Content of Lecture # 3

 Introduction to Center Line Method

 General Consideration in Center Line Method

 Example #1 & 2 on “Center Line Method”

3 Engr. Shad Muhammad

Centre Line Method

 In this method sum – total length of centre lines of walls, long and
short has to be found out.

 Find the total length of centre lines of walls, of same type, long and
short wall having same type of foundation and footing.

 Then find the quantities by multiplying the total centre length by the
respective breadth and the height.

4 Engr. Shad Muhammad

Length and Special Considerations
 In this method the length will remain the same for;

 Excavation in foundation

 For concrete in foundation

 For all footings

 For superstructure

 Slight differences will occur when there are cross walls or number of junctions.

 This method is quick but requires special attention and consideration at the

junctions, meeting points of partitions or cross walls

5 Engr. Shad Muhammad

Special Consideration

 For rectangular, circular polygonal (hexagonal, octagonal etc.) building having no

inter or cross walls, this method is quite simple.

 For buildings having cross or partition walls, for every junction of partition or cross

wall with the main walls special consideration shall be made to find the correct
quantity.
Special Consideration

Junction or Cross wall

6 Engr. Shad Muhammad

Deduction At Junction
 For each junction half breadth of the respective item or footing is to be
deducted from the total centre length.
Example:
In case of one partition wall or cross wall having two junctions, for earth work in
foundation trench and foundation concrete deduct one breadth of trench or
concrete from the total center length.
 Half breadth for one junction and one breadth for two junction. (2 × ½ =
one breadth).
 For footing similarly deduct one breadth of footing for two junctions from
the total centre length, and so on.

7 Engr. Shad Muhammad

-½ breadth 1st junction

Cross wall

-½ breadth
2nd junction

Different Types Of Walls

 For building having different types of wall, each set of wall shall have
to be dealt separately.

 Find the total centre length of walls of one type and proceed in the
same manner as mentioned earlier.

 Similarly, find the total centre length of walls of second type and deal
this separately and so on.

Example # 1; Corners Of The Building

 It may be noted that at corners of the building where two walls are

meeting no subtraction or addition is required.

Example # 1

Total centre length of walls = AB + BC + CD + DA

= 5.30 + 4.30 + 5.30 + 4.30
=19.20 m

 If the total centre length is multiplied by the breadth and the depth we

get the quantity of earth work in excavation.

Example # 2 (Wall with Standard Modular Bricks):

Estimate by “Center Line Method” the quantities of the following items of

a single room building from the given plan, section & general
specifications. (Fig.1)

General Specifications:
1. Earthwork in excavation in foundation

2. Concrete in foundation

3. Brickwork in foundation and plinth

4. Brickwork in superstructure

Example # 3 (Wall with Standard Modular Bricks):

Estimate by “Center Line Method” the quantities of the following items of

a two roomed building from the given plan, section & general
specifications. (Fig.2)

General Specifications:
1. Earthwork in excavation in foundation

2. Lime Concrete in foundation

3. 1st Class Brickwork in cement mortar 1:6 in foundation and plinth

4. 2.5 cm c.c Damp Proof Course

5. 1st Class Brickwork in superstructure

Example # 3 (Wall with Standard Modular Bricks):

Total Center length of wall = 2 * c/c Length of long wall + 3* c/c length of short wall
= 2 * 10.60 + 3 * 6.30 = 40.10 m

Example # 3 (Wall with Standard Modular Bricks):

1. Doors D-1.20 m * 2.10 m

2. Windows W-1.00 m * 1.50 m
3. Shelves S-1.00 m * 1.50 m
1. All walls are of same section.
2. Lintels over doors.
3. Windows & shelves are 15 cm thick R.B
