112.11. Science, Kindergarten, Adopted 2017: Observe and describe weather changes from day to day
and over the seasons.
- In Kindergarten, students observe and describe the natural world using their senses. Students do
science as inquiry in order to develop and enrich their abilities to understand scientific concepts
and processes. Students develop vocabulary through their experiences investigating properties of
common objects, earth materials, and organisms. Weather is recorded and discussed on a daily
basis so students may begin to recognize patterns in the weather. Other patterns are observed in
the appearance of objects in the sky.

Materials Needed:

Paper
- Ask students to talk about what winter weather is like. How does it feel when they go outside?
What does the sky look like? Make a list on the whiteboard or chart paper of students' responses.
- Ask students which words have to do with winter.
- One at a time, have students circle a winter words in the list. Ask each student to explain their
reason for choosing the winter word.
- Have students share their experiences with winter weather. Ask them to talk about their favorite
things to do in winter weather or describe a time they were in a winter storm. Encourage students
to use the winter weather vocabulary when appropriate.
- Tell students to imagine that they have to describe a kind of weather to someone who has never
experienced it before, like a snowstorm to someone who lives someplace very warm.
- Encourage students to "paint a picture" with words so that someone reading their description
could picture the kind of weather they are describing. Also have students draw a picture of them
in the winter to give them a visual aide as well. If you wish, have students brainstorm a list of
phrase-starters such as the following:
-
- It looks like…
- It sounds like…
- It makes you think of…
- It makes you feel...
- Have student volunteers share their writing.
Summary:
Students will be engaged through visual stimulus containing the words and pictures. The students will
also be able to hear the words several times so the auditory learners are engaged and can learn about the
topic as well. The kinesthetic learners will also be able to learn through the hands on writing assignment
as well as remembering through the picture that they drew after their descriptive writing assignment.
After the students have had time to write and draw call on students to read what they wrote to make sure
that the students understand the topic and if need be explain the topic and address corrections.
