Filippo, Anna De. Italian and American Youth: Some Cultural Differences. 14 May 2018,

https://www.lifeinitaly.com/potpourri/italian-and-american-youth-some-cultural-

differences. Accessed 14 October 2019.

Anna De Filippo wrote this article in Potpourri on May 14, 2018. It’s called “Italian and

American Youth: Some Cultural Differences.” The main point of this article is to inform readers

about cultural patterns and the habits and customs between cultures and countries that overlaps,

specifically between American and Italy. This article talks about work, meeting places, free time,

and sports. Work is different for Italian teenagers than it is for American teenagers. Italian teens

don’t work odd jobs throughout high school and college like American teens. Meeting places for

Italian teens are usually on the streets of their cities or towns, which is not common in the United

States. They meet like this due to the configuration of their towns, where central piazzas and

areas were built around historical sites. The mall is one of the biggest meeting places for teens in

the United States. Both sets of teens do spend their free time similarly though by listening to

music, watching movies, hanging out, practicing sports, and surfing the internet. Italian schools

don’t have the time or facilities for sports in school but will often enroll in dance or swimming

on their own time. This is a lot different in the United States, where most schools have various

different sports year-round for the students.

The author’s purpose of writing this article is to show some of the differences between

teenagers in Italy and in the United States. The audience is for anyone wanting to know how

they’re different from each other. De Filippo is a translator and freelance writer in Italy, she

knows how teenagers work there, which helps show that she has the adequate information for the

article. She is from Italy and has written numerous articles. This article will help with my paper

by explaining how American teenagers are different from other teenagers in different countries

and why.

Holden, Martha. How Cultural Differences Affect Teenagers. N.d.

https://living.thebump.com/culture-, familydifferences-affect-teenagers-9246.html.

Accessed 21 October 2019.

Martha Holden wrote this article, called “How Cultural Differences Affect Teenagers” on

theBump, a website, it doesn’t have a publishing date though. Its main point is to explain why

teenagers act the way they do. It talks about how culture differences affect teenagers’ personal,

family, school, and social life, and if they understand cultural diversity, then they’ll be able to

better relate to people who think and act differently. Families that grew up in a different family

culture have to perform a balancing act with the American one. Many first-generation American

teenagers want to maintain their original culture, but usually do it at home and portray an

American one in public. School can be difficult if you practice more than one culture. It is the

place where teens experience the most cultural diversity and can suffer the effects of being

different. Different cultures have a variety of ways to learn and express themselves, and those

trying to adopt the American culture may have a hard time. Peer relationships and personal

image are both affected by cultural differences and make fitting in hard. Teenagers may try to
Savage 3

change themselves to fit in or be misunderstand because of how their body language is

interpreted in the American culture.

The purpose of this article is to show and explain how having different cultures and

moving somewhere different can make keeping their original culture difficult. The audience for

this article is for people who practice more than one culture. It was written from a non-biased

viewpoint, which made reading it and drawing conclusions easier. The writer is a professional

writer since 2002. She’s written articles on food, weddings, travel, human

resources/management, and parenting to numerous publications. She has a Bachelor of Science

in psychology from the University of Houston. These things show credibility and there is a list of

references at the end of the article that shows where she got her information from to write the

article. I’ll be able to use this in my paper to answer the question of how teens from other

countries have different cultures and what it’s like trying to adopt an American one.

Nutt, Amy. Street Directory. 2019,

https://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/49004/cars/is_the_legal_driving_age_the_s

ame_for_all_countries.html. Accessed 21 October 2019.

Amy Nutt wrote this article called “Is the Legal Driving Age the Same for All

Countries?” It was written in 2019 on StreetDirectory and its main point is to show the legal

driving ages in other countries. The legal driving age in the United States is 16, that is when one

can obtain a driver’s license. The rules to obtain one per state vary, some saying you need more

time driving with a licensed adult, and some saying you only need to have your permit for 30

days instead of 6 months. While 16 is the most common age in the United States to obtain a

driver’s license, it’s more common to have to be 18 in other countries. Some examples are

Canada, China, Russia, India, Japan, Europe, and Cyprus. New Zealand you only have to be 15
Savage 4

and only 14 in Ethiopia. The rules to obtain one differ from country to country but are

comparable since most ages to drive are 18.

The writer’s purpose in writing this article is to show different legal driving ages. The

audience is for teenagers wanting to get their license. It was updated in 2019, making the source

current and written on StreetDirectory, a site about legal driving. Amy Nutt is a Washington,

D.C. based journalist and New York Times bestselling author. She’s a graduate of Smith College

and Graduate School of Journalism. This shows credibility and reliability. The different driving

ages in different countries will show the amount of responsibility a teenager has and will help

show differences between teenagers in my paper.

Putnum, Samuel and Masha A. Gartstein. “How Different Cultures Shape Childrens’

Personalities in Different Ways.” Washington Post 12 January 2019,

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/how-different-cultures-shape-

Samuel Putnam and Masha A. Garstein wrote this article, “How Different Cultures Shape

Children’s Personalities in Different Ways”, on January 12, 2019 for the Washington Post. The

main point of this article is to show how different parenting style affect children’s personalities

and how where you’re from also certain behaviors are ingrained in certain cultures. For example,

Italians wildly gesticulate when they talk, Dutch children are more easygoing and less fussy, and

Russians rarely smile in public. Psychologists who were fascinated by these differences and

decided to study them. In the past two decades, these researchers have shown how culture shapes

personality. Psychologist Robert McCrae and his colleagues documented pronounced personality

differences of people living in different parts of the world and were able to trace some of the
Savage 5

differences to how children were/are parented. Findings of Dutch social psychologist Geert

Hofstede (1970s) correlated to the findings of current psychologists, which shows that cultural

values are relatively enduring and effect how kids develop over time.

The writer’s purpose for writing this article is to explain how different cultures and

different parenting affects children’s’ personalities. The audience is people who want to know

why certain people from certain places have different personalities from people from other

places, but similar to people they live around. Since the article was written this year, it makes

what was said in it, valid and current. With it being in the Washington Post, it makes it reliable.

The two authors are credible because they both have degrees and have written numerous things

that have been published. These two authors did their research for this article and had facts that

you can click on and it will take you to a link. I’ll be able to use this for my paper to explain why

teenagers in other countries act the way they do and how they’re different from American

teenagers.

The Savvy Backpacker. Women’s European Fashion- Tips for Dressing like a European. 12

September 2018, https://thesavvybackpacker.com/womens-european-fashion/. Accessed

21 October 2019.

The author isn’t listed for this source but does use first person when writing it. The

website that posted this article, called “Women’s European Fashion- Tips for Dressing like a

European”, is The Savvy Backpacker on September 12, 2018. The main point of this article is to

show how people, mainly females, in Europe dress, which you can compare to those living in the

United States. Females in Europe dress in clothes that fit well, and if something doesn’t fit,

they’ll get it tailored. They keep their wardrobe simple and classy, and will wear contrasting

pieces together, while adding a bright accessory. Jeans are a popular choice of bottoms, mostly
Savage 6

dark or grey, with a very small amount of distress. They keep their hair looking effortlessly

natural, but still classy. Females in Europe live in high heels and wedges, with a few pair of

boots, strappy sandals, and casual sneakers. Trench coats, cute bags, designer shades, and natural

makeup is popular as well. It’s unusual to see European women walking around in sweats or

running shoes, they’re always dressed elegantly and classy.

The purpose of this article is to explain and show the differences in ways of dress

between different places. The audience is anybody traveling to Europe or want to know how

European women dress and look. Since it’s on a page where there are numerous articles about

fashion in other countries with sources to back it up, and the fact that it was written recently,

makes it an affective piece of writing. The writer is a woman who lived in Europe for quite some

time and observed how European women dressed. She’s credible because she has references and

she spent time in Europe, observing, which makes the information she put in her article adequate

and reliable. I’ll use this source to show the differences in how female teenagers in the United

States dresses and how those in Europe dress.

Miaschi, John. “Drinking Ages Around the World” WorldAtlas, 7 January 2019,

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/drinking-ages-around-the-world.html. Accessed 14

October 19.

The author is John Miaschi and it was published on a site called WorldAtlas and it

updated yearly. The article is called “Drinking Ages Around the World” and the main point is to

inform readers how old they have to be to drink in certain places. The majority of countries have

a set MLDA (minimum legal drinking age) at 18 or 19 years old. The United States, except for

Puerto Rico and Virginia’s Island, and 19 other countries, especially Asian countries, have the

highest set MLDA. In some countries, alcohol is completely banned, like in Muslim countries.
Savage 7

Sixteen is considered the youngest drinking age, with at least eight countries and regions having

a set MLDA at 16 years. There are many regulations and laws behind MLDAs, one of which is

the effect alcohol has on the brain of adolescents.

The purpose of this article is to inform readers of the drinking ages and laws in different

countries. The audience is anybody that wants to know the age for drinking in other countries

besides their own. Since the information is updated every year is the age has changed on a world

atlas website, the information is more reliable and credible. The author is credible because he has

a bachelor’s degree from Moi University in agricultural economics and resource management

and has experience in agribusiness, banking, marketing, research, and project management. He’s

a self- employed freelance writer. The source is reliable because it can be checked and cross

referenced with other ones, where it’s found to be correct. The author has adequate information

for the article due to research. I can use this in my paper for the argumentative section on why

drinking laws are the way they are and the effects they have on the adolescent brain.

YouthRules! . State Laws. N.d. https://www.youthrules.gov/law-library/state-laws/index.htm.

Accessed 14 October 2019.

The U.S Department of Labor is the author and the name of the source, it’s updated every

year, and the main point of this website is to inform on state labor laws for minors. There are

numerous links that will take you to different information, such as state minimum wage rates and

state child labor laws. All the states in the United States have rules for the employment of young

workers and also have different minimum wage requirements depending on where you live. In

order to work if you are under 18 and still in school, some places require you to get a work

permit, where it will state how many hours and what day you can work. The wage you will be

receiving will sometimes be listed on it as well.

Savage 8

The purpose of this website is to inform people in the US, depending on where they live,

of the state laws for labor. The audience is anyone that wants or needs to know. Since it’s written

on an official website and reviewed by officials, the source is credible and the affects the source

has is positive. People are more informed about what they need to do in order to work in

whatever state that they live in. I’ll use this source to argue why teenagers the United States work

the way they do compared to other teenagers in different countries.
