Pre-Assessment for Science Unit

The pre-assessment for science was given on November 7th, 2019. The students used

the iPads to determine the correct answer in groups. 4-5 students sat at the kidney shaped

table with the teacher candidate. The teacher candidate read the questions aloud to the

students to assure their understanding. The students responded by selecting the response that

they thought to be correct. The results of the pre-assessment showed that the students have

grasped the basics of the subject matter. This information allowed me to provide more in-depth

lessons for the students to learn more about force and motion.

The pre-assessment showed that the students knew a lot about force and motion.

Though, the questions were to gain basic knowledge of students understanding. Pictures and a

read aloud of the questions were used to help students while taking the pre-assessment. It was

found that 13 out of 18 students were able to select the correct definition for force. 15 out of

18 students were able to select the correct definition for motion. 18 out of 18 students were

able to identify which person was using more force, by looking at the given photos. 13 out of 18

students were able to identify which can would roll down the hill to the bottom first. 18 out of

18 students were able to identify the item that was not magnetic. Student 1 was able to answer

4 out of 5 questions correctly. He struggled to identify the definition of a force. Student 2 was

able to answer 5 out of 5 questions correctly. This showed that the student has previous

knowledge of force and motion. Both students understand the basics of force and motion, and

will be able to move further to expand their knowledge during unit week.
