Maximo Viola
A rich Filipino who finished his medical education in Barcelona, Spain where
he met Rizal.
He went to Berlin for a short vacation.
Upon learning Rizal’s problem in proposed printing of his novel, he offered
₱300 as a loam to defray the cost of printing 2000 copies of Rizal’s novel.
Rizal went to a small printing shop, the Berliner Duchdruckerez-Action-
Geselschj aft Setrinnen-Schule des Lette-Vereins and began the printing.
February 1887, the first copies of the book were finished.
Rizal gave a copy to Maximo Viola, his friends in Madrid, Paris, London,
Hongkong and Manila including Ferdinand Blumentritt.
Tour in Berlin
Rizal guided Viola on their tour in Berlin.
They visited, observed and took notice of Berlin’s historical places,
institutions and monuments like Victory Column the Royal Palace,
university, cathedrals and churches and arts and science institution.
Rizal attended lectures in the University of Berlin and assisted in the clinics
of Dr. Schuler and Dr. Karl Schweigger.
They met Feodor Jagor, the author of a book of travel (Travels in the
Philippines) whom he was introduced through a letter by Blumentritt.
They also met Dr. Rudolph Virchow, an eminent and elderly German
Scientist and Ethnologist.
When Rizal received the ₱1000 from his brother, he immediately paid Viola
and the remaining ₱700 had been used by Rizal to travel in Central Europe
with Viola.
Leitmeritz
Rizal and Viola arrived at the railroad station of Lietmeritz, Bohemia ehre in
Ferdinand Blumentritt was waiting.
Blumentritt helped them to get a room at the Hotel Krebs.
They were warmly welcomed by Bohemian hospitality and were invited for
dinner.
Blumentritt introduced some prominent people Dr. Klutschak, an eminent
naturalist and Dr. Czepelak, a Europe Scientist.
They were invited as guests at a meeting of the city’s Mountain Club where
Rizal, speaking in correct and fluent German, praised the people of the city
for their hospitality and their fine traits including their love of nature.
Prague
Leaving Leitmeritz, they went to Prague, now Czechoslovakia, by train.
Rizal and Viola met Dr. Velcom, a natural history professor at the University
of Prague.
They visited the Tomb of Copernicus, the Famous Astronomer, Museum of
Natural History, Bacteriological Laboratories, the famous cave where San
Juan Nepomuceno was imprisoned.
Munchen (Munich)
They stayed from May 26-May 30, 2887 in Munchen and registered at Hotel
Rheinischer Hof.
They visited tbig beer factories and Rizal remarked that Munchen Beer was
the one of the best beer he ever tasted.
Switzerland
Rizal and Viola crossed the German boarder by train from Rheinfall to
Switzerland and checked in for a day at Hotel Muller.
They continued their tour to Dasel where they lodged at Schweizerhof Hotel.
After Basel, they went to the capital of Switzerland, the Berne.
By riding a train, they proceeded to Lausanne, the beautiful city on the side
of a volcanic lake, Lake Leman.
Geneva
By riding a boat from Lausanne they reached Geneva.
They were fascinated by this beautiful city and stayed for 18 days at Hotel
Pension Bel-Air at Rue de Rhone.
They visited the important tourist spots in they city and they took boat rides
on the lakes.
On June 23, 1887, they left Geneva on the same train, but at the Swiss
Boarder they separated, Rizal proceeded to Italy and Viola returned to
Barcelona and advised Rizal not to return to the Philippines.
Italy
In Italy, Rizal visited Rome (Vatican City), Turin, Milan, Venice and
Florence.
