Family Centre. Family and friends were invited to take part in the touching tribute to recognize a great player who was tragically murdered earlier this year.

The Town of Strathmore and Siksika Nation are moving for-
ward on building relationships and understanding.
On Nov. 15, representatives from the town and Siksika met
at Blackfoot Crossing to sign a memorandum of understand-
ing (MOU). The MOU has been under development for several
months.
Talks between Strathmore town council and Siksika Nation
council began eight months ago, after the tragic death of Kris-
tian Ayoungman brought grief to both communities. Through the
oft-mentioned strength of Kristian’s mothers, Melody and Louise,
it also offered an opportunity to heal – together.
“We had a vigil (for Kristian) at Kinsmen Park and it was great
to see the communities come together,” Ruben (Buck) Breaker
told the audience during the signing ceremony. “Mayor Pat Fule
and Denise Peterson were there, and we said, let’s meet and ad-
dress the racism so we don’t have incidents like that again. A
week later, we came together, and the talks started.
“We are working on a strategic plan that makes the commitment
between both communities and governments so our communities
can live together without fear,” added Breaker.
Fule and Strathmore town councillors Peterson, Bob Sobol and
Jason Montgomery were all in attendance for the signing.
“It was a tragic event that took place,” Fule said. “It was the
impetus to start working together.
“We want to improve the situation when our neighbours come
to Strathmore. When people said they had fear coming into our
town, I thought the last thing I would want is people visiting us to
be afraid; we want them to feel accepted and comfortable.”
Peterson, who gave thanks for having been welcomed on Siksi-
ka for many years, also thanked Kristian’s family and the Siksika
elders for their many sacrifices. “I, like Mayor Fule, agree that it
was the right people in the right place at the right time,” Peterson
said. “I want to make the assurance that the signing today will
have the staying power; like Crowfoot’s signing of Treaty 7.”

While I know the national election result wasn’t
what many of us were hoping for, my Conserva-
tive colleagues and I are ready to push harder than
ever for the priorities that matter to you.
Before I get into what we have been doing so
far to prepare for this new minority parliament, I
want to pay homage to our Canadian veterans. Re-
membrance Day just passed, and I was honoured
to attend ceremonies across our riding. Veterans
deserve our thanks not just on Remembrance Day,
but every day. Whether during war or peacetime,
members of the Canadian Armed Forces have al-
ways stood ready to defend freedom, democracy
and justice. Let us never forget.
With respect to what’s happening on Parliament
Hill, we called on Trudeau to immediately recall
Parliament to deal with four pressing policy areas:

Hello Strathmore! It has been an amazing week
visiting with so many of you during the constitu-
ency week. I hope that you were able to get down-
town for the Christmas Downtown shopping event.
The inspiration for this was Strathmore Florist’s
Brian and Linda Code who have held a Christmas
Open House every year for 38 years. This year Lin-
da baked over 4,000 cookies. The merchants told
me the store traffic was amazing and people were
very impressed by the special deals they offered.
When you shop local you get unique items, great
service, and you support the local community.
We are changing the eligibility criteria for Drug
Coverage for Seniors. If you and your spouse are
both 65 or older, you are both eligible for the plan.
Family members younger than 65 years of age will
no longer be covered by Coverage for Seniors. We
have been exploring options regarding income
testing for Coverage for Seniors. In the meantime,
government-sponsored drug coverage for seniors
will continue to be the same. As more details
come, we will keep you posted. The changes to
the coverage for dependents will take effect later
this fiscal year. Senior spouse/partners and depen-
dents will continue to have coverage under the
new plan.
The main reasons for the changes are that the
plan cost $600 million last year and that cost is
expected to grow by eight per cent this year. We
need to ensure sustainability of the program. If
your spouse/partner and/or dependent is under
the age of 65, they will no longer be eligible for
coverage under Coverage for Seniors after the
change takes effect. If they require extended cov-
erage, they may want to consider options such as
the government sponsored Non-Group Coverage
Plan. We are amending the Health Insurance Pre-
miums Regulation and the Blue Cross Agreement
Regulation to enable the change. You can reach
the AHCIP Office by phoning 780-427-1432 (toll
free in Alberta by first dialing 310-0000).

Premier Kenney’s Fair Deal Panel will be holding
meetings throughout Alberta to explore options
for Alberta to ensure our interests are protected
within Canada. The Fair Deal Panel will consist of
Honourable Preston Manning PC CC AOE, Stephen
Lougheed, Oryssia Lennie CM, Jason Goodstriker,
Donna Kennedy-Glans QC, Moin Yahya PhD JD,
Drew Barnes MLA, Miranda Rosin MLA and Tany
Yao MLA.
The panel will consult with experts, hold open
town hall meetings across the province and under-
take research to inform their recommendations. All
Albertans will be given an opportunity to provide
input through online surveys, and other forms of
direct feedback, both digital and traditional. The
panel will seek to conduct its public consultations
between Nov. 16 and Jan. 30, 2020 and complete
its report to the government by March 31, 2020.
You may have heard the dismissive statements
by the Leader of the Bloc Quebecois that he has
no interest in helping us get our resources to tide-
water even while happily accepting the billions
of dollars that Alberta contributes to Canada. As
Premier Kenney said: “pick a lane.” Options that
will be considered include setting up our own Al-
berta Pension Plan. Experts agree that should we
do so we could offer the same benefits with lower
premiums or perhaps offer improved benefits if
premiums remained the same. This is well within
our authority and Quebec has operated its own
pension plan for the last 60 years. Another option
is more control over immigration, again something
Quebec has. We want to hear from you and stay
tuned for a meeting near you or other options to
make your voice heard. The panel’s mandate can
be found on Alberta.ca.

Despite playing a solid weekend of hockey, the Wheatland

Kings could only muster two out of a possible four points.
The local junior B team defeated High River 3-2 in a shoot-
out on Nov. 16 at the Strathmore Family Centre, before fall-
ing 4-2 to the Cochrane Generals the following day at the
same venue.
“It was a good 60 minutes of hockey,” said coach Joel Rob-
inson after the game versus Cochrane. “It’s unfortunate that
we didn’t get the two points, but I thought it was a good
hockey game. You take away those two power play goals,
five-on-five it was an even game across the board. It’s good

“As a coaching staff we’re happy and we have to build off
of it – I know it’s a loss, but you have to build on a big two-
game weekend.”
According to Robinson, the two low-scoring, physical
games are something the team will have to get comfortable
with as they gear up for the playoffs.
“I keep telling the guys that, too – these kind of games
against Coaldale and Cochrane, I mean this could be a first
round match up for us,” said the coach. “We want to have
that intensity, we want the boys to be in a good mindset

The Kings opened the weekend with the beautiful retire-
ment ceremony for Kristian Ayoungman prior to their game
versus High River. The former Kings player was murdered
earlier this year and the team invited his family and friends
to take part in the touching tribute.
After the emotional boost from the ceremony, the Kings
jumped on the board first.
“It was another playoff style game – back and forth, we

The Kings will now hit the road to take on the High River

Elite competitor goes the distance

to be an amateur in the matter of physi-
cal training. It is a shame for a man to
grow old without seeing the beauty and
strength of which his body is capable.”
What lures Sonya (Hein) Elias to run
at 4 a.m., finish a 61-kilometre (km) ob-
stacle course, endure massive physical
and mental conditions, steep technical
terrain, climbing ropes, walls, axe or
spear throwing, or carrying a 40-pound
sandbag while running to the next ob-
stacle?
When asked what inspires her, Elias
doesn’t hesitate. “My Dad, Gerald Hein,
is my inspiration.
“He has Parkinson’s, dementia, spinal
issues and now resides in a long-term
care facility. Like him, one day all of our
choices can be taken away,” said Elias.
“Still, dad’s the strongest person I know.
He gets up every day and just keeps
putting one foot in front of the other.”
Hein’s past struggles with sexuality
and coming out in the ’80s, with ac-
ceptance and self-worth, although ter-
rifying for him, has paved the way for
others.
“He has shown me what I want in life.
We need to give ourselves more value,
more self-worth, more courage. I want
to seize the day,” said Elias.
“Totally ordinary” is how Elias de-
scribes herself. Yet, she is a tenacious,
resilient, elite Spartan obstacle course
competitor who “loves challenges and
running in the mountains.”
Raised in the Hussar area and living
for the past two decades with her hus-
band and family near Rosebud, she val-
ues human connection, community and
social responsibility.

“A big part of the racing community
is supporting each other,” she said. “I
get to see strong women all the time.
I have the best group of friends in this
racing community. It’s a real family.”
Elias has always been active. She
currently trains with OCRLabs Perfor-
mance under coach Chad Budyk – a
“mad genius”.
“We are a super tight group of racers
now,” said Elias. “It has been a privilege
for all of us. These X warrior events are
pretty respectful towards women. A lot
of the weights are the same as men and
they expect a lot out of us.”
Yet despite her endurance, her body
is regularly bruised by the obstacles.
Elias qualified for Spartan Worlds in
2017. Sporting a broken finger in the 26
km world event, she did 170 burpees
and 4,000 metres of elevation. Windy
and cold, Spartan “made us swim in a
snow-making pond and do a full head
dunk under a wall. I wanted to quit but
that wasn’t an option. I cried at the fin-
ish line. What an honour to be at that
venue and racing with all of the women
I look up to.”
This year’s events included a 50 km
Grizzly Ultramarathon and six-hour X
Warrior Hurt Locker, winning both in
the female team division, plus a six-
hour Calgary Titan and multiple Spar-
tan races.
“At this age, racing gives me a foun-
tain of youth and a bit of control over
my life,” said Elias. “It is empowering.
I can carry a ton of groceries, I can lift
heavy things, I can do things. I don’t
buy into the notion that as women age,
they should have a certain ability. With
age, you have the wisdom and perspec-
tive that you didn’t have before. I in-
tend to be some eccentric old lady in
the gym with some crazy stories to tell.”

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks lost
in the first round of the playoffs to Prai-
rie Christian Academy, after coming sec-
ond in their pool at zones at Strathcona
Tweedsmuir School this past weekend.
“I was very happy with the team’s
performance at zones,” said coach Josh
Jalbert. “It was the hardest and best I
saw the team play all year. They were
taking big swings on their attacks, set-
ting up big blocks and scrambling on
defence. The one thing that let us down
was inconsistent passing on serve re-
ceive.”
The weekend got off to a rough start
with the Hawks losing tie-breaking sets
to both Our Lady of the Snows from
Canmore and St. Joseph’s Collegiate
from Brooks, on Nov. 15.
Saturday morning, they turned things
around, defeating Sundre High School
25-23 and 25-14, before downing Banff
Community High School in straight sets
25-23 and 25-14 which allowed them to
place second in the pool.
“I think we had the opportunity to
win each of our round robin games and
finish first in our pool, but instead we
finished second which gave us a play-
off match against PCA (Prairie Christian
Academy),” said Jalbert. “I believe PCA
was probably the toughest team that we
had played in the tournament.”
The match was close, with the Hawks
losing in straight sets, 27-25 and 26-24.
“It was hard going out of zones like
that, but I’m proud of how the boys
played,” said Jalbert.

Soren Lassen Nielsen passed away
peacefully at the Drumheller Health
Centre at 95 years old. He leaves to mourn son, Eric,
his wife Sherri, their children Owen, Reed, Spencer
and Leeza of Drumheller; son, Melvin, his wife Wendy,
their children Brad and Steven of Hussar; sister Frida
and husband Keith of Calgary along with two sisters
still in Denmark. Also survived by many nieces and
nephews in Canada and Denmark. Soren was prede-
ceased by his loving wife, Cecilia of 59 years, brother
Carl of Calgary and sister Magda Agerskov of Cluny.
Funeral services were held at Our Saviours Commu-
nity Lutheran Church in Hussar, Alberta on Monday,
November 18th, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Pastor Dan Hen-
drickson officiating. Interment was held in Bassano
Cemetery. In memory of Soren, if friends desire, me-

Michael René Frederick, beloved husband of Cindy
Frederick (née Pedersen) of Calgary, passed away on
Saturday, November 9, 2019 at the age of 63 years.
René made his way into the world on August 1, 1956
at the Calgary General Hospital, the first of five chil-
dren born to Pat and Bill. Then it was home to the
family farm, near Nightingale. He graduated from
Samuel Crowther High School where he knew grades
were important, yet sports and friends were his prior-
ity. Summers were spent working on the railway and
in the winter, he attended the University of Alberta,
where he obtained his B.A. in Political Science. The
decision to attend Mount Royal College greatly im-
pacted his future. Frequent coffees with a certain girl
eventually led to marriage while his diploma in Land
Administration helped kick-start a thirty-year career
in Natural Gas Marketing. René married Cindy Peder-
sen to the delight of his sister Suzanne. He once de-
scribed their life as a roller coaster ride that he would
not have missed for the world. The early years were
filled with football, broomball, and baseball tourna-
ments, with René as an active participant. As the
family grew, his passion turned to coach and men-
tor where he taught his kids the skills and secrets of
the games. His wit was legendary, and the one-liners
were pure gold. René was a master at Jeopardy and
Trivial Pursuit. He used to joke that he was a “fountain
of useless information.” René had an insatiable thirst
for facts and current events. He was comfortable with
himself, by himself, never lonely. He was kind and
honest and a man of great integrity. His goal in life
was to retire early and he took to it well. Life was full.
Hockey games in between countless rounds of golf,
hiking, kayaking, playing pool, and cruising the open
road with Cindy, on their motorbikes. When he would
reflect on his past, he would humbly comment that
he “had done quite well for an incompetent man.” He
thanked God every day for the blessings in his life.
René is survived by Cindy, his wife of thirty-four
years; daughters, Laura Britt (Anthony) Giuffre, Karly
Drew (Rob) Smith; son, Samuel McLean Frederick;
four beautiful grand-daughters, Olivia, Mary, Pia,
and Gianna, who called him Bumpa; while another
foursome of grandchildren, Audrey, Beau, Atticus,
and Lexon called him Papa. René also leaves his
beloved mom, Pat Frederick; sister, Debra (Randy)
Firth; brothers, Daniel (Arlene) Frederick, Paul (Dell)
Frederick; brother-in-law, Terry Deeg, along with their
families.
René was predeceased by his father, Bill; sister, Su-
zanne, and precious son, Ethan Kjeld. He found peace
knowing that even as he left our world, they were all
waiting to welcome him into God’s home.
His loss will also be felt deeply by his Pedersen fam-
ily. To all the friends along the way, you brought him
joy. Thank you.
