in scope.

My Learning Activities___________________________________________________

Interview people from different schools in various disciplines and levels.

Activity 1
Get their opinions on the meaning of curriculum.

Note: Mr. Mapue, Mr Ramacho and Mr. Villacaol prefer to have an interview rather than
write their answers on the questionnaire. Voice recorder was then used to document their
answers and transcribe below.

Name(s) Designation Meaning

Mr. Luisito B. Mapue Principal, Piapi High School Quarterly we are given
competencies to follow that are
why we have the budget of
work. And we cannot avoid that
in some instance there will be
activities that will affect the
schedule to meet that specific
competencies therefore what we
do, if some competencies are
related like two or three we will
fuse that so that we can still be
able to meet the target
competencies that we need to
teach to our student in a given
timeframe. So basically,
competency-based curriculum is
really important for us teachers
to give emphasis on the outcome
of the learning process that we
are targeting and meet it until
the end of the school year. In
essence, curriculum is one that
focuses upon what learners are
expected to carry out rather
than on what they are expected
to know.

Mr. Highwell Merced Grade 10- MAPEH, Piapi Curriculum is very important to
Ramacho High School the academe because one
cannot exist without it. Just like
our country, it is abided by the
Phil Constitution and we can
relate that to the educational
system of the Philippines
regarding the curriculum. Several
years ago, DepEd adapted the
K12 curriculum and all basic
education offering schools are
actually observing this where
there is one yr for kinder, 6 years
in elementary, 4 yrs in junior
high and 2 yrs for senior high.
Although it may differ depending
on subject or discipline, in every
curriculum there are
competencies that the teacher
and students must coincide to
meet that objective of the
course or description, in some
cases we are given budget of
work where in we are guided like
this topic will just be one hour
discussion and one hour field
and some are two hours lecture,
it depends and we are following
that. We are actually bless
enough that our supervisor
assigned to our subject are gave
us the luxury of budget of work
because by then if there are no
discrepancies, we are going to
meet the learning competencies.

Mr. Alvin E. Villacaol Grade 7-English,Piapi High By definition, curriculum refer to

School the system of instruction,
assessment, grading, and
academic reporting that are
based on students
demonstrating that they are
expected to learn as they
progress through their
education. As the definition
suggests, the curriculum covers
the learning goals and objectives
reflecting some breadth and
balance, while the textbooks
adopted recommends the
teaching approach that explains
the objectives and provides
activities and assessment tools
that are compatible with this
approach.
Visit the school library/surf the internet or consult the
Activity 2 dictionary. Write two meanings of curriculum taken from
authoritative sources.

Meaning of Curriculum Reference(s)

1. In the early years of 20th century, the Curriculum Inquiry, volume 8, number 1 (1978):
traditional concepts held of the “curriculum is Blackwell Publishers p. 66–72.
that it is a body of subjects or subject matter
prepared by the teachers for the students to
learn”. It was synonymous to the “course of
study” and “syllabus” Robert M. Hutchins
views curriculum as “permanent studies”
where the rule of grammar, reading, rhetoric
and logic and mathematics for basic education
are emphasized.

On the other hand, to a progressivist, a listing

of school, subjects, syllabi, course of study,
and list of courses or specific discipline do not
make a curriculum. These can only be called
curriculum if the written materials are
actualized by the learner. Broadly speaking,
curriculum is defined as the total learning
experiences of the individual.

2. The term curriculum refers to the lessons

and academic content taught in a school or in a https://www.edglossary.org/curriculum/
specific course or program. In
dictionaries, curriculum is often defined as the
courses offered by a school, but it is rarely
used in such a general sense in
schools. Depending on how broadly educators
define or employ the term, curriculum typically
refers to the knowledge and skills students are
expected to learn, which includes the learning
standards or learning objectives they are
expected to meet; the units and lessons that
teachers teach; the assignments and projects
given to students; the books, materials, videos,
presentations, and readings used in a course;
and the tests, assessments, and other methods
used to evaluate student learning. An
individual teacher’s curriculum, for example,
would be the specific learning standards,
lessons, assignments, and materials used to
organize and teach a particular course.
MY ANALYSIS

Curriculum is the whole learning experiences or skills or competencies given

to students, so that school can provide competent graduates. It is a set of instruction,
assessment, grading, and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating
that they have acquire the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress
through education but it is important to have this acquisition be display in one setting, not
in each on or isolation. That is why, it is important to have the right approach, methods
and technique in teaching-learning to ensure that what is planned in the curriculum is also
practiced. I sincerely salute the teachers in Piapi High School for not just religiously
following the curriculum but also for going extra mile of what is expected from them. I
admire the Principal, Mr. Mapue for supervising well the entire faculty of the school.

Evolve your own definition of curriculum. Consider all the

Activity 3 meanings you have taken from the different sources and from
authoritative sources.

What is Curriculum?

In brief, curriculum encompasses the what, how, and why of learned material. This
necessitates often the multi-blended pedagogies with corresponding complex learning objectives.

How did I feel after the activities?

I feel confident after I did the interview for I learn so many insights about what
curriculum is coming from those who have been part of the curriculum. It’s a total different
experience having the interview with Mr. Mapue, Mr. Ramacho and Mr Villacaoel for they
share so much about the curriculum. It is not enough that you have the full knowledge of what
curriculum is but you must also have the right strategies in implementing it for the
comprehension the students. And I salute them for going extra mile of what is only expected
from them. For an instance that the student is having a hard time understanding a particular
lesson to hit that specific competency, they provide remedial classes which are free. I even
provide their technique in which those who are fast learner can help the slow learner. The y pair
them up so that those smart can teach and share their understanding to those who are having a
hard time understanding the lesson, it like a tutorial program and of course they provide extra
points for those who are helping. So basically, to follow the curriculum and meet the desire
competencies in the curriculum it is both work of the teacher and students and not the teacher
alone.
My Reflection /Insights________________________________________________

Why is curriculum important?

Curriculum is important for it is define as the heart of institution. It helps the teachers to
deliver the quality education. It is the main instrument for all around development
students/learners thought the different competencies it have that would target the physical, social,
emotional and intellectual aspect of the learner. Without it, the aims of education might be
unstable for curriculum is the center of all educative process. Therefore, without curriculum, we
are direction less. That is how important curriculum is.

How can one enrich the curriculum in every school?

To improve the curriculum of every school, the school head must have a clear vision for
his teachers and the school as well. He needs to know, on what are the things need to improve in
order to meet the standard of a good curriculum. I depends on the school head on how he will
handle the school curriculum, and it’s about his knowledge and skills in order enrich the
curriculum. That is why , I really admire Mr. Mapue for coming up with good method, approach
and technique in delivering the curriculum in Piapi High School and of course the whole faculty
for having same vision and belief with Mr.Mapue.
