She is a noted scholar and lecturer and has appeared as keynote speaker presenting her
research and inspirational messages locally, nationally, and internationally. Professor Khan was
invited to the Harvard University, Boston, USA where she delivered keynote address in the opening
ceremony of the 7th Academic International Conference on Interdisciplinary Legal Studies
2017.She also proposed faculty exchange programme between JMI and Harvard Law School, Harvard
University which was received well by the host institution.

Professor Khan has numerous publications and professional presentations. She is the author/co-
author of about 70 research paper and articles. She has to her credit twelve books as author/co-author
and many as editor/chairman/ convener of the working group. She is also member of Governing
Bodies, Academic Councils and Executive Councils of various leading universities of India. Many
students have obtained their Ph.D. under her guidance. Her other interests include innovation in legal
education, e-Learning and MOOCs.

Her insight in the subject is laced with erudite explanation and cited across the discipline of visceral
affinity. While Professor Khan is, at the core, a scholar, her work has also achieved remarkable
acceptance by practitioners across different fields. Besides her research worthiness, innovation in
module, curriculum and pedagogic renovation is the hallmark of her teaching calibre.

She has taken the charge of Dean, Faculty of Law, JMI on 17 th September 2016. Under her benign
guidance and leadership, Faculty of Law has been growing each day and added new feathers and
horizons in all the segments of legal and higher education. She has taken a series of innovative
measures including a blue print of Ph.D. synopsis, updating of syllabi in tune with changing socio-legal
environment, emphasis on field-based studies, promotion of inter-disciplinary teaching and
research.Under her dynamic and able leadership, the Faculty has organized more than 50
seminars/workshops/conferences and lectures.

During her tenure as the Dean of the Faculty, she initiated and introduced three new inter-disciplinary
programmes and career-oriented courses namelythe LL.M. (Executive) Programme, Post Graduate
Diploma in Labour Laws & Air and Space Laws.

LL.M. (Executive) Programme for legal professionals started from the year 2017 presents a unique
opportunity to specialize in the core topics of legal practice and to do so through a flexible structure that
accommodates the demands of professional life.

JMI’s Faculty of Law is one of few law faculties that offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Laws
(PGDLL) from the year 2018 to equip students/professionals with the knowledge and capacities
required to act as dispute resolution practitioners, including arbitrators, mediators and conciliators. As a
holistic occupationally directed programme, it will produce graduates ready to practice after undergoing
the basic practical exposure considered necessary by the industry.

The scientific and technological developments in the field of air and space are so rapid that they have
posed challenge to the legal fraternity. The constant increasing volume of disputes in the field of air and
space has also resulted in the manifold increase in the legal practitioners working in the field of air and
space in the developed countries like United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, Japan, France,
Australia etc. Keeping this in mind, the Post Graduate Diploma in Air and Space Laws(PGDASL)is a
unique initiative undertaken at Faculty of Law, JMI. The Course is designed to provide an in-depth
understanding of Air Law and Space Law along with some fundamental principles of public international
law related to air and space. The course is extremely useful to the candidates having wide-ranging
background from legal to scientific.

She is the key figure behind the generating funds for the institution with the introduction of Self-
Finance Undergraduate Program, Postgraduate Programs and two PG Diploma Programs in the
span of two year of her deanship. She took needful steps to update lecture halls fitted with LCD
Projectors, Moot Court Hall, Facility Area, Conference Rooms, upgraded library resources with Online
Legal Database like JSTOR, Hein online, Westlaw, Manupatra, Lexis Nexis & SCC, the installation of
CCTV cameras and enhancing the landscaping and lighting throughout the vicinity of the faculty,
Separate Common Rooms for Boys and Girls etc. It was her pioneering initiative to increase seat in
LL.M from 20 to 30 in the year 2018 and offering of core-sectoral specialization within Post-Graduate
curriculum.

Under her visionary leadership and mature guidance, the Faculty of Law, JMI Delhi has made great
strides in the academic, research and outreach sphere, emerging as a leader of legal and higher
education in India. In just a short span of 2 years she has steered Faculty of Law, JMI to the 6th best
Law School of India in the NIRF-2018 rankings. The Faculty of Law, JMI is placed at 1st position by
India Today Magazine in the issue of June 26, 2017.

Professor Nuzhat Parveen Khan shares a vision of promotion of quality-centric teaching and
research, and making legal education system in tune with the sustainable economic and social
development of the nation.
