Should internet access become a human right?
For better or worse, the internet has completely transformed the way in which the human being
communicates. The network, and platforms such as Twitter or Facebook, have not only helped
society to have all the information in the world just one click away, but have also influenced when
it comes to guaranteeing the freedom and security of people, especially those who live in
developing countries.

That is, at least, the conclusion reached by Dr. Merten Reglitz, Professor of Ethics at the University
of Birmingham, who advocates for internet access to be recognized as a human right. "Internet
access is not a luxury, but a human right, and everyone should have access to this global medium
without supervision and without censorship, provided free of charge to those who cannot afford
it," says the researcher in a recent published study. in the specialized medium "Journal of Applied
Philosophy".

Reglitz maintains his thesis on the importance of the network in guaranteeing freedom of
expression and the right to information. In this regard, the doctor highlights the role he has played
as a means through which to raise awareness about problems such as sexual harassment. Also as a
mechanism to show the world those acts that violate human rights. Something that the researcher
at the University of Birmingham agrees with other experts. «Nowadays without internet you can't
do anything. It is very difficult to get in touch with the administration or communicate with others.
It is also essential when accessing information, whether journalistic or cultural. Without a doubt, it
contributes a lot when it comes to guaranteeing freedom of expression, ”Ofelia Tejerina, president
of the Association of Internet Users, tells ABC.

However, Tejerina disagrees with Reglitz that internet access should be considered a human right.
On the contrary, he believes that it should be included as a social right, such as access to decent
housing or a job. The same goes for the expert in social impact of technology and director of the
Ethics company, Gemma Galdón: «Connectivity is very important. For example, when it comes to
finding a job it is essential. Turning internet access into a right is a debate we must have. We may
not be able to guarantee that it is free for everyone, but we must work to facilitate its use and turn
it into a public service ».

Despite the fact that the internet is increasingly being implemented globally, it is still far from
being accessible to everyone. According to the latest Global Digital study, conducted by the
Hootsuite and We Are Social companies, 57 percent of the global population already uses the
Internet as usual. Europe, with about 80 percent implementation, is in the lead. However, in other
continents such as Asia (44 percent) or Africa (21 percent), there is still a lot of work to do.
