LITERARY ELEMENTS
TWO
This worksheet covers the five main elements of a story – plot, characters, setting, conflict and
theme. Students can either complete this worksheet when analyzing a literary work, or when
planning their own writing.
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE: I find that this works well as a paired work activity when studying a
novel or short story. However, I also find that it works well if enlarged to A2 size, and filled in as a
group activity (and then displayed with other work on the novel).
This worksheet guides students through analyzing the narrative perspective of a piece of writing.
It could be used to help students deeper their understanding of the effect of the narrator in a
piece of literature, or to help students think through their own choice of narrator when writing.
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE: At any time when studying a piece of literature, I use this worksheet to
help students focus on analyzing the narrator. This could be done individually or in pairs.
This graphic organizer serves two purposes: Students can use it to plan their own plot structures
when writing a story, or it can be used to guide analysis of the plot structure of a piece of
literature.
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE: As this worksheet really helps students to think deeply about the
various elements of plot structure, I often give it to students and instruct them to fill it in about
one of their favorite films – this helps solidify their understanding of the elements involved.
This worksheet is the barebones of a mind map. Students have to make notes on this page,
adding to the branches, and extending it. This worksheet can be used either for planning a
setting for writing, or for analysis of a setting in a literary work.
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE: As this page works for both writing stories, and for literary analysis, the
use will differ. However, I generally use it as an individual activity. Although, I must add that it
works well if enlarged to A2 or A1 size, and filled in as a group-work task.
