Curriculum planning and model of teaching enabled me to visualize the teaching from the

perspective of the teacher. Seven steps of the model of teaching, the necessity to consider

content, learner needs, and society needs, and practically learning how to make lesson plans gave

me a more clear perspective of teaching. Teaching seems challenging in terms of multi-tasking.

There are a lot of things to consider when planning and more things to consider and take care of

in actual teaching, and more things to consider and reflect after teaching. It seems like teaching is

a very challenging profession, but I think it is very rewarding at the same time to see students

grow physically, intellectually, and psychologically. Thank to this course, especially to lesson

planning, curriculum planning, and model of teaching topics that I could visualize the teaching.

The need of the society and students are the two of the essential issues for curriculum and

instruction planning. Considering society’s needs is very important. First of all, education is one

of the six sociological institutions. It shows that education is influential in our society and among

individuals. Societies have certain norms and values. They have certain needs. Education is one

of the best ways of transmitting social norms and values and a way to fill certain needs of the

societies since the education of the next generation is intimately connected with the future of the

society. Knowing the society’s needs and integrating that need into education and instruction to

complement society is essential. The need of students is very important as well. Children and

teenagers have the desire to learn. They have needs in their learning. However, this need is not

always desired by students. Thus, there are subjects that students are interested in and are not

interested in. Although students do not want to learn or study specific subjects, it is the teachers’

responsibility to consider and think about students’ needs and plan curriculum and instruction.
Learning to plan curriculum and instruction is an essential skill for English teachers because of

several reasons. First of all, time management in a classroom is necessary for effective teaching.

Detailed curriculum and instruction planning will help teachers visualize how the class is going

to proceed. It will help the teacher to see the practical timetable. Then after class, the planned

curriculum and instruction will let the teacher know what to eliminate, what to fix, and what to

continue to do for effective time management. Also, content-wise, planning with details,

preparing course materials and sources according to the plan, applying the plan in the classroom,

reflecting, and applying feedback will improve the teaching and consequently improve the

learning of students. Thus, for effective time management and raising teachers’ teaching and

students’ learning to full potential, curriculum and instruction planning is essential.

When I plan the lesson, I want to consider the interpersonal domain and would consider a

student’s psychology. In all my classes that I had in my whole life, I have felt that the connection

between teacher and students and inclusiveness in the classroom affects students’ achievements.

I remember that I loved going to school more when I loved my teacher and my friends around

me. I believe personal relationship in the classroom affects academic performance, especially for

younger students like elementary school students. “Going Gangnam following your friend” is a

famous Korean proverb. It means a person gets to do something when his/her friends do. I

believe the peer environment and personal engagement with the teacher are intimately related to

students’ academic achievement. So if I were to plan my lesson, I would like to consider the

interpersonal domain of learning and student’s psychology.

When instructing, I think I should be careful in distinguishing negative reinforcement and

negative comments as a reaction to student’s thoughts or behavior. According to behaviorism, I

agree that negative reinforcement will help students to understand which behaviors are not

desired. However, when students are presenting their thoughts, I should never react nor comment

negatively on students as long as they are morally correct. I remember that I was very despaired

when my teacher from my elementary school commented to my future dream negatively. It

wasn’t a negative reinforcement to my undesired behavior, but it was a criticism of my thought

about my future job planning. I think my teacher commented that way because the job that I

presented was not an excellent job according to the view of society. However, I think I shouldn’t

do it in such a way. I should avoid being negative to students’ thoughts or behaviors unless it is a

negative reinforcement.
